Independence Day 2 and 3 Plot Details Independence Day 2 & 3 Plot Details Revealed

The citizens of Earth have had almost 20 years of peace since their planet was rudely invaded by aliens on July 4th, 1996, but recently, there has been talk from director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin that the victory might not last much longer. Two sequels to Independence Day are currently in the works and awaiting a green light from 20th Century Fox. It may well be that the studio is keeping a close eye on the success of Emmerich’s most recent project, White House Down, before giving a thumbs up or thumbs down to Indendence Day 2 and 3, A.K.A. ID Forever Part I and II.

It seems that Emmerich himself is confident enough to start divulging details, or at least savvy enough to start generating hype for the Independence Day sequels by releasing a few intriguing snippets of information.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Emmerich has happily provided solid answers to some of the biggest questions that fans of the original film have had. One of the biggest uncertainties regarding the plot is whether the story would pick up immediately after the events of the first film or twenty years later. According to Emmerich, the answer is is both:

“The humans knew that one day the aliens would come back. And they know that the only way you can really travel in space is through wormholes. So for the aliens, it could take two or three weeks, but for us that’s 20 or 25 years.”

The Independence Day sequels being set only twenty years after the events of the first film will mean that by the time they (potentially) gets a theatrical release they will more or less be set in the present day, but Emmerich claims that the films will also have a distinctly futuristic feel. Based on a “what if…?” scenario of what might have happened to our history if we’d discovered advanced technology back in the nineties, the story will see humanity far more prepared for an invasion than they were in the original film. Says Emmerich:

“It’s a changed world. It’s like parallel history. [Humans] have harnessed all this alien technology. We don’t know how to duplicate it because it’s organically-grown technology, but we know how to take an antigravity device and put it in a human airplane.”

Despite the progress that has been made, Emmerich insists that the fight won’t be an easy one, saying that, “We’ve rebuilt. But [the aliens] also do different things.” If only two or three weeks have passed from the aliens’ perspective, it’s doubtful that they’ve had time to come up with any new major advances themselves, which can only mean that they weren’t bringing out the big guns the first time around. Perhaps the first Independence Day was just a warm-up.

When we first heard rumors about this project several years ago, the impression we got from Fox was that they did not consider Will Smith’s return to be necessary for the film, perhaps due to the large price tag that inevitably comes with hiring such a consistently successful star. It’s unclear whether this was a factor or not, but Emmerich implies that he has written a story which will allow new stars to shine by focusing on characters who would have been children during the first invasion.

“It’s still some of the same characters, but also new younger characters; it’s a little bit like the sons take over. The first one ends on a little success, but only enough to give the humans hope. And then in the second one they free themselves again [from the aliens].”

The word “new” seems to imply that the younger heroes will be characters that we haven’t seen before, but there are a couple of candidates from Independence Day who could easily make a return as adults. The two prominent child characters from the 1996 movie were Patricia Whitmore (Mae Whitman), the daughter of the president, and Captain Steven Hiller’s stepson Dylan, played by Will Smith’s Fresh Prince of Bel Air co-star, Ross Bagley.

Though Bagley has more or less lapsed from the acting world and is mostly remembered for his child star roles in films like Little Rascals, Emmerich confirmed that Dylan makes a return in the latest version of the script. Mae Whitman is still very active and recently appeared in Arrested Development (her?), Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and Parenthood. Might there be room in Emmerich’s customary cast-of-thousands for this familiar face to play the part of a heroine?

To quote Bill Pullman, who recently confirmed his involvement in the project: “Nobody’s holding their breath because [the sequels have] been continually plagued.” So don’t assume that the movie is definitely going to make it out of development hell at this point. Dean Devlin has said that he and Emmerich are not interested in making the sequels just to squeeze a little bit of money out of the Independence Day name; rather, they just have a genuine, creative interest in continuing the story. Whether or not you agree with that no doubt depends on your opinion of the original. It should be noted that Emmerich has yet to make a film as successful as his 1996 blockbuster, at least financially-speaking (The Patriot has a slightly better Rotten Tomatoes score), which might explain Fox’s trepidation.

Are you excited for ID Forever Part I & II and, if so, who would you like to see return for the second invasion (aside from the aliens, of course)? Let us know what you think in the comments.

We’ll keep you up to date on any further developments regarding Independence Day 23.

  1. It’s genius to have the “second generation” in this film. However, I also would love to have several of the big names back at least during the ‘showdown’ part of the movie. YES that will mean. including Will Smith. He was the main character after all. People expect & will be sorely disappointed if the main characters don’t put In an appearance. I’m excited to see what you come up with. I definitely will be waiting to see this movie. GOOD LUCK!!

  2. Its about time, we need another INDEPENDENCE DAY, But it is a Mistake to not offer a part to Will Smith or Vivica A. Fox & the Little boy ! Comon keep it ORIGINAL and then add the new people. If you dont you will only mess it all up and KILL a Great Thing ! !

  3. Unles Jeff Goldblum IS Involved, I dont care to see the film. Goldblum is my all time favorite Actor!

  4. I’d like to very, very much see Will Smith return as Hiller and Vivica A. Fox return as Hiller’s wife. I’d also like to see Jeff Goldbloom return, as well as Margaret Colin who played his ex-wife.

  5. The only thing missing from Independence day was any on land fights…The only one was when Smith punched that one in his face. Would love to see a great mix of on land, air, sea and space battles! I for one am pumped, I.D. was one of the best films to see with a good crowd, we all cheered at the same awesome moments…Cant wait:)

  6. I can’t understand how this is even happening. “Their whole race travels from planet to planet consuming every natural resource before they move on”. The alien race is extinct. So… How have they magically reappeared? I loved ID, which is why I’d rather see a reboot than a sequel. I think neither would be the ideal scenario. Just can’t imagine it workkng

    • Exactly!! That was clearly stated in the movie by the President after the alien entered his mind.

      • Read the article
It explains, its a 2-3week wormhole for them, 20yrs for us.
Maybe they held there strongest back and didn’t hit us with everything they had
Makes perfect sense, for a movie

    • Just because the whole race goes from planet to planet doesn’t mean all mother ships go to the same planet
It would make more sense to send multiple motherships to different planets for different resources.
Once the aliens realized they lost a whole mothership,
They would then send the closest available ships to convene on our planet, arriving at different times which allow for more than one sequel

  7. ID4 was one of the best movies but, since Hollywood and Obama have determined that we need a constant diet of homosexuality, I will not be paying to see this movie. Sorry I don’t believe that our country should have that behavior shoved down our throats.

    • Poor choice of words there …

    • ANTHOINY FEZIO, What is your problem with THE LGBT comunity? I am bysexual and proud of it!!!!!!!!!!!! Who I choose to love is nobody’s business but mine. I apluad Obama for standing up to racist and sochialy unconscious pigs like yourself. Now, to get back on target, I would also love to see Will Smith in this as well.

      • LOL…. Yeah… Obama is one brave MF… When the polls changed. “Mr. Stand Up Guy” changed. Otherwise for fifty years and most of his presidency he was against you, hater

      • “I am bysexual”

Might possibly prove helpful at some point in the future to learn how to spell it, then.

      • like you just made it everybody else’s business… which is why the LGBT community continues to have problems with people who would otherwise leave them alone…

    • phrasing…

  8. Enough of the dam alien movies is that all we can make anymore

Yes first one was really good top ten of mine but understand that asking will to join he’s a diva he not worth the 20 mill asking price get two good actors for ten mill each problem solved yes u have to return most of the cast

    • I personally think there are way to many stupid movies like “Too Fast Too furious” or stupid movies like “twilight or the hunger games” if I want to watch vampires I will watch something cool like “TRUE BLOOD” or if I want to watch A fantasy story with kids and talking animals I will watch Something cool like “HIS Dark materials” or I will read the awesome books that the first movie was made from and two others should have as well, Oh well. I say bring on the Aliens, “STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS” WAS Awesome and I’m looking forward too “enders game” and MY All Time Favorite STAR WARS EPISODE 7, favorite as in the series….

Personally I loved INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL AND IT GETS BETTER WITH AGE LIKE A FINE WINE.

  9. Plot: the aliens use time travel and go back to revive Will Smith’s career.

  10. I thought they’d already done a sequel, or as good as one.

Battle: Los Angeles – and they’re already planning sequels to that as well.

Not complaining mind – I enjoyed both films, and good stories needed a long telling and a well constructed end.

    • You are correct, Battle: Los Angeles would of been a great sequel to it or at least another perspective to the same fight.

  11. You must do ID 2,3 the first was fantastic and I’ve waited so long to see the next one

  13. I love will smith and jeff goldblum. and the film has me so enthralled that I definitely going to wait for the next part. I can’t wait to see in the cinema. I would say make that 2nd part. It is really worth. I would be real money bets. also smart to 2nd generation to bet because it is already more than 10 years ago. new faces is also fun, but then the voltage off. I just want to see the sequel with the fixed familiar faces.

I can’t wait to this 2nd part in the cinema to see.

and Emmerich will leave you feeling not attracting the other people. just go on your own feeling and do what is best. I follow you!!

  14. I absolutely am excited for an ID sequel. I LOVE the first movie. I thought Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum made an excellent team. I’d love them to appear in the sequel.

  15. Well it’s about time. Bring Will Jeff/Dad Viveca/son the President/dgtr
Margaret, kids of abductedkamikazeDAD back. HAVE GREAT GRAPHIC SCENES some
hand to limbs combat. Alien survivors who DID NOT DIE when ships crashed are
the new “bad guys”. With their ability to ‘mind meld’; bad humans. I’d be in
line just like I was for Jaws & Star Wars. Yeah I date myself. Majority of
you were not even ‘born’ then.
    *%*mars

  16. Oh boy…more movies where the white house gets blown up. Also if it’s a sequel, does it conveniently happen on independence day as well? And will it be overly cliche’d as the first film?

  17. Can’t wait for 2 & 3! Really want to see some of the other big names from original ID, Will Smith & Jeff Goldblum.

  18. Yes I would love to see them get made, Emmerich makes Total Popcorn movies. Got to have Pullman & Goldblum signed up, cant wait !

  19. I’ve wanted a sequel to ID from the moment the credits started rolling at the end of the first movie.

Ive always imagined the second movie picking up a few days after the mothership was destroyed. Without their forcefields to protect them, the aliens that didnt die from the explosions would have hidden and regrouped for a ground war while waiting for reinforcements. But the humans find them and wipe them out…or do they?

  20. Independence day was hands down some the the best movies I have seen will smith is a great actor and could only benefit ID forever part one at least and as far as any of the younger actors I think it would be a really cool mixture of the new age and the old school characters of these series I think these movie should get the green light.

  21. Would Love Love Love a sequel!!!!!!

  22. I hope they bring back Goldblum too. His science knowledge should be useful for training people and re-tooling the alien tech. They have to get Will Smith in this movie. With Smith and a really well written script this could be like a Terminator 2 like continuation of the original movie.

  23. YES YES YES… WE NEED THESE FILMS SOON…. VERY VERY SOON. TELL ME WHAT I NEED TO DO TO MAKE THEM HAPPEN. OUR FAMILY WATCHES INDEPENDENCE DAY EVERY 4TH OF JULY; ADDING TWO MORE MOVIES WOULD BE AWESOME AND MAKE FOR A GREAT MOVIEGOER DAY.

  24. NO!!!!

ID is the perfect movie. Don’t bastardise the sanctity of it’s majesty by having some substandard movie that’s all CGI and no substance just for ratings.

It just isn’t worth it. Don’t reboot the original either.

Just rerelease it in all it’s glory!

  25. HECK YA BRING on ID 2,3&4 , we have been waiting !

  26. ID4 was a great film. Would love to see a sequel with Wil Smith. Saw White House Down btw, and it was a great movie too.

  27. Without Will Smith a lot of fans wont pay to see, bring him bak!!!

  28. Kinda lame without Will Smith in it… Would be interesting if his son would be the main character. I dislike when they do sequels of impacting movies and don’t try satisfy the old audience.

  29. Please bring back the over the top jewish guy.

Best character in the movie. :)
