Just as the Twilight and Harry Potter franchises had their final chapters split across two movies, the third book in the Hunger Games trilogy is being released as The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 & Part 2 (in November 2014 and November 2015, respectively). While many of the characters in the final book are survivors from the previous two, there are also a number of new characters, and casting for those roles has already begun.
Those who haven’t read the books upon which The Hunger Games is based may have already guessed from the foreshadowing – both in The Hunger Games and in the trailers for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire – that an upheaval of the status quo is on its way as the downtrodden masses of Panem grow angry at being kept in poverty and forced to sacrifice their children every year. It’s not only people in the Districts who decide to rise up, however; Cressida, a film director from the Capitol, takes the side of Katniss and her allies in Suzanne Collins’ final book of the series.
Now Coming Soon reports that Hunger Games fans can put a face to Cressida’s name: Natalie Dormer will play the filmmaker-turned-revolutionary, joining the regular cast that includes Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth. If the rumors are true, she will also make her first appearance alongside Julianne Moore as President Alma Coin.
This step into the future will be something of a change for Dormer, who is better known for starring in the historical drama The Tudors as Anne Boleyn, in Game of Thrones as Margaery Tyrell, and in Elementary as Moriarty. She also had a small role in Captain America: The First Avenger, and played a ghost in the short-lived supernatural drama series The Fades.
In the books, Cressida is described as being bald with tattoos all over her scalp, in keeping with the often-eclectic fashion tastes of Capitol society. This could certainly be an interesting look for Dormer, though who knows if she’ll go to the same extremes that Karen Gillan did for Guardians of the Galaxy and shave her head entirely.
Dormer is accompanied by a film crew consisting of her assistant Messalla and cameramen Pollux and Castor, none of whom have yet been cast. Tell us in the comments which names you think would be ideal for as-yet uncast characters in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 and Part 2.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire opens in regular and IMAX theaters on November 22, 2013.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 releases on November 21, 2014, while Part 2 opens November 20, 2015.
