Idris Elba and Zoe Saldana will be joining Jeffrey “The Comedian” Dean Morgan for the big-screen adaptation of DC/Vertigo’s The Losers.

Elba is best known for his roles on HBO’s The Wire, and currently The Office. The lovely Saldana is poised to be a breakout name in 2009 with starring roles in J.J. Abram’s Star Trek reboot and director James Cameron’s 3D sci-fi epic, Avatar.

Quite a winning cast for The Losers.

For those who aren’t familiar: The Losers was a DC/Vertigo comic book series that ran from August 2003 to March 2006. It chronicles the story of a special forces unit tasked with waging the war on terror, who are ultimately betrayed by their handler, “Max,” and get left for dead. Of course they don’t die, but instead band together to get their revenge on Max, and also wipe their names and identities off a CIA “death list.”

Elba is in talks to play “Roque,” The Losers‘ scarred-faced second-in-command, whose only motivation is the money. Saldana is supposedly in talks to play Aisha, the group’s hard-ass hothead.

Zoe Saldana will be livewire killer, Aisha

This is good news, IMO. The Losers comic book never made it onto my radar (although the premise sounds pretty cool). I gave the film half a nod when I heard that Jeffrey Dean Morgan was going to be playing the group’s leader, Clay, but now that I know that Elba and Saldana (two actors I consider to be fast-rising stars) are on board, The Losers is suddenly gaining a lot of clout with me.

Joel (The Matrix) Silver is producing The Losers. Sylvain White (Stomp the Yard) will helm the film and the script was written by James Vanderbilt (Zodiac). The Losers is currently slated for a 2011 release.

What do you think about Idris Elba and Zoe Saldana joining The Losers?

  1. I’m loving the casting they have done so far, plus the Writer from Zodiac, then I guess Joel Silver is an ok Producer, this movie should be amazing.

  2. Nice, Stringer Bell getting more and more work!

“Joel Silver is an ok Producer”? Homey, Lethal Weapon 1,2,3,4; Predator; RockNRolla; Kiss Kiss Bang Bang; V For Vendetta; Swordfish; 48 Hrs.; The Matrix Trilogy; Assassins; Demoliton Man; Die Hard 1 & 2; Action Jackson; COMMANDO!!!!
Plus he produced one of the most influential TV shows EVER: Action.

Okay, aside from The Invasion, Thirteen Ghosts and Ghotika, the dude is a legend!

  3. Idris Elba is a very cool actor. Loved him in Ultraviolet (underseen vampire tv series here in the UK)

  4. I’ve never heard of this comic but it sounds like it could be a fun movie.

    @ the git

what else has elba done ?
    he looks familiar.

  5. Well from a British view he has done a lot of tv. I could recognise him (not by name though) when he did Ultraviolet and that was in the late 90s I think.

Seems to have a done a fair bit of tv in the States too. Having a quick look, he has been in movies like American Gangster, the Reaping, and 28 Weeks Later. Although don’t remember him much in those myself.

He is one of those people you see a lot but isn’t the star so you don’t see his name much.

  6. @steven the git and RastaZen

In the states Elba is most well known for his genre-shattering turn on HBO’s The Wire (see it if you haven’t), where he played a drug kingpin going to business school while trying to apply a corporate model to the drug game.

He just made a debut on the U.S. version of The Office a few weeks ago and that will probably introduce him to a whole new audience. He’s been having a good couple of years over here.

  7. The Wire is being shown over here now, so just starting to see him strut his stuff.

Liked his first scene where he’s scribbling while sat in the courtroom.

  8. steven the git, Elba plays one of the BEST characters on the show and in ALL of television history…Stringer Bell!
Trust me, you’ll start strutting and talking like Stringer soon enough, I know I have, the character & the way Elba portrays him is just that good!
