Fans have eagerly awaited a sequel to NetherRealm Studios’ Injustice: Gods Among Us, and the reaction to the Injustice 2 reveal has been pretty positive so far. While only a limited roster has been revealed at this point, a few notable additions to the game include Supergirl, Gorilla Grodd, and Atrocitus of the Red Lanterns. More additions are rumored as well, though they haven’t been officially confirmed as yet.

Now that E3 has arrived, more information about Injustice 2 is coming out. In addition to gameplay and super move videos, director Ed Boon also went on the record regarding the game’s roster and how the company sought to add in more of what fans loved about the original game.

Speaking to DC All Access, Boon discussed the new heroes and villains that were shown off in the Injustice 2 gameplay trailer. Explaining that some of them were characters who had to be left out of the first game, he expressed his excitement at them making the cut this time around:

“The recent gameplay trailer that we released showed gameplay for uh, Atrocitus, Gorilla Grodd, and Supergirl, as well as three other returning characters: Superman, Batman, and Aquaman. So it’s so exciting because you know some of the characters that we couldn’t get to in the first Injustice game that we were dying to put into the game, we were finally able to do it. And so that’s a huge thing, so we can’t wait for people to play such a diverse set of characters.”

Boon also discussed the powered armor that the characters are seen equipping in the trailer, and explained that it’s more that just a cosmetic change for the characters. The armor is earned during the game, and can be equipped by players to customize the characters and adjust their abilities on a fight-to-fight basis. According to Boon:

“Yeah well this game is all about player customization, and so we’re going to learn a lot of details at E3, but it is about custom pieces that actually help your character and so the variety of ways that they do them is really cool. You know, so like you see Batman in our graphics with the kryptonite gauntlets. How else is he going to fight against Superman? So yeah there’s a variety of things that they can kind of upgrade in the game that really makes this game like um, so much different than any other fighting game, and certainly a lot different than the first Injustice.”

This customization can be seen firsthand in a gameplay video that was released at E3. The footage shows several matches, the character and stage selection screen, a variety of character moves and of course the customization screen.

Several super moves are seen in the video, similar to the moves that were in the original Injustice. Boon also talked about this:

“The Aquaman one was one of the big ones from Injustice 1, and it had that big shark that came out and grabbed the opponent and this one blows that one away so that one, that one we’re really excited about. Batman’s is way bigger in scale you know Superman is always big in scale, even bigger in this one. In this one he kind of juggles the character by several miles of punching, so its really cool.”

IGN has released a video (above) compiling the super moves into a single short video without having to wait through all of the fights for those wanting to see them by themselves.

Given how many blacked-out roster options are present on the character select screen, it looks like Injustice 2 is going to be huge. Based on what we’ve seen so far, fights are going to be big and full of action, with even more over-the-top super moves than what we saw in the original Injustice. Fans of the original are likely thinking that 2017 won’t get here fast enough.

Injustice 2 is slated for release on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC sometime in 2017.
