[UPDATE: Insidious Chapter Two has been pushed back a month. Read on...]
Our own Kofi Outlaw predicted that director James Wan’s new film The Conjuring could become the runaway horror success of 2013 (after fantastic test screening results and the film’s buzzed-about showing at this year’s New York Comic-Con). Wan’s positioned to repeat his act from 2011, where his supernatural horror flick Insidious hit it off with audiences for similar reasons; namely, it relies on good old-fashioned scare tactics and spookiness to send shivers down your spine.
However, it turns out The Conjuring won’t be the only dose of creepiness from Wan served up to moviegoers next summer – as the sequel, Insidious Chapter Two, is also going to be hitting theaters during that season (with Wan once again directing from a script penned by frequent collaborator Leigh Whannell).
Principal photography on the second Insidious installment is scheduled to begin on January 15th next year, in order to make an August 30th 2013 release date. There will also be returning players both behind-the-scenes and on-camera, as most cast members from the first film are confirmed for Chapter Two – including, Rose Byrne (X-Men: First Class), Patrick Wilson (Young Adult), Lin Shaye and Ty Simpkins. However, there’s no mention of Barbara Hershey (Black Swan) coming back, nor of Whannell and Angus Sampson reprising their amusing roles from the first film.
Meanwhile, Jason Blum and Oren Peli (Paranormal Activity) are once again coming back as co-producers, with Film District distributing the sequel in theaters around the U.S. Curiously, Insidious Chapter 2 arrives just over a month after The Conjuring reaches theaters. Then again, the summer isn’t traditionally a time when there’s an over-abundance of creepy flicks playing around the country, so both of Wan’s films could find success as counter-programming to the many blockbusters of the season.

Now, as anyone who’s seen Insidious knows all too well, that film ended on a freaky last-minute twist/cliff hanger that begs the question of what happens next; thus, the conflict for Chapter 2 has already been well-established (ie. Wilson’s body has been taken over by the creepy old lady demon that’s been haunting him since childhood). Moreover, the film concluded with Shaye’s character being strangled to death by the possessed Wilson – though, of course, in a world where supernatural forces are able to cross-over into our reality, there’s nothing to prevent her specter from making an appearance in the sequel.

Wan has continued to sharpen and refine his ability to scare the heck out of people since his breakout days making the first Saw movie – as evidenced by his work on Insidious (and early footage shown from The Conjuring). That provides all the more reason to see what tricks he has up his sleeve with Insidious Chapter 2.
Moreover, there are very much some interesting themes to be picked up in the sequel, in addition to the aforementioned dangling story threads – which makes this the rare occasion where a sequel to a horror movie is not only welcome, but can also readily expand on the mythology of the first installment (hopefully, without over-convoluting things in the process, a la Paranormal Activity 2-4).

Great news! I cannot wait.
If this was 10 years ago, I’d be saying “I’ll sleep over in front of the theatre to get 1st tickets”… Instead, I’ll just buy VIP seats online and watch it in Comfort and Joy.
LOVED Insidious.
I loved the first one. I will be watching this one for sure. Seems like it’s gonna be really good.
I dont know what it was about this movie but its the only movie that made me lose sleep
awesome! loved the 1st one, now all we need is “Sinister: Chapter Two”, that movie could use a sequel, plus I thought Sinister was scarier than Insidious and was an all around better horror movie
Totally awesome, cannot wait.
I cannot believe how people say this movie was good? It was complete crap, by far the worst horror movie ever made.
Well, that argument was so well put together, I’m going to change my opinion. No, wait. I was just being sarcastic. **eye roll**
Says you
Ok then why did you look it up to see when the second one was going to be released.,?! Because it seems to me like u liked the first one, so u could watch another one!
Insidious surprised me a lot, I really enjoyed it, it had has some real creepy moments in it, something most horror films made today cannot do, chapter 2 should be interesting..
eh… Im one of the few that didnt like the first one.
There were some ideas that I liked… for example the dancing grey child. If you watch that scene you see the mother walk threw the laundry room and into the kitchen and at first glance you see a coat hanging on the wall but if you pause the movie or have a good eye you will learn that is no coat hanger… ITS THE GREY CHILD!
I liked that. But what ruined the movie for me was the terrible dialogue and the third act. Act 3 was a cluster…mess… yea… mess. Just senseless direction all over the place and then the last few minutes just put the final nail in the coffin for me. Why did they do a SAW type ending with every thing that you see in the last 3 minutes of the film? It was really corny.
I agree. I never the big deal about this one really. I didn’t hate it, but didn’t think it was great either. The first half of the movie really had me intrigued and showed promise. But, as you mentioned, it started falling apart in the second half and I felt the third act was definitely mishandled.
This is not a sequel worthy movie, especially with the same cast. Don’t get me wrong the first movie was good, even tho the ending was a bit too out there, but a sequel will just take away from the first imo.
This might detract from the “f*** you” ending but I’m in favor of it. I wouldn’t be surprised if Shaye’s character didn’t return as she’s probably racked up enough karma from ghost-bothering to not have to fight evil anymore. It all comes down to the setting. Good: another haunted house movie. Bad: a parapsychological profiler sits across from Wilson’s character with slime-treated glass behind them to find out how to stop a rampaging spectre before he haunts again.
That image at the top of the page of the creepy old lady scared the ever lovin crap out of me when I first watched insidious and it still does…
I was really surprised bye how much I enjoyed the movie so I’ll definately check out part 2…
There were some great scare/creepy tactics in the first one (i.e., the dancing boy at the phonograph) that got me going, however in agreement with some of the other comments above, it started falling apart for me towards the end. I don’t think I’ll be totally rushing out to see I2, but I am a lil’ curious to how the story will unfold.
I liked the first movie, it really surprised me and was much better than what I expected with all the really crappy horror movies over the last few years it did actually feel fresh. I especially like the weird music they used.
Recently saw Sinister and what a total waste of time that was.
The first half of the film was great, but the exact moment when things started to go downhill was when the two assistants showed up. At that point, the entire tone of the movie seemed to change. Don’t get me wrong, there were a few moments afterwards that were decent, but overall I found the second half to be rather goofy. Part of my disappointment also comes from the fact that everyone I talked to said that the movie was terrifying.
I’m optimistic about the sequel, as I was intrigued by the astral projection and demons/ghosts and would like to see what they do with that.
Wow that is truly best news ever and their are finally making insidious 2 and their will ave astral projection and demon/ghosts and other dimension as well in insidious 1 and also insidious 2 and i will buy the first movies on dvd .
When will insidious 2 come out
When will insidious 2 come out we all want to know
When will the sequel to insidious come out or as u would call it insidious 2
WHEN WILL THE SEQUAL TO INSIDIOUS COME OUT MANY PEOPLE WANT TO KNOW
It says August, and Conjuring is July…
Love the first one original:)
I’m 12 and me and my friends LOVE it my little sister is 4 and she’s acually asking my mom when she is going to leave so she can watch it! I would … BEST… MOVIE…EVER!!!!!!:D
The first one was pretty darn good. It had all the elements of oldschool horror movies and the music was top notch for the genre. In fact, i think the music made the movie. 12 tonal Arnold Schoenberg status for the win!!!
Many of you feel the last half was bad but I feel it was actually quite a nice turn. Sure it lost it’s creepy factor but at least it introduced something refreshing. I enjoyed the whole movie to be honest, especially when he revisits the old house in astral form… That really made me happy like that creepy family…
of course I will watch it when it’s premiered. Never had a great horror movie since saw. Sinister looks good but I have yet to watch it.
I didnt like Sinister so much. That one could have been a lot better.
I’m sooooo gonna watch it! I was totally left hanging by the first part’s ending. I have watched the movie a thousand times, and yet, it still could send shivers down my spine, especially the scene where Rose Byrne checks the camera. It was totally creepy! So excited for Chapter 2!
The first movie hanging but it was so good I can’t wait
I absolutely loved part 1. Its was actually a scary movie lol. Most of these “scary” movies today arent scary @ all. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Can’t wait for part 2!!!
Tom Cruise is in insidious 2!
My gf and I found INSIDIOUS to be the best new age horror film. I don’t understand why anyone wouldn’t like it. Its old school horror made in our new school age. Its hard to produce anything original and bone chilling and this guy has done it with Insidious 1-2, and Conjuring.
I’m excited about this Conjuring. Any movie forced to have an R rating gets a must see in our book. I know if the movies good by wether or not my gf needs all the lights on when i’m not in the room before bed and Insidious was the only one in our 4 years together.
Keep it up James Wan. You obviously know horror.
