captain america movie cast villain red skull Confirmed: Hugo Weaving Is Captain Americas Red Skull

Although we’ve known for almost two months that Hugo Weaving would be playing the Red Skull in The First Avenger: Captain America, Marvel has confirmed it today with an official announcement.

Weaving was the first actor confirmed in talks with Marvel Studios for a role in the Captain America movie and entered negotiations before the rumor frenzy for the title role hit its peak. Weaving joins Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter and Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes.

Here are the key parts of the press release:

Marvel Studios announced today that Hugo Weaving has been cast to star as Johann Schmidt aka the Red Skull in the studio’s highly anticipated movie CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER opposite Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell.  In the early comics, Johann Schmidt was drafted into loyal service of The Third Reich and renamed “The Red Skull”.  The character will be updated for the feature adaptation.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.

Weaving was last seen in THE WOLFMAN and his voice is very recognizable as Megatron from TRANSFORMERS and TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN as well as Noah the Elder from HAPPY FEET.  His other film credits include starring in V FOR VENDETTA, THE MATRIX franchise, and THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy.

Weaving’s powerful voice and presence on screen, even with his face concealed, makes him a fantastic choice to play the Red Skull opposite the star-spangled Avenger in the Captain America movie.

The press release points out that the character will be updated for the adaptation and I’m curious what differences we’ll witness from the translation from page to film. I’m sure the look of the Red Skull’s actual face won’t be as extreme as we see in the books, but I wonder how they’ll handle the practical effects if they go that route.

Director Joe Johnston, who worked with Weaving previously on The Wolfman, is helming The First Avenger: Captain America off a script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.

What are your thoughts on the cast of Captain America so far?

The First Avenger: Captain America hits July 22, 2011 and The Avengers is scheduled to debut May 4, 2012.

  1. Ok he’s not Sinestro(I actually think Strong was a great pick for that role) but the Red Skull is JUST AS GOOD!! Great news!

  2. Yeah this is good news of course, but I’m still on the fence about this whole movie. Don’t get me wrong Captain America has great potential and I have nothing against the actors or producers. But Joe Johnston, ehh.

  3. That took a while. I guess that 300k Marvel wants to pay everyone wasn’t enough to convince Hugo to jump on board.

  4. I don’t know why but everytime i see him i think “Neo…RUN!!!”. Good thing he’ll be behind a mask in this film lol.

  5. its nice marvel studios has officially confirmed hugo as skull. even though it was pretty much known since hugo name came up. But still great its 100% sure now.

  6. As always, I’m a fan of everything Hugo Weaving does. And I’ve got to admit, every time I run into a friend with the last name of Anderson, I go into my best Hugo impression with “Mr. Anderson” (I admit my impersonation is awful!) But still, one of my favorite movies he ever did is Priscilla, Queen of the Desert! Worth every minute! Back on point…PERFECT casting of Red Skull. I feel a little better about the movie now that it’s “official” Just my two and a half cents.

  7. Very cool. Hugo Weaving is an excellent choice. :-)

  8. Maybe you guys can help me out. I recently read the 30 issue Captain America arc on my Marvel app. It’s the one where…spoiler…Cap dies. The one with the Winter Solider storyline, Civil War near the end, it ends with Sharon shooting Black Widow and Falcon.

Does anyone know what the sequel is to that one? I’m new to comics and this was the first series I read and I don’t know where to go from here to get the direct follow up to the story I read.

    • Mike – I believe it’s called “Captain America: Reborn” (Simple enough, eh?) or something very similar to that. At least that’s where **Spoiler** you find out he wasn’t really dead. Wikipedia has summaries up for the whole thing under Captain America’s biography. They can steer you properly, in order to get the sequencing of events. Enjoy…

  9. “…The character will be updated for the feature adaptation…”

    Wonder what that means…

    • That means they f**k up with everything you know about the character.

  10. totally agree…..the performance in V blew me away

  11. ZOMG MR ANDERSON! good choice imho

  12. If anyone is wondering how the Red Skull might look on-screen, just scroll up and take a look at that picture of Freddy Krueger on the right side of the page…

  13. The only question I got for Red Skull in film is HOW IN THE HELL IS FACE GONNA BE A SKULL!!!!!

Is it gonna be his face? Is it gonna be a mask? Is it gonna be some kind of deformity or what?

  14. Hugo Weaving is a unique actor his role as V was amazing,he did a great job in LOTR and the Matrix. So i know that he will do a fantastic job as the RED SKULL….

  15. Their is so much potential for Mr. Weaving to give us a villain that is capable of generating so much sheer terror as to set a new standard to the term super villain. Move over Darth Sidious, and Vader, Freddie, Jason, Mike Myers, Hannibal Lecter, John Kramer, General Zod, the Joker, Pinhead and all the rest. Make room for the Red Skull! Bet he steals the show from Evans or raises Evans game a dozen points…

  16. I just hope the “updated” bit doesn’t mean that they’re going the Ultimates route, which would frankly suck in my opinion. In the Ultimates version, the Red Skull is Cap’s son. No thanks.

I’m relatively sure they won’t do that though. They probably just mean that the Red Skull’s history will be updated to have it reflect Neo-Nazism instead of him once having been Hitler’s right hand? Or being the descendent of the original Red Skull, a little bit like all the Zemo’s. (Because it would be too weird to have both Captain America and the Red Skull both be relics of WWII.)
