[SPOILERS for Mockingjay – Part 1 ahead.]

This year sees the final installment of Lionsgate’s wildly successful Hungers Games franchise hit theaters with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2. The film picks up events directly from where Mockingjay Part – 1 left off, wasting little time before Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) leads the forces of Panem’s growing rebellion in an attack on The Capital.

Already we’ve seen a few teasers, trailers, and posters that all hint at the decidedly more war-like tone of Mockingjay – Part 2. Not to say the “games” of The Hunger Games weren’t as dangerous and deadly as actually warfare, but this time around Katniss will find herself leading an assault instead of trying to keep herself and her fellow tributes alive. Of course, she’ll need to do that too, because President Snow (Donald Sutherland) and The Capital will exhaust everything at their disposal to keep a hold on the Districts of Panem.

In addition to following Katniss on the front lines, Mockingjay – Part 2 will also focus on Peeta Mellark’s (Josh Hutcherson) state of mind after being rescued from The Capital’s clutches. After being captured at the end of Catching Fire, Peeta spent all of the previous film as Snow’s prisoner, being routinely brainwashed and turned into a propaganda pawn for The Capital. His mental anguish was evident during Part – 1‘s final moments and his recovery will surely play a role in Part – 2, further highlighting that not all casualties of war earn their scars on the battlefield.

The above Mockingjay – Part 2 preview – or ‘Message from District 13’, if you will – was shown as part of the film’s panel in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con 2015. A full-length trailer was also screened (twice), teasing Katniss (and a recovered Peeta, among others) leading the assault against the Capitol – and the various, twisted, traps (which include collapsing floors and buildings that shoot out flames from the side) that President Snow’s forces have set around the city, in order to foil any invasions. That new Mockingjay – Part 2 theatrical trailer should be made available online in the relatively near future.

Not to be overlooked, Gale (Liam Hemsworth) will continue to play a larger role than he had in either The Hunger Games or Catching Fire – where he was relegated to simply watching the games from District 12. Like in Mockingjay – Part 1, Gale will work alongside Katniss, having already proved himself a more than capable soldier and formidable freedom fighter. How all this will affect Katniss’ affections for both Peeta and Gale remains to be seen (though obviously fans of the books are aware of which man she chooses, if either), but it’s very likely this personal struggle for Katniss will be wrapped up in the larger sociopolitical struggle of Panem.

Unsurprisingly, Mockingjay – Part 2 is coming from the same creative team that brought us Part – 1, with director Francis Lawrence working from a script penned by Danny Strong and Peter Craig. Director Lawrence, during the film’s SDCC 2015 panel, indicated that like the previous installments, Mockingjay – Part 2 won’t stray too far from the source material by Suzanne Collins (including, the Mockingjay book’s epilogue).

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 opens in U.S. theaters on November 20th, 2015. Stay tuned to Screen Rant for more SDCC 2015 coverage throughout the week!
