It’s not even been two months since Screen Rant reported on the first trailer for Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming war flick Inglourious Basterds, and yet it’s steam-rolling ahead towards the Cannes Film Festival next month.

Along with the trailer, we’ve already had some images released for the film as well as three wicked posters. To go along with this glorious (see what I did there?) news that it’ll not only be simply playing at Cannes, but it will be in competition (which means it’s eligible for the prestigious Palme d’Or award). We have a few new images for it (one of which is the header image above).

They’re damn cool, check them out:

This is an unusual project for Tarantino in the way and speed it has been made – usually he takes years between projects, working on the script meticulously until he deems it “right.” For instance, I read in a biography book a few months ago that when writing Pulp Fiction back in the early ’90s, Tarantino disappeared to France and was out of contact for weeks and weeks even as his deadline drew near.

I guess he believes in the saying “quality over quantity.”

However as I said, Inglourious Basterds is a different story – although he had this project in the pipeline for years and years (pretty much only in the idea stage, to the annoyance of excited fans such as myself), once he started shooting last October, he’s dove in head first and swam at high speed. Fast forward less than half a year later and he’s almost done judging by the commitment he’s made for the film to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this May.

I am a mega Tarantino fan and have been ever since I had the pleasure of sitting down with his first two movies Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction (which is my all-time favorite movie, by the way). He was really the filmmaker that made me go from casual movie goer to full blown film enthusiast, and because of that he will always be given the benefit of the doubt by me.

Inglourious Basterds isn’t, however, just one of those movies that I think looks amazing simply because of the man who’s behind it. From the images, posters, and trailer that have been released, this thing really does look pretty damn brilliant. I love the idea of Tarantino doing a war flick. As he has made public throughout his career, he is a huge film buff himself – holding movies like The Dirty Dozen (which is clearly an influence on Basterds) close to his heart.

He’s also brought together one hell of a diverse and strange cast which includes Brad Pitt, Diane Kruger, Mike Myers (I know, I couldn’t believe it either!), Michael Fassbender, Eli Roth, Julie Dreyfuss, Samm Levine, Maggie Cheung, Cloris Leachman, and even reunited with his old Pulp Fiction buddy Samuel L. Jackson (who will narrate the film).

It’s not beyond the realm of possibility that some of those actors’ profiles could become a lot bigger, perhaps even household, names because of this movie. Just look at John Travolta and Sam Jackson after Pulp Fiction – where would they, particularly Jackson, be without Tarantino and that movie?

Tarantino is a long time friend of the Cannes Film Festival – he had Death Proof in the running for the Palme d’Or last year, and even was President of the Jury back in 2004 (where he pushed hard for the Korean movie Oldboy to get the Palme d’Or, which ended up winning the Grand Prix instead). I just hope that he’s not rushing production just for the sake of getting it done in time for the festival - if it needs the time to simmer then give it that time.

Are you looking forward to Inglourious Basterds? What are your thoughts on these latest images, and the fact it’s set for Cannes?

Inglourious Basterds is scheduled to premiere at Cannes in May, and is to be released on August 21st this year.
