[UPDATE: Check out the latest Hunger Games Poster!]

Fans of The Hunger Games novels will jump for joy with today’s new image from the upcoming film adaptation by Seabiscuit director Gary Ross. The image shows our heroes Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) about to (literally) light up the opening ceremonies of the titular Hunger Games, thanks to some pyrotechnic costumes designed by their team stylist, Cinna (Lenny Kravitz).

Scroll down for the new image.

For the unfamiliar: The Hunger Games takes place in a dystopian future in which a fascistic government city rules over 12 impoverished districts in the remnants of what was once America. After a failed rebellion by the districts, the capital created “The Hunger Games,” a televised tournament in which a male and female teenager from each district fight to the death in a high-tech arena, as a reminder of the capital’s might.

When District 12 teen Katniss Everdeen sees her younger sister picked for the games, she volunteers to take her place and finds herself side-by-side with baker’s son Peeta Mellark, headed for the flamboyant futuristic metropolis of the capital city. There, Katniss and Peeta meet the team of coaches and stylists that will guide them through the games – including the enigmatic Cinna, a quiet and unassuming designer who just might be the biggest advantage Katniss and Peeta have.

It looks like Oscar-nominated costume designer Judianna Makovsky (Seabiscuit, Harry Potter) has done a wonderful job bringing both the general aesthetic of Suzanne Collins’ novels to life – as well as the looks and designs strategically plotted by Cinna to make his two subjects from the coal-mining District 12 stand out in the games.

The image is also a great tease, as fans will almost certainly feel the agony of this almost-but-not-quite look at Katniss and Peeta in their fire costumes – a moment that marks one of the first turning points for Katniss.

With this tease, and all the spare morsels offered by The Hunger Games trailer, Lionsgate is doing a good job building anticipation for the film amongst established fans and newcomers alike, while still managing not to give away the whole film.

The Hunger Games opens on March 23, 2012.

  1. I’ve never read the novels but for some reason, I’m excited and can’t wait to see the film. I truly hope is not some Twilight version of “No Escape”. Hopefully, I’m proven wrong.

    • I hadn’t read the books, but after seeing the preview for the movie and reading the synopsis I thought I would give it a shot. The books are WAY better than Twilight probably because there isn’t so much of the sappy love stuff. Don’t get me wrong there’s still a bit of a love story, but without all the painful dialogue and silence. Oh and I read all three books in about 5 days. Twilight took me around 2 weeks. I couldn’t put the Hunger Games down.

      • Same. I got the first one for christmas and finished in a day and went out and bought the other two. And yeah there is a love story but it isn’t annoying and it actually drives the plot in a good way.

  2. I really enjoyed the first book, in fact, I was up til 5 am finishing it, but felt the second and third book were okay but did not live up to the intensity of the fist book.

I have seen the trailer and everything looks too clean for a dystopian society. I would have expected a grittier look and theme. I think it will be a successful movie but I feel it looks too polished for the material.

  3. look…im a HUGE hungergames fan, ill be there opening night if i can.
But i would LOVE to see some shots of anything other than people sitting/standing around.
    come on now!
side note..again with the twilight/Hunger games match up, not even close to the same thing…might as well lump Harry Potter in there because there are “young people” involved.

  4. The only reason I made the comparison to Twilight is because it’s the same studio behind them but you’re right. They really don’t look nothing alike. The concerns I keep hearing is how epic the book is and that with the budget they had, it might not look or live up to the locales that the book are placed on. IDK if that’s true or not but again, as a person that knows nothing about it, Im excited.

  5. She may be too beautiful for Katniss but I have no complaints. I loved the books! Looking forward to this trilogy.

    • Well once she was in the games didn’t everyone always say how beautiful she is once she was cleaned up?

      • Yes they mention her being very striking. For some reason I didn’t take striking as beautiful I took it as memorable and that’s what kind of theme kept on going. Also I was just commenting on how attractive she is really :)

  6. Can we expect one more trailer before the release?

    • Draagyn,

I don’t know for sure but I would guess we’ll probably see a new trailer before the movie opens. All we’ve had so far is a very short teaser and one full trailer that was released a couple of months ago for a film that doesn’t seem to be getting a lot of promotion yet.

      • Yeah, the promotion has been weak. I expect we may get a trailer before “man on a ledge” or ” journey 2 the mysterious island”. If we do, we will get to see scenes from the actual games! :D

  7. Actually very excited for this movie. The first book was very good. the second and third were meh, but should still make for good movies.

  8. Love the poster and pic. It looks like i will highly enjoy the film :)

  9. I’m soooo looking forward to this!

  10. Awesome! Awesome!

  11. If you haven’t read the books I URGE YOU TO READ THEM – they are fabulous and I so hope that the next adaption is as good as ‘Hunger Games’ which was totally brillant.
Being British i love Harry Potter but having read the HG trilogy, I am 100% certain that the Yanks did a amazing job adapting ‘Hunger Games’ – more so than HP – so please, please do a brillant job on ‘Catching Fire’ and the casting for HG was brillant – I could not see anyone but JL and JH as Katniss and Peeta. They are totally awsome and by the, keep up the kissing, we want more kissing in CF! When I look back at the novels, they immediately spring to mind – fab casting.
