Hugh Jackman Teases ‘Wolverine 3′ Ideas But Isn’t Contracted Yet

In just a few weeks The Wolverine releases on home video, with additional footage from deleted scenes and – from we’ve already seen leaked – a very exciting alternate ending to the film which reveals the classic Wolverine costume from the comics adapted into the live-action film universe. Will we ever see star Hugh Jackman wear it?

Jackman, who’s been reprising the role ever since stepping into the boots of Logan as a last minute replacement for Dougray Scott in Bryan Singer’s original X-Men back in 2000, returns again to his career-defining role next summer in X-Men: Days of Future Past.

After that we know X-Force is one of several projects in early development at Twentieth Century Fox to continue expanding the franchise and we just learned that The Wolverine director James Mangold has been tapped to put together a story for Wolverine 3, which Jackman has since confirmed to true.

In chatting vaguely with EW about the potential for a third solo Wolverine outing, Jackman teased big, exciting ideas revolving what may be a crucial plot point in X-Men: Days of Future Past.

“I was on the phone with Jim Mangold last night. There are some really cool ideas that I’m dying to tell you, but that would be giving away a secret that is not even [fully] formed yet.”

As for his contract and rumors of a potential 4-picture deal in the works, his current obligations end with Days of Future Past next year and he’s adopting a wait-and-see approach to returning again, depending on Fox delivering the right story – at least that’s what he says to the media. Need to maintain a position for negotiations, right? That doesn’t mean he’s not interested – he very much is and this statement echos what he and producer Hutch Parker told us while we visited The Wolverine set last fall. It’s up to the creatives to deliver a story worthy of making and worthy of Jackman working hard on.

“I started with a two-picture deal on the first two [X-Men films], and from that point on, it’s been movie by movie — not just me, but Fox and Jim and everyone. I do want to do it with Jim and with [producer] Lauren Shuler-Donner because we had such a great experience. I’m really proud of The Wolverine.”

While staying in mutant shape to play the frequently shirtless and rugged hero is becoming increasingly challenging and time-consuming for Jackman, he continued, explaining that he loves the character even more now that he’s older.

“I don’t want to dive into another one until we have a compelling reason to do another one. I love the character, he’s kind of like a best friend to me, and I don’t ever want to take [him] or the fans for granted. … I think we’ve got a great opportunity to make something really cool, but it has to be great. That’s what we’re all working toward.”

Of course, if the Aussie actor is to suit up once again as the popular X-Men character, that would mean he’d likely be back for other X-Men properties as well since it’s been proven time and time again that Fox likes having him around in all of their X-Men features. This lends credence to the idea that his Wolverine could be a key member of Jeff Wadlow’s in-development X-Force. There’s also the possibility that Bryan Singer, Matthew Vaughn, Jane Goldman and Simon Kinberg re-team for a third installment in the First Class trilogy – Singer did go on record before shooting Days of Future Past that he had big ideas to blow open the X-Men universe.

And here’s a little related tidbit from Bryan Singer on Twitter about post-production on the biggest X-Men movie to date:

Want to see many more years of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine? Want to see him suit up in the classic yellow costumes, and potentially other X-Men outfits from Marvel Comics? What story from the books would you like to see Wolverine 3 take inspiration from?

  1. If they do another sequel they need to bring in Omega Red as the main threat, and they really need to bring back Sabretoothe and flesh that character out some more. I think by adding one or two other mutant in would be great maybe Archangel, Rogue, Gambit, Beak, Husk, Deadpool, Cable, Forge, and X-23 are the mutants they should choose from. Maybe have It be a military/espionash film and Wolverine helps another team of mutants bring down a evil military group involving Sinister. and maybe Sinister has used Cyclops and Jeans blood to create Cable ( a good way to use this character do to Cyclops death and jean in the past). We could also get a great storyline with Gambit and Rogue as well as Archangel, and Sinister, as well as what the heck ever happened to Sabretoothe. It could explain where characters from Origins went and actually make them better as long as it keeps the tone Bryan Singers brings to the X-men. I know DOFP WILL CHANGE THE TIMELINE AND CORRECT THINGS FROM OTHER FILMS BUT THE WOLVERINE 3 is still part of the original films and origins this would just be a great way to bring in these characters and really make them shine any other characters and it would not make sense.

  2. and please bring in the Costume already it could really work if handled right.

  3. Ok guys what about the film? come on lets all be a bit more mature and not fight amongst ourselves. any ideas for the storyline or characters you would like to see anyone?

      That’d be cool, eh? :P

  4. Never have I ever seen a thread so consumed by the hate for the thirst for “first”.

    *Inserts Nelly’s “Number 1″ hit…record scratch*

Well I’m certainly glad you guys put the fire out. Kinda wish I’d seen it from the beginning. lol

The only first that matters here is the first X-men movie, which generated the amazing movieverse we have today. And the first Wolverine movie, which they learned from and made The Wolverine after. And, First Class, which brought a whole new dimension to the entire series, and an easy way to provide continuation even as the original actors grow older…

So yeah, there’s a lot of places for First. But comments section? Seems to get everyone into Wolverine’s own berserker mode. lol

  5. At this stage of his career, I would rather see Jackman as Doctor Strange.

    • will wolverine at some point be wearing a mask with his costume?

  6. Omega Red please, and I hope they at least show us what happened and bring back these characters Gambit, Rogue, Sabretoothe, and Deadpool they all have strong ties to Wolverine and need more time to shine on screen. Maybe even bring in Cyclops and Archangel.

  7. OK Well here’s the main thing, Wolverine 3 has to be a movie that grosses at least 500 million dollars worldwide and erases everyone’s bad taste of the original Origins movie which in my opinion was only bad because it was confusing. And you don’t ever want another repeat of the confusing parts of Wolverine.

So here’s my take on it, because I know the directors including James Mangold will read these comments here’s my take on how they can fix Wolverine for Bryan Singer – not only fix him, but make Wolverine the iconic hero franchise in the Marvel universe. While raking in over 400 million dollars, as the best movie in the series, so listen closely.

Marvel needs to bring Wolverine back to his roots in Canada where he will face the most cunning villain he’s ever encountered yet, that villain being Omega Red. Omega Red needs to be the main villain and the reasons are three fold:

    1) High grossing film because of Spy on Spy drama that can only happen if Sabretooth and Wolverine do their story arc where they have to face Omega Red.

    2) Canada by default becomes the main back drop, which makes it possible for Mariko to make a cameo though this is not required. Because Wolverine would be back in Canada, Team Alpha Flight flashbacks could be interwoven into both the story and characters.

    3) With Wolverine reprising his secret agent role, we could finally see some back story elements he faced during his time at Alpha Flight. Namely unusual villains like the Wendigo, which nearly killed Wolverine, could be inter-cut into this third film.

Also the final reason why Wolverine 3 needs to be an all out war against Omega Red: It would bring closure to the Silver Fox story line. Because of the Canadian wilderness backdrop, it could reveal how Kayla Silverfox and Logan first met; resolve some unanswered questions and erase the bad taste of Wolverine 1: Origins that everyone had.

Meaning because she is a very good actress, they could do a decent amount of flash backs to properly wrap up the love story between Silver Fox and Wolverine. During the movie, Wolverine could don the yellow and black costume; finally kill Omega Red (which of course, he doesn’t die but we think he does) and wrap up the Sabretooth/Wolverine story arc with a bang. Part of the story could be where while working together with Zero, Wolverine/Sabretooth steal the Carbonadium modifier which sics Omega Red on their butts to begin with and gives it a James Bond noir feel.

Wolvie would also get the costume treatment. So yeah, those are my/our main reasons to say Omega Red has to be the main villain to Wolverine 3 and it should take place during the Alpha Flight years with flash backs. Also it would have the best fight scenes.

  8. They also need to upgrade his abilities, wolverine is faster, stronger and more agile. He is not a regular man that heals with claws. We have still yet to see the real wolverine, not to mention he is also a martial arts master one of the best. His movies should be non stop on the edge action. His speed feats are near spiderman level. Though his agility is not.
