It DOES look very "X-Filesy" to me and I think fans will get all X-cited when they hear the theme music in the trailer. It looks like it'll be good for those folks and I thought it wasn't too bad (except for that cliched music towards the very end.)

When it comes to science fiction, we enjoy the idea of what could be, and what might be vs. the hard core reality of the underlying science to our favorite shows and movies.

Some older movies hit on a subject matter that is touched upon in many a retelling, paying true homage to the genius that invented them. Some newer tales hit us with such obscure new angles on a story that the retelling of it would be a mere rip-off.

I've had interesting arguments with the scientist's I work with about the science in our beloved Sci-Fi shows. I don't think they've caught on , but I like tormenting them.. They do set themselves up for it.

It's funny when they repeatedly badger my favorite shows for scientific flaws like there's no sound in space? Duh.

I then point out that while "scientists" were trying to prove the earth was not flat, science fiction writers where putting men on the moon, even though it was an impossibility when they wrote those stories.

My favorite part of the debate is when I get into the definition of Science Fiction. (Sci: The state of knowing and Fi: Something invented by the imagination.) But when you query Merriam Webster for the term Science Fiction, it does not produce a definition. But Wikipedia says Science fiction is a broad genre of fiction that often involves speculations based on current or future science or technology.

Maybe I've sparked something in the science community (or not) but over on NewScientist, amongst the articles about 'Rats that Feel Peer Pressure Too' and 'Why didn't Earth freeze under faint young Sun?' is an article on what 5 movies the science community thinks got the science right in the science fiction genre. Five? That's it, just five?

They first note how Iron Man includes many real world technologies, (Or they're fishing for internet hits) but then they go on to point out their obvious focus: "all too often Hollywood's use of science involves shocking blunders: including spaceships making whooshing noises in Star Wars to the journey to the centre of the Earth in The Core."

The movies they reference range from 1968 to 2004 and they warn us that their reviews may contain potential spoilers .... [crickets in the background] Gee, thanks for the warning before I watch my BetaMax version of the movie I taped off off the airwaves. (You see why I like tormenting scientists.. they are so fun sometimes.)

The five movies they say got it right are:
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
Alien (1979)
Gattaca (1997)
Solaris (1972 and 2002)

With 2001: A Space Odyssey, they say that Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C Clarke's work is a realistic depiction of space travel when all the scenes outside the ship are in silence and the crew eats paste rather than solids and they loved how the crew members are shown dealing with the boredom of space travel.

They liked Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind because the selective memory erasure methodology depicted in the movie may not be impossible, quoting how different forms of dementia affect particular types of memory and so they approve of the premise.

They liked the use of suspended animation for long space trips in Alien because of the implausibility of faster-than-light travel. They also enjoyed the finer details of the aliens' life cycle. But of course they still diss on the super fast life cycle of the adult and it's acid blood.

Their appreciation of Gattaca stems from the grim vision of a society dominated by genetic prejudice and they still rag on the "job interview" at Gattaca Aerospace Corporation that consisted of DNA sampling of a urine sample because as they put it, our genetics can only give statistical predictions, not absolutes.

They liked Solaris because of how it portrays the limits of science and human understanding. They seem to appreciate Stanislaw Lem's take on the fact that humans would not be able to understand the potential strangeness of extraterrestrial life.

I'm guessing the science community missed Barbarella. Again, we apologize for the spoilers .. Oi.

Welcome to another news filled Weekend Wrap Up. The summer is well and truly here, the sun is shining and the weather is hot and Indiana Jones is only eleven days way!

This week's Wrap up includes news on:

Tom Cruise, Common signing up for McG's Terminator film, Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster in Pandorum, Kevin Costner decides not to take The Holy Road but he is prepared for a Swing Vote, Death Race and The X-Files: I Want to Believe.

1. It seems that every week I write about Tom Cruise in this update, and to make sure that I don't break my routine here's some more Cruise related news: Warner Bros want him to star in The 28th Amendment alongside Denzel Washington. The political thriller is set to be directed by Phillip Noyce, the director of Clear and Present Danger and Patriot Games.

Looks like the brothers Warner have a spare $50 million hanging around to secure these guys for the film. I wonder if Speed Racer's box office crash will make them change their minds?

Source: Entertainment Weekly

2. Rapper Common has signed up for McG's new Terminator film. It is rumored that he will be playing Daniel Dyson, son of Myles Dyson, the character played by Joe Morton in Terminator 2.

Does anyone else think that this film is beginning to sound a bit stupid? Yeah... me too!

Source: Joblo

3. Dennis Quaid is a very busy man. Hear that Meg Ryan? He's employable!
Quaid and Ben Foster in final negotiations to star in the sci-fi action film Pandorum.

According to The Hollywood Reporter:

"'Pandorum' centers on mysterious events aboard an abandoned space craft, with Quaid and Foster as crewmen who must discover what's happened to them and to the planet they're orbiting."

Sounds pretty cool. German director Christian Alvart is directing the film.

4. Kevin Costner has turned down the film The Holy Road, a sequel to his epic Oscar winning western Dances With Wolves.

No word on why Costner has decided not to return to the character of John Dunbar, but I'd bet pretty good money that one of the reasons is that Simon Wincer is directing the film. If he had so much control over the original I can't see him starring in the film when he can't call the shots. Just ask Kevin Reynolds!

The producers have an alternate choice - Viggo Mortensen.

Please, please don't do this! Dances With Wolves is one of my favorite films, and I'd hate to see it ruined, and making this film without Costner is only going to highlight it as a cheap imitation.

5. Keeping up with Costner his new film Swing Vote is released this summer - August 1st. In the film Costner stars as booze loving everyman who has the worlds press take an avid interest in him when the US presidential election comes down to his vote.

It looks like Costner is on Tin Cup form. Could be the sleeper hit of the summer.

Check out the newly released poster:

6. If you're looking forward to Death Race 3000 then you'll be pretty happy with this news: Universal Pictures has moved the release of the film from a late September slot to August 22. Paul W.S. Anderson's remake stars Jason Statham and Joan Allen.

7. The Polish poster for The X-Files: I Want to Believe has been released and it looks... strange. It kind of looks like a direct-to-DVD cover. Considering the low key marketing on this I was expecting something great.

It also looks like it's been made up of most of the stills that have been released so far.

What do you think?

Source: XFilesnews.com

That's all folks for another week, see you at the movies!

Review: Speed Racer (IMAX)

Screen Rant reviews the much maligned live action cartoon

Rating:

3 out of 5

Short version: Speed Racer is strictly for kids, big time nostalgia-feeling fans of the original series and perhaps video game addicts.

Considering all I'd heard about and seen via trailers and clips about Speed Racer, I was almost concerned about what it would be like to watch it on a gigantic IMAX screen. I thought perhaps it would give me a huge headache or perhaps induce some psychotic state in me, or worse - my daughter.

Ah, but 11 year olds brains are hardwired for this kind of stuff, so not to worry - she's fine. :-)

the film starts with a tribute to the opening of the original series which if you're a fan I think you'll find very cool. It then goes right into showing us a young Speed Racer (yes, for the uninitiated, that is his name) and in a funny opening sequence shows us that he was apparently born to be a race car driver, much to the detriment of his school work.

We meet his brother Rex, who picks him up from school in the iconic Mach 5 car and a few seconds later you get your first clue of the visual look of the movie. I expected as they pulled back to show them pulling away that other cars would look like regular old automobiles, but they all have a futuristic look to them - so much so that the Mach 5 looks like just another car.

Rex indulges Speed by taking him to the race track for a practice run, and we see the bond between them as Speed sits in Rex's lap, steering the car at what we would call wildly insane speeds. In one rather silly moment, Rex tells Speed to close his eyes so he can hear what the car is telling him - while rocketing down a curve-laden track at speeds over 100mph.

Soon thereafter Rex leaves home on bad terms with his father, "Pops" Racer who tells Rex if he leaves he can never come back. From there Rex seems to "go to the dark side" becoming one of the most notorious drivers on the race circuit., causing crashes and all sorts of mayhem. Eventually it seems that he himself is claimed as a casualty in a fatal car wreck of his own in an ice cave.

Cut to Speed as a young man (21?) and he's on the rise as one of the hottest race car drivers out there. The "Racer" family are independent racers, with no corporate sponsers (who Pops considers "the devil"). So I guess they only earn income from race winnings?

Anyway, they are approached by the owner of Royalton Industries, a snake-charmer of a guy who wants to bring the Racer family on board in order to "give them a better life." Of course there's a catch and it's eventually revealed to Speed who declines and is then a target on the track of every other driver in any race.

While I really think Speed Racer is a "love it or hate it" kind of movie, I managed to fall somewhere in the middle. Again, remember this is a review of the IMAX version of the film, so that influences my reaction to it. The visuals, on that enormous screen were for lack of a better word: crazy. It truly is an eyeball-shattering intense CGI-carnival assault on the senses. I'm actually not sure if watching this in IMAX may have been a bad idea - this movie may be similar to Cloverfield in that it may be better viewed on a TV screen.

It wasn't just the psychedelic visuals that bothered me - it was the placing of live action characters into that canvas. Except for the obviously monsterous budget of the movie, it struck me that if it had been only 10 minutes long it could have been considered some indie experimental film. I blame George Lucas for introducing the idea of sticking live actors into 99% CGI environments. I just don't like it. It seems weird and my mind battles to figure out whether it's looking at a CGI animated movie or a live action film.

Having said that, I actually think this would have worked much, much better if they had just gone all the way and made it a completely CGI animated film. Having the anchor of real actors in a sea of such extreme, colorful, physics-bending environments just doesn't work for me. I think they should have either toned down the look of the film for a live action version or just replaced the actors with stylized CGI characters.

What was good about it? The fact that the further you get into the film the better it seems to get. The races get better, the story improves and overall there's a good, positive message delivered to kids in the audience about family, standing up for what you believe in and courage in the face of adversity.

The final race in particular was pretty action packed, although to me it suffered some of the same issues as similar scenes in Transformers: too much going on, making it difficult to even focus on what you're looking at.

In particular I thought Emil Hirsche as Speed did an admirable job and I have to admit that I thoroughly enjoyed Lost's Matthew Fox as Racer X just because he seemed to be enjoying himself so much in the role.

One of the highlights was also young Paulie Litt as Spritle, who provided pretty much any of the laughs in the film.

On the other hand, it's bizarre seeing humans in a pretty much cartoon environment and if I'm going to nitpick, it seemed like the much used word "ass" in the film was stuck in there just to avoid a dreaded G rating.

On a final note, walking out to the parking lot I almost felt like I had stepped into a sensory deprivation tank after that all over-stimulation.

So there you have it. If you have kids but aren't a fan of the original, I suggest you drop them, off head to the theater next door... and watch Iron Man again. :-)

With all the re-imagining of older films, or series, it's inevitable that as some franchises get snapped up, other studios look to the franchises that haven't been snatched up yet and in this case, Buck Rogers is one of those franchises.

It's being reported that Nu Image/Millennium Films has obtained the film rights to Buck Rogers, and is looking to give the franchise a live action shot at some screen treatment.

Up until now, the premise of the story which was first brought to the public in 1928, where the main character falls into a coma and woke up in the 25th century. In NBC's version back in the early 80's, he was flying a space shuttle and gets frozen in space until he is discovered and awakened in the 25th century.

I know we're getting pummeled with space show remakes, and this one ranked right below Battlestar Galactica in my book. Galactica wasn't that high on my book back then, but that old piece of toast was buttered up pretty good and became pretty tasty over on The Sci-Fi Channel.

Maybe, if we're lucky, the same might happen for Buck Rogers?

Nu Image/Millennium's Avi Lerner got the rights from the Dille Trust. The rights had been with Disney, but I don't think they wanted their franchise cartoon-ized by Disney, and they wanted to have more control over any distillation of the film, hence Nu Image/Millennium's good fortune.

In case you're wondering about some reports out there, Variety (My source for this earth shattering report) Frank Miller is not on the project because according to sources at Millennium, they don't have a creative team lined up yet.

The franchise had attracted notable and non-notable names through out it's various incarnations, from Buster Crabbe to Gil Gerard and Millennium is shopping the project to find a studio partner.

If you're wondering where you might have heard of Nu Image/Millennium before, they obtained the rights to Conan, which is now being developed with Lionsgate.

Jericho's loss is Caprica's gain as I see it.

Fresh off of Jericho, an actor I really enjoyed on NYPD Blue, Esai Morales will be joining the cast of Caprica as Joseph Adama, the father of William Adama and I can't imagine a more suited actor to play the father to Edward James Olmos. If you've ever watched Deadwood, then you might be familiar with Paula Malcomson who's been cast as the female lead of Amanda, A surgeon who turns out to be a double agent in the film

In case you've lived in a cave and not accessed this or other sites chatting about the movie, Caprica is a prequel to Battlestar Galactica (BSG) and is set 50 years before the events that take place in BSG.

Mean while, back at the farm or more accurately, over on Smallville, it looks like Allison Mack who plays Chloe is in financial "debates" with the studio and may be leaving the show. Rosenbaum leaving helps her characters' status on the show and with Kristin Kreuk reprising her role of Lana only in a handful of episodes next year, this puts the Chloe character in the limelight and Mack gets herself some decent leverage.

At this rate, the few regulars left will be either gaining momentum in the contract department, or excess fodder to the studio, depending on the studio's perspective, and as you know, we can't tell what they will really do.

I'm feeling like I need to fill this post out a little bit more, so here's a non-TV thought for everyone:

Anyone remember Ghost Rider with Nicolas Cage? Was anyone fast enough to catch it in the theaters or on Pay-Per-View? Yeah, right. Have you wondered when the direct to VHS sequel is coming out? Last year Avi Arad said that there will be a sequel to Ghost Rider, but that tidbit of info has been countered now with Eva Mendes of all people saying it's been stalled or completely dumped.

It's crazy out there with cast additions and negotiations while we start hoping for sequels to some movies or in some cases, hoping a sequel never happens and all we can do is hope our dollars have spoken where they are spent!

Check Out The Full Clone Wars Trailer

The new trailer for Clone Wars features puppet versions of your favorite characters

Well since we do consider ourselves mainly a sci-fi, fantasy and superhero movie site, I guess we ought to post up the new full trailer for Star Wars: Clone Wars. If you haven't heard, this will be a new ongoing CGI animated TV series, but Lucasfilm decided to launch it as a feature length animated film in theaters this summer.

You can check out the trailer for yourself below...

src="http://screenrant.com/mediaplayer/mediaplayer.swf"

flashvars="height=242&width=570&file=http://screenrant.com/trailers2/clone-wars-trailer.flv&bufferlength=6"
/>

Oh, and since this page didn't take long enough to download already, here's the new poster as well:

I find it quite funny that one of the taglines in the trailer is "Star Wars like you've never seen it before."

Really? I've never seen huge CGI-generated vistas and thousands of CGI characters in gigantic battles before? Apparently they're assuming that no one has seen Star Wars 1, 2 or 3...

Clone Wars comes to a theater near you on August 15th.

New Knight Rider Series Won't Be Based On the Pilot

The recent Knight Rider TV movie was lame, but the series may be better

After the movie pilot for Knight Rider came and went, Vic gave it a "Not Awesome" rating, which actually meant it didn't completely suck. Some saw it as a great extension of the original show, while others thought it reminded them more of an older show that tried its hand at the super car genre, called Viper. (I really like Vipers, BTW)

I liked seeing the K.I.T.T. with new technology in a new car, even if we never heard what happened to the old one, but it just felt empty to me. Fun to watch, but I wasn't compelled by any character.

The pilot had sufficient ratings to be granted a shot at a series slot on NBC, and eerily, in an earlier post, Vic said "One can only hope they get some new writers once this thing goes weekly." It freaks me out and I put on my tin foil helmet to protect my mind from probing brain waves because it seems that NBC listened or Vic sensed something...

Why? Because NBC went out and hired Gary Scott Thompson as the Executive Producer and showrunner for Knight Rider. If you're wondering where you've heard that name before, he's the guy who brought us Vegas on NBC, and another car-centric movie: The Fast and the Furious. The first good thing about this is that Thompson is a self proclaimed motorhead.

Usually when someone comes on board a project, they pay some form of homage to the pilot or effort before it, but Thompson is taking a whole new route with his thoughts on the project.

He's approaching the series with 7 to 8 writers, some of whom he's worked with before. Their experience comes from shows like Crossing Jordan and Charmed. A few other writers from from shows like Lost, Prison Break, and a writer who contributed to the first two seasons of Smallville (you know, back when it wasn't quite the mess it is now).

With this variety of experience, I'm already thinking this might not be a loser, but I'd better not see a mystery smoke tendril or I swear I'll lose it.

The other aspect about the show being an improvement over the pilot was that, as Thompson put it, he had nothing to do with the 2-hour pilot and he seems proud of that. In fact when the studio asked him his opinion on the pilot, he questioned their sanity in asking if they really wanted to know that or not. Fair warning I guess. He basically said that the movie did not advance anything about the mythos of the show and the series would need to be reinvented.

What he did like was that the way the movie ended. It left the direction of the series a blank slate for him, so he'll move it forward by twisting some of the movie facts around a bit to push the series in his preferred direction. One of the things he's going to torment us with is what the car actually can and cannot do... by keeping some of its features quiet for as long as possible... the rat!!

To add to the car, he and his staff are visiting different tech companies and asking about their vision for things 10 to 20 years down the road. Even Microsoft is entertaining them. But mark my words, if K.I.T.T. ends up being run by MS Windows, the car is screwed. They'll keep finding themselves pulling over, turning the car off, and restarting it every week or two!

What Thompson recognizes is that very little that was new was brought forward about the car in the movie and he plans on expanding on that. He told the studio that he will take the show in the direction he feels necessary to maintain his credibility - and that sounds like a man on a mission. Not to mention a man who could be the guy who gives NBC a pseudo sci-fi action hit. A gray area indeed, but if NBC supports him and gives him a good time slot, this just might work.

He's writing the first episode and the story will be such that you won't have to have seen the made for TV movie to get on board the new series. He wants to catch the audience's attention, get old fans on board, and make new fans say 'holy crap'.

We can only hope, as they start shooting in June!

Knights Templar Vs... Vampires!

This is either going to be really cool - or really stupid

I think that it's well know around these parts that I'm a big Indiana Jones fan. What isn't so well known is that I have a strong affinity to Dr. Jones for a strange reason: My Dad, much like Henry Jones Sr. has a bizarre obsession with the Holy Grail.

It's been something that has been in my family for years, and I have to admit that I have even been to France on my own Grail quest... well kind of.

The Da Vinci Code was required reading for my family (even though the theories presented within it weren't new) and the film was a great disappointment to me and my entire family. So anything Knights Templar-related (National Treasure included) is a must-see for me and my family. So the Browne clan is now very excited about the forthcoming Universal Pictures film that will put a horror spin on this famed and legendary order.

Adam Torchia and Justin Stanley have just sold a script with the title The Knights Templar that has the follwoing plot:

"The Knights Templar, fresh from the Crusades, are forced to fend off an invading vampire army set on destroying the Holy Grail."

Now you're either going to think that this movie sounds like the greatest thing since sliced bread, or that it sounds like the second coming of Gigli - only with less Turkey references.

The Knights Templar will be produced by Marc Platt and Timur Bekmambetov, the gentleman behind the forthcoming Angelina Jolie starrer Wanted.

I feel that this is another one of those films that has an outstanding premise (kind of like Van Helsing) and I hope that it isn't ruined by a bad script, pandering to a teen audience or shoddy CGI.

At the very least the Browne's will be checking out The Knights Templar en-masse, so at the very least expect a $300 dollar gross for this film!

With a bit of luck The Knights Templar will be a nice balance of historical epic and horror film. Let's hope that Hollywood doesn't ruin it... like they usually do to great and original ideas!

No release date or cast has been announced yet, but I will keep you updated as the news comes in or out - you know what I mean!

Is Matthew Vaughn Off Thor?

Is Thor in limbo?

First, Marvel Films announced their entire slate of projects for the next three years. Among the films included Thor coming summer 2010 - June 4, 2010 to be specific.

And now comes word that director Matthew Vaughn (i.e. behind last year's Stardust and the original director for X-Men: The Last Stand) is off the film.

To be honest, I'm surprised this film is going to see the light of day to begin with.

Thor's basically known by the general public for having a big-ass hammer and appearing in Chris Columbus' 1987 comedy Adventures in Babysitting.

And if you remember, the first draft that Vaughn handed into the studio was said to have cost $300 million to produce(!)

The official reason behind this call is "his holding deal expired December."

This is interesting considering as recently as this past March Vaughn didn't indicate he was off the project other than to tell Empire Online:

"We’re in a holding pattern at the moment. It's up to Marvel, they have to decide if they want to make the movie and then we take it from there."

Yes, someone involved in the film industry misled us! I'm as shocked as Renault (Claude Rains) in Casablanca discovering gambling at Rick's Cafe.

At the moment, I Am Legend screenwriter Mark Protosevich is in the middle of a script polish.

Don't be surprised if Marvel unveils Vaughn's replacement at this year's San Diego Comic Con... if not sooner.

There was a time when I wasn't interested in the G.I. Joe movie. I used to play with the action figures when I was a kid, but it was Ireland in the 1980's and they were known as Action Force, but I didn't hold any excitement for this film.

Then Stephen Sommers signed on. I really love Deep Rising, and I hold a certain respect for The Mummy movies, but he lost me with Van Helsing. It's not that I loathe the film, it's just that it was a wasted opportunity. A huge wasted opportunity.

However, I'm a big fan of Dennis Quaid, there's something about the movies that he's made in the last decade or so that elevate him into the "must watch" priorty list.

In the last day or so a barrage of G.I Joe character pictures have bombarded the net...and they look quite cool.
How Will Iron Man And Speed Racer Do This Weekend?

How will Iron Man do in week 2 and will Speed Racer bomb instead of zoom?

Last week I wrote that I thought it was a ridiculous theory that the release of the Grand Theft Auto IV video game would hurt Iron Man's box office numbers. Instead I wondered whether the release of Speed Racer during the second weekend of the armored avenger's run would put a dent in Tony Stark's armor.

Well it looks like he'll be holding up pretty well against the race car flick as well.

The word on the street is that the Matrix-creators' nostalgia slash acid-trip version of Speed Racer will be lucky if it cracks the $30MM mark this weekend. It's also being estimated that Iron Man will probably bring in about $45MM in it's second weekend, which would mean about a 55% drop from it's premiere last weekend.

Generally a drop anywhere below 60% is a sign that a movie is getting great word of mouth and has "legs." Personally I'm predicting about $50MM this weekend for ol' Shellhead.

Among the movie blogosphere, the consensus for the past weeks and months has been that Speed Racer would make big bucks on it's opening weekend (I thought that myself until very recently) but it's looking like it may not do so well after all. Perhaps the all out psychedelic assault on the audience's senses will be too much for the average moviegoer?

On the other hand you've got to balance this against the fact that parents are desperate for movies they can bring their kids to without worrying about inappropriate content: and Speed Racer is rated an innocuous PG.

It'll be interesting to see how this weekend pans out for both of these mega-movies.

Uh Oh - Hancock is 'Surprisingly Sexual And Violent?'

Hancock isn't the fun, family comedy you think it is

Today is an interesting news day for Sony Pictures' upcoming entry into the summer blockbuster arena: Hancock. I was first tipped off to the actual tone of the film by my pal over at Movies Online, and then received further clarification after reading a post over at /Film.

So what's so interesting?

This movie is not what you think it is, folks. Think it's another light-hearted, funny Will Smith romp?

Think again.

According to an article over at the New York Times, far from being a conventional combination of comedy and superhero flick, Hancock pushes the PG-13 envelope hard. As a matter of fact, up until three weeks ago there was a statutory rape scene in the film.

The film has been to the MPAA twice in the last month to receive a rating and both times it was given an "R."

The goal of course, is to keep cutting away slivers of scenes until they can get it just under the bar and achieve a PG-13.

Director Peter Berg openly admits that a goal of the film is to make the film edgy and not "boring." According to the NY Times:

"The film, he [Berg] said, remained surprisingly sexual, violent and true in spirit to an original script that was viewed as brilliant but unmakable when its creator, Vincent Ngo, first circulated it more than a decade ago under the title 'Tonight, He Comes.'"

One of the things they had to "tone down" from the original script was a scene where Hancock gets drunk with a 12 year old. That was changed to a 17 year old and seems to be the source of the statutory rape scene mentioned above.

Sony executive Amy Pascal comments:

"It’s scary in that it goes farther than we’ve gone before"

Now before you start getting all ornery on me, I have NO problem with an edgy superhero comedy starring Will Smith. What I do have an issue with (and the studio will too, mark my words) is marketing a film as described above as a PG-13, family friendly summer comedy. It's deceptive and it's going to bite them in the ass, guaranteed.

"Oh, but what about 'The Dark Knight?" THAT's a dark movie!"

Yeah, but we know that's going to be a dark movie based on the trailers, images and interviews. My soon-to-be 12 year old daughter has already decided she doesn't want to see it. But Hancock? We've all watched the trailers together, thought it looked funny and had been planning on seeing it as a family.

But not any more.

Hancock opens on July 2, 2008.

First Twilight Trailer Features Creepy Pale People

The first vampire romance aimed directly at teenage girls

Below you can watch the first trailer for a vampire movie called Twilight. The film is based on what I've heard is an outrageously popular book series that's got sort of a teen romantic vampire goth vibe to it.

What, you've never heard of it? Well apparently millions of teenage girls have and they love the books, so this movie is going to make HUGE bank is my guess.

src="http://screenrant.com/mediaplayer/mediaplayer.swf"
width="570"
height="318"
allowscriptaccess="always"
allowfullscreen="true"
flashvars="height=318&width=570&file=http://screenrant.com/trailers2/twilight-trailer1.flv&bufferlength=6"
/>

For higher res versions of the trailer head on over to MySpace.com.

Also, there's nothing much there yet except for the following really really cheesy lines, which should be enough combined with the trailer above to give you a real sense of the story, but here's the official site: TheTwilightMovie.com.

About three things I was absolutely positive.

First, Edward was a vampire.

Second, there was part of him - and I didn't know how potent
that part might be - that thirsted for my blood.

And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably
in love with him.

Ohhhhh, shivers. A girl in love with the ultimate "bad boy."

Although I think this movie will seem to come out of nowhere to most people and be a gigantic hit, unless you're firmly in the target audience of young teen girls I'm betting it'll be painful to watch.

Twilight arrives at theaters on December 12th, 2008.
