Players can enjoy local multiplayer co-op in the newest platform fighting game, MultiVersus. MultiVersus takes characters from different corners of the Warner Bros. universe and pits them against each other in this newest fighting game to rival the Marvel's Avengers and Nintendo's Smash Bros franchises. Players can choose from older staples like Shaggy or Tom and Jerry, DC superheroes, more modern cartoons like Adventure Time and Steven Universe, and even Game of Thrones' Arya Stark. At launch, players can choose from 16 characters, though there are more characters planned for MultiVersus release in the near future through Founder's Packs downloadables or through the in-game store.
MultiVersus is free-to-play, but will make use of microtransactions. Players looking to unlock new characters, buy extra costumes, emotes, Taunts, or Ring Outs will need to purchase Gleamium from the in-game store. Microtransactions have come under fire recently as some games have been relying on loot boxes and in-game purchases to make money while offering the base game for free. While players can enjoy these free-to-play games, oftentimes it becomes hard to play after a while if players do not spend money to level up their characters, a problem seen in games like Diablo Immortal.
MultiVersus players can fight each other in local multiplayer matches, accessible from the main menu. There are many options for playing the game, from single-player to online PvP, so players need to search through the menu to find the option for local multiplayer matches.
How to Play Local Multiplayer in MultiVersus
While it's not immediately available from the main menu, players can set up a custom match that supports local multiplayer. To access this mode, follow the steps below:
- Click Play on the Main Menu
- Select the Custom Play tab
- Select Local Multiplayer
- Choose a Character, get ready to fight!
Once players set up a local multiplayer match, they can also adjust the settings. To do this, click on Match Settings, and from here players can adjust the number of players, the MultiVersus game mode, the number of Ring Outs needed to win, the time limit, and whether or not to include environmental hazards.
There are currently five maps available to play: the Batcave, the Training level, Finn and Jake's Tree Fort, Scooby's Haunted Mansion, and Trophy's E.D.G.E. MultiVersus will likely roll out additional levels after its official release on July 26th, but for now, players can enjoy local multiplayer matches on any of these five environments.
MultiVersus will release on July 26 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
