Here’s an old story: boy meets girl, they fall in love and live happily ever after. Here’s the same story with a twist: boy doesn’t meet girl, but they fall in love anyway. If the second version of the story seems a little suspect, then allow the Joss Whedon-scripted supernatural romance In Your Eyes to explain just how it works.

Directed by Brin Hill (Balls Don’t Lie), In Your Eyes stars Zoe Kazan and Michael Stahl-David as Rebecca Porter and Dylan Kershaw, two people who live hundreds of miles away and lead very different lives. Rebecca is a quiet, well-mannered doctor’s wife living on the East Coast and Dylan is an ex-con trying to get his life started again in New Mexico. They would have remained total strangers, were it not for an odd metaphysical quirk that causes them to occasionally see, hear and feel each other’s experiences.

In Your Eyes has now been rush-released on VOD and a full trailer has accompanied the release, complete with cute indie music and accolades from the early reviews. In Your Eyes has so far been received pretty positively by critics, eliciting thumbs-up reviews rather than rave reviews, and Whedon’s involvement is sure to attract a fair bit of attention. It worked on us, at least.

Based on the trailer, In Your Eyes looks like an unashamedly romantic movie that should be perfect for those who love a good love story, but prefer ones that exist of the usual Hollywood formula. Even if you’re not sold on the idea of two people falling for each over a great distance, the supernatural/sci-fi elements make for a pretty interesting central concept.

For those who have been sold on In Your Eyes by this trailer (or the opening scene), the movie is available to rent right now on Vimeo. It’s $5 for a 72 hour streaming rental, which means you can watch it approximately 48 times if you really want to make the most of your $5.
