While many of us have been trying to decipher the plot of Chris Nolan’s Inception, few details about the upcoming sci-fi/thriller have actually come to light. Besides the fact that this is a movie “from the director of The Dark Knight” with Leonardo DiCaprio in the starring role, people hardly know what to expect. Not even the teaser trailer helped all that much.

During various press tours and interviews with the cast and director, a few Inception details have started to spill over the last few months; now we’re collecting them here to share.

Most of this information that follows was actually hunted down and first collected by our good friends over at /Film – so be sure to thank them for keeping you up to speed on this labyrinthine film that is Inception. We’ve simply added a few choice details, in case you missed them.

  • In an upcoming issue of Empire Magazine, Chris Nolan mentions that he was only 16 when he came up with the concept for Inception.
  • Leonardo DiCaprio recently told the website Movies.ie that Inception‘s runtime is about two hours long.
  • The Playlist has highlighted a new quote from Nolan, which confirms an exclusive rumor broken last summer by In Contention regarding Inception‘s plot.

Here’s the new quote from Nolan:

“Basically the film deals with levels of reality, and perceptions of reality which is something I’m very interested in. Its an action film set in a contemporary world, but with a slight science-fiction bent to it. Cobb [Leonardo DiCaprio's character], who is the center of things and expert in a particular technology that the film revolves around, has put this team around him [Ellen Page, Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon Levitt]. It’s very much an ensemble film structured somewhat as a heist movie. It’s an action adventure that spans the globe.”

Speaking of the story that In Contention broke last year, here are some rumored details about the characters being played by the supporting cast. WARNING, these could be considered MINOR SPOILERS, even though they are still RUMORS at this point. As stated by In Contention:

Ellen Page will play Ariadne, a young college student studying in Paris who is a part of Cobb’s team (along with Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Arthur and Tom Hardy’s Eames).  Cobb’s team actually “creates” the dreams and Ariadne is an “architect” of the them.  She engineers them.

Cillian Murphy stars as Fischer, a business-type who is soon to become the head of a company.  Cobb’s team is attempting to insert an idea into Fischer’s mind to compel him to separate the company into two smaller companies.  The reasoning for this is unclear on my end.

Ken Watanabe plays Saito, a character blackmailing Cobb.  For what reason and to what extreme, I do not know.

If you want to know more about these rumored plot details of Inception, then head on over to In Contention.

This movie still sounds really interesting to me and with Nolan behind it I’m sure there are going to be twists, turns and plenty of heady ideas we’re left to think about at the end. However, in terms of actual, factual, confirmed details about the movie? Well, at this point not even DiCaprio can explain for sure what Nolan has in store for us. But then that’s half the fun of a Chris Nolan movie.

Inception will be in theaters on July 16, 2010

  1. My most anticipated movie of 2010 because Nolan is my favorite director. That, and I didn't wet my pants over Iron Man like everyone else did, I just thought it was good, so yeah, I'm not AS excited for Iron Man 2 but it still looks very good.

  2. Literally my EXACT same feelings Stephen. Nolan is hands down my favorite writer, director, producer, movie god. And I really enjoyed Iron Man, thought it was fun and entertaining, but IM2 looks exactly like the first one, but with more action and Mickey Rourke.

  3. I love Christopher Nolan and Leonardo DiCaprio. This movie sounds great. I just hope that it's really twisty and trippy without being super confusing. I like really twist-laden, awesome movies as long as all the answers are still provided.

I actually hope I leave the theater saying “what the hell was that?” That's how I felt about The Matrix and after Shutter Island. These movies get us talking for days afterwards and those are the ones I love the most. The Shutter Island spoilers thread is almost up to 1000 comments lol. I love movies like that.

  5. I love both of those movies and would not place them in the “super confusing category.” What I would place in that category is Memento. It was totally twisty and mind-blowing but it was confusing because they never gave you strong options of what happened. It was kind of completely open to interpretation without any answers given. I'm not saying it was a poorly-made film or anything (in fact it was genius) but my personal preference is mind-blowing movies where you feel like you have a good idea of most of what happened.

  6. That's actually kinda why it's my favorite movie, I have an opinion about what happens in the end that not many agree with and I love the long and drawn out conversations that can happen because of movies like that. I would sorta like a little more clarification than Memento, I guess like The Prestige, because Memento's ending and complete openness is something I don't think should be made twice.

  7. I love movies about dreams. Everyone should know by now that the “technology” is an injection that enables you to go into other peoples dreams, and their job is to get evidence and info out of people.

  9. looking forward to this a lot, plus it looks like a casting call for Batman 3 as well. Nolan, like most good directors, likes working with familiar faces so expect to see Leonardo Dicaprio go up against Batman! The Inception trailer gives me the same buzz as the Matrix did when i 1st saw it. It’s nice that a director still caters for grown ups in this dumb down blockbuster era we find ourselves in.
