Phillip Noyce Looking To Direct ‘Hunter Killer’

2 years ago by Sandy Schaefer

Salt director Phillip Noyce may helm Hunter Killer Phillip Noyce Looking To Direct Hunter Killer

Phillip Noyce may have passed on helming Salt 2 with Angelina Jolie, but that doesn’t mean the former Jack Ryan franchise director is hanging up his action hat just yet. He’s currently in discussions to direct a different thrill ride (one that also involves Russians, no less), titled Hunter Killer.

Don Keith and George Wallace’s as-yet unpublished novel “Firing Point” is the source material for the project, which District B13 filmmaker Pierre Morel was previously circling, but has seemingly passed on.

Moviehole has pointed out that while Noyce is currently attached to direct a number of future projects (most of which are stuck in development limbo right now), he could end up getting to work on Hunter Killer next. The film is described as being a Black Hawk Down-style action piece that revolves around an American submarine commander and a Navy SEAL team, who join forces to rescue a Russian president in danger of being overthrown in a coup led by a renegade admiral.

Noyce’s specialty is arguably that of high-stakes thrillers involving government agents hailing both from and outside the jurisdiction of the U.S. Besides directing Jolie in Salt and Harrison Ford in his two outings as iconic CIA analyst Jack Ryan (Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger), Noyce was also in the head chair for the Michael Caine mystery/drama, The Quiet American. Needless to say, if you hail from the States in one of Noyce’s movies, chances are you’re in for a ride.

Salt may not have been the greatest summer action pic ever (Screen Rant‘s Kofi Outlaw appropriately called it “a decent spy-thriller” in his review), but it was entertaining enough and demonstrated that the 60-year-old Noyce knows how to deliver an exciting ride full of death-defying stunts, car crashes that involve more than just CGI vehicles, and bone-cracking hand to hand combat. Pulling that off in the age of the Jason Bourne movies is no small task, and there’s little reason to doubt that Noyce can do it again in Hunter Killer.

Relativity optioned “Firing Point” back in 2008, and the novel should be available for purchase before Hunter Killer actually hits theaters. So long as Noyce does sign on for the film, it should be able to attract some solid starring talent too. As always, we’ll keep you posted.
