Lionsgate’s big screen adaptation of the popular young adult novel, The Hunger Games made headlines on almost a daily basis this past April due to the studio’s slow-burn approach to announcing casting updates on the project – which, as it were, looks to have been a successful marketing tactic.

Now the studio has unleashed a more visually appealing (in all meanings of the term) tidbit for Hunger Games fans: the first official image of Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen in the motion picture.

For those late to the party, here is the lowdown on The Hunger Games:

In a not-too-distant future, the United States of America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year, two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts, the televised games are broadcasted throughout Panem as the 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch.

Katniss’ younger sister, Prim (Willow Shields) is the one who actually “wins” in the Hunger Games lottery, but her strong-willed and protective sibling takes her place in the titular competition. So does Lawrence have the look of a young woman who (if needs be) is capable of kicking some serious butt?

Check out Lawrence as Katniss on the EW cover below:

Hunger Games book fans should be pleased to see that Lawrence (via the magic of makeup and hair dye) has adapted the olive-skin tone and darker hair color that Katniss is described as having in Suzanne Collins’ original novel; the bow and arrows are also a nice touch to further emphasize the idea that this is one adolescent girl not to be reckoned with. One could nitpick about how natural her appearance (with regards to her tan complexion or grey eyes) is, but Lawrence honestly looks close enough to Katniss as originally described – for us, at least.

Director Gary Ross took a lot of slack for his decision to cast the pale-skinned, blonde-haired Lawrence as Katniss in his Hunger Games adaptation, but the actress’ screen test for the part also sat well with Collins (who even publicly voiced her approval of the casting decision). While it might have been nice to see another more-than-capable young actress who naturally looks like Katniss as Collins described her (like True Grit‘s Hailee Steinfeld) take on the part, Lawrence nonetheless seems positioned to make an excellent impression in the film.

The Hunger Games arrives in theaters on March 23rd, 2012.

  1. She looks nice, but did they spray paint a tan on her?

    • Haha probably, but yeah i agree she looks good. at least alright!

  2. Still sounds like a “Battle Royale” spin-off to me.

    • The first book feels very much like a Battle Royale spin-off, but the 2nd and 3rd book are far from it.

They also do a lot more with the arena than in Battle Royale, it’s not something I want to spoil, but they do change things up quite a bit from the Battle Royale stories.

  3. She looks way too old to be playing Katniss.

  4. Tbh I always kind of imagined Katniss to be darker

  5. I hope she will play an action heroine one day or at least have one little fight in a movie. Just let her kick a guy in the groin or something.

  6. Yeah, she still isn’t Katniss.

  7. Sounds like Running Man to me,or so many other that came before !
And not really original …but hey, still can be a good movie !
    Lets see !

    • io,

The book this is based on is good and the story is unique enough.

      • Vic,

Haven’t read the book yet,but sure will check it out !
Always in for a good story,
just so far it sounds so familiar with other
Movies or books over the years !

        Thanks !

        • io,

I found the first book in particular to be quite gripping. It’s different from the two follow ups and better, I think.

  8. yeah its a story we all heard before in Running Man and Battle Royale but like vic said its more unique on its own terms…

as for Jennifer, I think she looks good for Katniss, plus she can act

  9. You know – I actually read the entire series recently and I honestly don’t recall it being mentioned anywhere that she had a dark complexion. Also, I believe she was 15 or 16 at the start of the story, not 14.

    • aint shes described as having long, straight black hair, usually in a braid, gray eyes, and olive skin

    • It said she had dark hair and olive skin

  10. My only problem with this is that she looks to made up. I mean, she doesn’t look gritty and hardened enough. But it’s just a promo pic so I’m not worried.

  11. I read the first hunger games book and thought there was no way to make this a good movie or respectful to the book enough. But this is EXACTLY how i imagened Katniss while reading the book and am pretty excited to see more pics!

  12. My sister read the books and said so far everything is perfect casting wise. I’ll take her word for it

  13. I think Jennifer is looking wonderful here! I was really worried about the casting decision when I first saw pictures of her, but after seeing the photo my fears have definitely been calmed. The picture is incredibly accurate, Jennifer’s altered skin tone, darken hair, and overall appearance is very Katniss. I’m super impressed with this first look and it makes me all the more excited for this film to see release!

  14. She should be the next Lara Croft !

  15. Hmmm. Sounds too much Like Road Warrior/ Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome to me, so I won’t be seeing this. ever.

  16. Tolerable. Mind you, I have yet to read any of the books in this trilogy, but either way she looks like she can pull off the part as defined.

  17. I wish Lawrence could have been in this shape playing Mystique, change her hair and eye color accordingly, and she looks like a young Rebecca Romijn. She looks alittle fluffy in First Class. Definetly sexy here though.

  18. Not, IMO, the best choice ever to play this part, but in this picture she does look good and accurate to the story. I need to watch that movie she was in before I pass judgment on her acting skillz.

  20. The picture is pretty good great actually but her hair needs to be longer and darker, she is certainly fierce looking and definetly someone who has a love (peeta of course)Can’t wait for the movie

  21. Omg love the books

  22. OMFG i have never read a better book once i read hunger games it made me cry and my only idol in life now is Katniss Everdeen.
if i could be anyone i’d be her (or at least just like her)

thank you for the great (and amazing and inspiring) book Suzanne Collins!

  23. i really like the cast choice but i think peeta should have been played by Alex Petteyfer!!!

  24. i feel such a connection to this novel….
