Jim Carrey is going for a strong year at the cinema, between his potential scene-stealing roles as Colonel Stars and Stripes in Kick-Ass 2 (which arrives in August), and a Criss Angel-esque illusionist in this month’s comedy offering The Incredible Burt Wonderstone.
Steve Carell and Steve Buscemi star as Burt Wonderstone and his longtime partner Anton Marvelton: two Las Vegas performers, whose magician act has become as stale and tacky as their fake tans, blonde locks and velvet costumes. Both of these aging illusionists must find a way to spruce up their style, once a hip street magician (Carrey) arrives on the scene and begins soaking up all the attention with a series of increasingly-deranged stunts.
The Incredible Burt Wonderstone supporting cast includes familiar faces like James Gandolfini (Zero Dark Thirty), Olivia Wilde (Cowboys & Aliens), Jay Mohr (Street Kings) and Oscar-winner Alan Arkin (Argo) playing Mr. Wonderstone’s childhood hero: the magician Rance Holloway.

Incredible Burt Wonderstone was co-written by John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein (Horrible Bosses), while directing responsibilities were handled by Don Scardino: a Primetime Emmy-winning television director with over twenty years of experience working on small screen comedy shows like Tracy Takes On…, Cosby, Hope & Faith and 30 Rock (which snagged him a handful of award nominations and wins).
Judging by the trailers and preview footage, Incredible Burt Wonderstone looks to be the sort of serviceable pre-Spring release helping of laughs you might expect – based on the writers’ previous output and Scardino’s lack of experience making big screen fare, that is. It shouldn’t have much trouble clearing the comedy bar right now, after stuff like A Haunted House and Identity Thief.

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone opens in U.S. theaters on March 15th, 2013.
