The classic Nickelodeon show SpongeBob Squarepants has been fodder for memes for as long as memes have existed.
Millennials are the generation who grew up with SpongeBob, and now that they’ve grown up, they’re appreciating the show in a whole new way: with hilarious memes, gifs, and screen caps.
SpongeBob memes have definitely increased in recent years, with “Mocking SpongeBob” being the latest to take over the internet. Something about this cartoon makes it work really well for memes. For one, it’s an excellent show, loved by fans and critics alike. It’s classic ’00s nostalgia. It’s still on in 2017, so it remains relevant.
The humor and the writing are sophisticated, which makes the show enjoyable not just for kids but also for adults. There are jokes that are meant for adults that kids wouldn’t fully understand.
Here are 15 Inappropriate SpongeBob SquarePants Memes That Make You Feel Bad For Laughing.
15. Sweater of tears
This meme perfectly articulates the problem of what to wear on the first day of school. It’s not a good day. No one wants to start the school year. The blissful relaxation of summer is gone and you’re back to the stale hell that is the education system. But you also want to look nice so that you make a good impression on your teachers and look cool in front of all your fellow students.
So, you begrudgingly put on one of your best shirts and grimace in acknowledgement to your peers, a grimace that says, “It’s nice to see you again but I wish it were under different circumstances.”
This screen cap occurs when SpongeBob makes Squidward a sweater out of SpongeBob’s eyelashes for Employee Brotherhood Day. Squidward is disgusted and rejects it, so SpongeBob makes a sweater of tears.
14. When you’re too lazy to take a shower
This meme hits too close to home for lazy people.
Sometimes, it’s hard to motivate yourself to shower. Humans have to shower so often. No wonder we get sick of it. But then once you’re in the shower, you’re enjoying the hot water and you don’t wanna leave. This meme is too real because we’re all guilty of not showering as much as we should.
SpongeBob’s body language is also super relatable here. Who among us hasn’t sat in a really uncomfortable position in a chair but been to lazy or dejected to move?
This line occurs in the episode “Welcome to the Chum Bucket” when Plankton is doing everything in his power to coerce SpongeBob into making him a Krabby Patty and he keeps refusing. But it’s also just so relatable out of context.
13. Why go outside when there’s Netflix?
Look, we all know that we should go outside every day to get some fresh air and exercise. But sometimes staying inside and watching Netflix is more fun.
Patrick has a point when he says “We have technology.” Gone are the days where we went outside in order to have fun.
Back in the old days, you went out to play with your friends or take a walk because there TV and the Internet and smart phones didn’t exist yet. But now, we don’t have to go outside!
We can have arguably more fun inside with our gadgets. We can enjoy whole new levels of entertainment like binging a TV show on Netflix that make going for a bike ride or playing hopscotch seem boring.
12. F is for friends who do stuff without you
This meme is a meeting of two major forces on tumblr: talking about your depression and making memes.
The original poster wrote a very sad remix of the “The F.U.N. Song.” SpongeBob sings it to teach Plankton how to have fun. Then it starts to spell the F word. Then the OP tries to regain control of the conversation. His or her “this is not what i wanted this post to turn out like” shouldn’t be funny. Clearly this person wanted to vent about their horrible life while making a bitter joke about SpongeBob. But the rest of Tumblr had a little too much fun with it.
The story about getting out of the shower to find everyone gone really shouldn’t be funny, but it’s so sad that you have to laugh. And then some deranged jokester is so determined for humor to win that they use all caps to type the original last line of the verse.
11. These boots are made for walking
This one is just absurd.
It’s hysterically funny because the look on SpongeBob’s face is so strange: evil and mischievous. Of course, the real-life experience that this meme speaks to is that feeling when you try so hard to prepare for a date that you psych yourself out and act like a crazy person. Maybe you’ll suddenly decide to wear eyeliner for the first time or do something different with your hair, to disastrous results. And since you’re overthinking everything, you act way more weird and awkward than you would normally.
It’s always funny when a SpongeBob meme is sexual in any way, because the show isn’t sexual, at least on the surface (it can be if you’re watching carefully). So having SpongeBob be a manifestation of our first date weirdness is a strange juxtaposition because he is so nonsexual.
10. You gave me the ugly
This is actually a great way to get your parents to stop nagging you about your nonexistent love life.
So what does Patrick mean by “the ugly“? This line is from the episode “Something Smells”, in which SpongeBob eats a sundae made of trash and has terrible breath as a result. He can’t figure out that his halitosis is why everyone in town is ignoring him, so Patrick posits that it’s because he’s ugly. Later, Patrick eats some of the sundae and people start running from him, causing him to think he caught “the ugly” from SpongeBob. But the way that he says “the ugly” as if it’s a noun is just too funny. Eventually, they figure out that the cause is their breath.
Why is is that we always seem to love our jobs again right after we get paid?
SpongeBob’s job as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab is a big part of his life. His trials and tribulations at work are part of what makes the show relatable for adults. We all feel that our jobs are not fair sometimes. If we’re feeling particularly dramatic, we might fantasize about going on strike.
These completely different signs joined to make a before and after perfectly capture the complete 180 you experience when that direct deposit hits your bank account. Before that, you were thinking “I hate this job, every minute is misery, I should quit.” Then when you see how much money you got this week, you think “This company is great!”.
SpongeBob fans know that in this picture, SpongeBob is extremely dehydrated and desperately needs water.
The screen cap comes from “Tea at the Treedome,” the episode in which SpongeBob first meets Sandy. He’s taken with her, and accepts her invitation to visit her treedome. He also pretends to know what she’s talking about when she mentions air because he wants to seem smart.
When he gets there, he realizes there’s no water in the dome, just air, since that’s how Sandy can breathe. So he quietly suffers because he’s too embarrassed to say anything about needing water.
7. SpongeBob SquarePants x Orange Is the New Black
We wouldn’t have thought that a mashup of SpongeBob SquarePants and Orange Is the New Black would work. They have nothing in common. SpongeBob is a children’s cartoon. Orange Is the New Black is a drama for adults. SpongeBob is about the adventures of a happy sponge. Orange Is the New Black is about life in a women’s prison. And yet, some genius found the one episode of SpongeBob that would make this joke work: the episode in which Mrs. Puff goes to jail.
The similarities are striking. Mrs. Puff looks like she could be Red, Litchfield’s head chef. The smug blonde fish who looks like she thinks she’s too good for everyone could be Piper. And then there’s a bunch of scary-looking women who look who seem like they could definitely hurt you.
6. I lost something once
This screen cap of SpongeBob sitting in a diner over a cup of coffee, staring blankly ahead is perfectly applicable to anything. He looks depressed and aimless.
Sitting alone in a deserted diner with an untouched cup of coffee is a well-known trope in film and TV used when a character is despondent, troubled, or doesn’t know what to do with themselves. They’re liable to start telling their problems to the strangers sitting at the counter. It’s so over the top and film noir that it’s the perfect meme for when you’re feeling dramatic because none of your friends are free.
This meme is perfect in its bluntness.
It context, it’s not meant to be a sick burn. It occurs when Sandy is preparing to take on the Alaskan Bull Worm and SpongeBob is trying to stop her for her own safety. She asks SpongeBob who put the K in karate, and replies, “You did,” transforming into a U shape for extra emphasis.
We’ve all been in a situation where the person causing the problem is also an idiot and is completely unaware that they’re causing the problem. It’s so obvious – so obvious that you wish you could just transform your body in a U shape just to make it very clear that it’s them. Or, if you’re feeling passive aggressive, just send the person this meme.
4. Sleeping Squidward
This meme is a riff on the Sleeping Squidward meme. The original meme shows a picture of Squidward’s closed eyes while he’s sleeping, followed by a picture of his eyes open and bloodshot as he suddenly wakes up. The meme is usually used as a reaction pic for suddenly remembering or hearing something that jolts you awake.
On the show, the reason Squidward wakes him is because he realizes he’s just fallen asleep with SpongeBob in his bed. He wakes with a start and kicks his neighbor out.
But here, the second picture is the same as the first: closed eyes. We really shouldn’t laugh at the concept of not caring whether you get killed by a murderer who is downstairs in your house, but we do anyway.
3. SpongeBob SquarePants x Fifty Shades of Grey
Only someone with a truly dirty mind would think to make a mashup of SpongeBob SquarePants and Fifty Shades of Grey. Well, maybe you mind doesn’t need to be that dirty, since the raw material was already there. After all, here we have Mr. Krabs dressed in a BDSM outfit.
There are a lot of jokes and references in SpongeBob that are inappropriate for children, but it’s still a little surprising to see just how much imagery is sexual. What did our younger selves think when we saw Mr. Krabs dressed like that? Or did we not think about it at all?
The top left picture is from when Patrick was trying to cure SpongeBob of the suds by plugging all his holes. Innocent enough, but SpongeBob’s facial expression just looks so dirty that we can’t unsee it.
2. College life
This is so painfully true for anyone who’s experienced college.
It’s all here: having a nervous breakdown in class, being poor because of all those student loans and expensive textbooks, pulling an all-nighter and finally coming out of the other side with your finished essay, and getting super wild at the local bar with friends.
You wouldn’t think that SpongeBob SquarePants would be the source of screen caps that could be so relatable for people who have gone to college. After all, the show isn’t really about school (although SpongeBob does go to driver’s ed, but that’s not really the same thing). Most of the characters are adults with jobs. But that’s just the magic of SpongeBob: it’s so universally relatable. Some lines are so real that they can be relevant for a wide variety of situations.
1. Le Spatula
How can a simple spatula compete with one that’s actually ten spatulas?
The spatula on the left is Spat the spatula, a regular spatula that serves as SpongeBob’s trusty appliance for flipping Krabby Patties. It breaks when a customer orders a Monster Krabby Patty, so SpongeBob buys Le Spatula as a replacement.
The spatula on the right is called Le Spatula. It’s a fancy, expensive robot spatula that speaks with a French accent and only works at fancy restaurants. If it’s at a non-fancy restaurant, like the Krusty Krab, it refuses to work.
Ultimately, SpongeBob goes back to faithful old Spat because Le Spatula refuses to work for SpongeBob and the Krusty Krab. This ruins the logic of the meme, but we’ll just ignore that…
