Indy 4: Speilberg defers to Lucas’ judgement
Feb 11, 2005 by Vic HoltremanPop quiz everyone:
Who do you think is a better judge of whether a screenplay is good:
A. George Lucas
B. Steven Speilberg
Speilberg wants to move forward on Indy 4… he was actually ready to make it a year and a half ago based on Frank Darabont’s screenplay. But his pal Lucas, who has brought us the riveting Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones nixed the script.
Hey George, how about you stick to the special effects side of things and leave story and direction to Steven? You know, the guy who makes Oscar-nominated and Oscar-winning films?

Yeah, no kidding. Lucas is good with general stories, but his scripts leave much to be desired. The problem is, he’s so wealthy and powerful that no one has the guts to be honest with him about any mediocrity that shows up in his work. (And even then, there’s the question of whether he would listen.)
IMHO, after 16 years, the Indiana Jones franchise needs to be taken in a different direction, and Darabont’s writing style certainly had the potential to do that.

I wonder if they’ll get Tom Cruise to play the part of Indy?
It does seem like Spielberg and Cruise have a pretty tight business arrangement, doesn’t it?
