As some of our regular readers may know by now, we at Screen Rant like to hear about small studio indie films that may find a way to bring some original stories to the table and become widely successful. The recently successful Paranormal Activity is the biggest thing in the indie world since sliced bread. Last week, we introduced you to a new indie web series Broken Toy and of course we have been following the movies Black Death, Solomon Kane and The Tournament, in hopes of seeing them snag a big-screen wide release.

Today we bring you two trailers for a new film by indie studio Double Edge Films, which hopes to continue the indie breakout trend with their movie INK. Written and directed by Jamin Winans (which might make my top 10 coolest names – Kofi Outlaw is on that list as well), INK is the story of a little girl caught in a “metaphysical war being fought between the forces of light and darkness.” She gets kidnapped by a mysterious creature called Ink and is “taken  through a labyrinthine world of dream states while those who love her fight to bring her back into the real world and bring salvation to her desperate father.”

It’s an interesting story, and while usually I don’t enjoy dream state movies (because they tend to be over-stylized in order to make sure the audience understands the characters are in a dream), INK intrigued me because of the attention it is gathering. IMDB shows the movie’s popularity up 81,000%! Surely, all those people can’t be wrong?

The adorable Quinn Hunchar plays the 8-year-old Emma Sullivan while Chris Kelly plays her broken and grieving father, John Sullivan. The “rescue team” known as Storytellers, the group of people whose task it is to bring Emma back from the clutches of Ink, are made up of Liev (Jessica Duffy), Jacob (Jeremy Make), Allel (Jennifer Batter), Gabe (Eme Ikwuakor) and are led from dream world to dream world by Sara (Shelby Malone).

Kiowa K. Winans (seriously does everybody involved with this production have a cool name?)  joined up with Jamin in 2005 and has been working on INK for the past two years. The amount of work all parties involved have put into this project shows in all the great details and I’m glad to see their hard work paying off. Hopefully, they will continue to make great films and eventually a major studio will get their head out of their nether regions and start realizing that audiences like to see films like this.

Is INK something you would like to see in theaters? Well some of you may be in luck because there will be screening showing at the following locations and times:

What do you think of Double Edge Films latest offering INK and is it something you would have like to see on the big screen?

INK comes out on Blu-ray and DVD today, November 10th, 2009.

  1. holy crap i want to see this.

    the premise looks crazy

  2. I found it online not long ago (TPB posting it is mostly responsible for its huge shift in popularity, by the way). I watched it and enjoyed it quite a lot. It has its problems (excessive use of blown-out lighting) but its also a weird and trippy fantasy tale that’s worth checking out. These actors do an admirable job avoiding the usual tendency for no-names to either ham it up or be completely useless, although there aren’t any Oscar-calibre performances either. You can also order signed copies of the DVD and/or Blu-ray at the film’s website for very reasonable prices.

I say give it a chance, it’s well worth watching just to decide if you love or hate it, and I find it hard to believe anyone’s going to be well and truly bored by it even if they do end up hating it.

  3. Great … they found me.

  4. Dude, Am I the only one who thinks this film is a re-imagining of “Twice Upon A Time?”

  5. @Kofi Outlaw:

Having seen the film I will say that the similarities end at the “some give dreams, some give nightmares” two groups. There’s an entirely different journey going on in this film from the plot summary you linked to.

  6. I didn’t like it at all. Too artsy for the sake of art, and has some of the worst acting i ever, ever saw. Oh, yes, and the characters are ridiculous.

  7. I loved Ink. Artistically, creatively, and for the most part, the execution of the film.

It has even managed to skew my perception of indie films and give me (as a filmmaker) hope as I go forward with my own career.

  8. I want to see this Now. It looks absolutely amazing.

  9. I recently saw this movie and I “sort of” liked it, not too good, not too bad, but more good than bad. Curious about its background I did a little web research including this site and the impression I’m getting from public comments is people either REALLY REALLY LIKE it or REALLY REALLY HATE it. There appears to be no in between which seems a little odd. The haters reference movies I’ve never seen and the likers talk about the limited production resources. I just thought it was an entertaining hour and a half. Perhaps this is why it’s having a hard time getting picked up by a distributor. Could be they don’t want to take a chance on an investment that could cancel itself out in the world of critical opinion. Seems to me like this film is in a risky film genre but I give it my vote.

  10. another good vs evil movie… looks like pan’s labyrinth met up with day/night watch one night and they got it on ;-)

gonna watch this only because its seems like a psychological movie

  11. With a glut of Cineplex’s this should have played at one in at least every major city. How many movies playing this season are bona fide surreal?

  12. You can stream this on Netflix if anyone wants to see it

  13. I saw this trailer like 6 months ago. When is it coming out?

  14. It was very artistic and cool but the story kind of fell short. The acting was a bit painful at times and I never really got close to any characters. I wanted a little background on one or any of the Storytellers. It was cool and I’ll probably watch it again just to give it another try. Worth a watch for sure. I found it on the internet…sorry, I was too anxious to wait.

  15. Actors ruined the movie for me. The “warriors of light” look painfully stupid trying to look cool.

  16. Truly this seems to be the most creepy movie ever

  17. mmmmm k if it aint at blockbuster then Imma pass on it.

  18. Superb movie – would encourage everyone to go and see this

  19. I guess if i was 9 and never saw any other movie i would really enjoy this

  20. This movie was awesome. The “Screen Rant” community will definitely love this one.

  21. Wow! This movie looks great! I can’t wait to see it. I loved the all the different effects with the sound, like the echo of the woman’s voice at the beginning. Very cool!

  22. I have not stopped thinking about this movie since I saw it 20 hours ago. As a father of 3 young boys and being a succsesful car salesman with a stay home wife this movie hit home. Although I am nowhere near the guilt ridden father in this film a small part of me could relate with him. I cried like a little girl at the end. What a great concept for a movie,I thourghly enjoyed it and have told many people to see it.
