NetherRealm Studios' Ed Boon reveals the exact date Mortal Kombat regular Sub-Zero will be available in Injustice 2. When the DC fighting game Injustice 2 was released across platforms in May, despite a pretty full roster of existing DC heroes, hype was already building for those extra characters you would be able to download at a later date. This was teased just prior to its release with trailers depicting characters in the so-called Fighter Pack 1. The three new fighters consisted of Starfire, Red Hood, and Sub-Zero, and whilst Koriand'r and Jason Todd are well-known DC characters and natural fits to the arena, the ice-cold ninja is the "novelty" ingredient and one of the most recognizable Mortal Kombat fighters. His availability on DLC was known to be sometime in July, but the exact date has now been confirmed.

Although most game fans would pick skull-faced Scorpion as the "face" of Mortal Kombat, the only fighter to have appeared in all the "pure" franchise games is actually Sub-Zero. Scorpion played hooky for Mortal Kombat 3, although you can argue that Sub-Zero has actually been played by two different in-game characters (brothers Bi-Han and Kuai Liang). In any case, while Scorpion battled the Superheroes in Injustice, it seems only fitting that the chilled ninja should be one of the first choices for DLC in the sequel. While it's not the first time he has faced down the likes of Flash and Aquaman, which he did in Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe in 2008, the improved physics and graphics of the current gen makes it a more enticing prospect. A trailer earlier this month showed Sub-Zero facing off against Superman, as well as Batman and Wonder Woman, with many of his regular moves well in evidence.

When that trailer was released, the generic announcement "coming in July" was all that pointed to his DLC date. But now the exact day has been revealed by Ed Boon on his Twitter account. The statement; "Winter is coming ... in July" is made again, with the appointed deadline given as Tuesday 11th July.

Boon is of course the co-creator of Mortal Kombat and the Creative Director of NetherRealm Studios which produces both franchises, and has a long history of filling his games with Easter Eggs and teases. The latest rumor is that thunder-god Raiden may possibly be another future Mortal Kombat DLC character, as a silhouette of him can be supposedly seen in some artwork and trailers.

Those who have special editions (and access to the season pass) of the game will be able to download the fighter on the stated day, and he should be made available as a separate purchase in due course. While some gamers still aren't sure about mixing the OTT comic-book moves of DC with the more bloody and vicious movements of Mortal Kombat, the advanced footage suggests that the ice-clones and frozen-floor moves should at least add some tactical elements to the gameplay.

As with previous games, NetherRealm look certain to keep interest high in their latest brawler, and we can expect further (and possibly quirkier) additions to the roster to continue to arrive, well after Starfire and Red Hood have joined the throng. We'll keep you updated with any further news of newcomers to the team of Injustice 2.
