Injustice 2 is Warner Bros. Games and NetherRealm Studios' fighting game based on the DC Comics Universe of characters. The first installment - Injustice: Gods Among Us - found much more success than gamers originally expected for what is essentially a reskin of Mortal Kombat. The franchise also spun off a success comic book series telling the story of what led up to the events of the first video game.

Warner Bros. Games has released a bunch of trailers and information on Injustice 2, including introduces fans to new characters that are going to be heavily involved in the plot of the game. Supergirl, for example, has been highly featured doing battle with Wonder Woman and showing off her unique abilities.

Today, Warner Bros. released a new Injustice 2 trailer today that introduces Doctor Fate as a playable character. In this footage he can be seen doing battle with Supergirl, Cyborg and Atrocitus and he can more than hold his own against them. With his magical abilities, Doctor Fate more than holds his own and this trailer shows off a pretty incredible finishing move that involves sending an opponent to the Tower of Fate where multiple versions of Doctor Fate are ready to cause the offending party as much pain as possible. Not only will DC Comics fans recognize the aforementioned Tower of Fate, but the Ace O' Clubs bar also appears. Ace O' Clubs is a Metropolis staple usually located on the dock, owned and operated by Bibbo Bibbowski.

Including iconic locations that have come to define the DC Universe is a really wonderful way for Injustice 2 to build out their world and the singular mythology that they are building in order to separate themselves from both the DCEU and the classic comic book continuity. To top it off, Doctor Fate looks like a power house addition to the game. Classically, his magical powers have proved problematic for both Superman and a variety of Green Lanterns in the past and it will be interesting to see just how impressive he turns out to be in the final gameplay.

On the other hand, there isn't a lot in the trailer that furthers the plot of the game. Now, a combat game isn't going to be as story heavy as RPG games or something like a Telltale game, but the differences between the in-universe world and what fans are used to seeing is what has led to the popularity of the original game. There are certainly no room for spoilers in the space of this trailer, but fans will have to wait for the release of the game to see how Doctor Fate is going to shape up next to some other formidable and plot-integral characters like Supergirl.

Injustice 2 releases on May 16th, 2017.
