DC’s Black Lightning is joining the Injustice 2 fighting game this October, as part of the Fighter Pack 2 expansion. This addition comes at an exciting time for Black Lightning, who will be the title character of a new live-action TV show very soon. The CW’s Black Lightning series will arrive this winter, to bridge the midseason gaps of Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow.

Cress Williams will play Jefferson Pierce, aka Black Lightning, in the TV show. It has been revealed that this show will not be an origin story, with the decision being made to start the story in Jefferson’s superhero retirement instead. The arrival of the crime lord Tobias Whale (played by Marvin Jones III) in town is bound to lure Jefferson back into action. Co-showrunner Salim Akil has described the series as “uniqueamong superhero shows, given its focus on an older protagonist and the Chicago area.

Now, as hype continues to build for the Black Lightning TV show, its central hero has been added to Injustice 2. He will be a ‘premier skin’ - with his own design and voice - that players can place over Raiden, the God of Thunder from the Mortal Kombat franchise. This clip (see the video above) highlights both characters’ entrance stances, some of their fight moves, and a few lines of their dialogue.

“You’re getting struck by Black Lightning" Jefferson goads, after making a dramatic entrance involving a lightning bolt. This begins a montage of gameplay footage, showcasing some of Jefferson’s powerful electrical moves. Between Black Lightning and Raiden, this clip certainly includes a lot of shock-based attacks. This expansion should add some interesting new elements to the game, then, thanks to these powerful new fighters.

However, there is something lacking in this video. Exciting as these new additions are, the clip holds back from showing Black Lightning’s special move. Raiden’s special move is displayed in all its Mortal Kombat-referencing glory, but fans will have to wait until next month to see what Black Lightning’s show-stopping finisher entails. It would be odd to see Black Lightning harnessing the power of the Mortal Kombat dragon, so one would hope that his special move is different to Raiden's.

Black Lightning isn’t the only character from The CW to be found in Injustice 2. Green Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Black Canary, Firestorm, Gorilla Grodd, Superman, Deadshot and Captain Cold also feature, with some of them leaning very close to their TV iterations on The CW.
