Ready for some good news CBS sitcom fans? How I Met Your Mother has been renewed for two more seasons, keeping the show on the air until 2013.

The news comes as the comedy wraps up its sixth season on CBS. The finale for How I Met Your Mother will air two weeks from now on Monday, March 21st.

The news is welcome for the series’ fans, who aren’t as numerous as the ones for Two and a Half Men or The Big Bang Theory, but tend to be much more dedicated (at least in my experience).

In previous years, the show had to wait well into the summer for news of a renewal. Industry speculation is that the deteriorating situation on Two and a Half Men, CBS’s dependable ratings powerhouse, helped speed the decision along this year. Production studio 20th Century Fox TV demanded nearly double their normal rate to continue the series.

While How I Met Your Mother has dipped in the ratings the last few years, the 2010-2011 season has seen a considerable upswing. The show averaged just over 9 million viewers per episode this year. Screen Rant reported in January that former Monday night regular The Big Bang Theory (with an average viewership of 13-14 million) had been renewed for an additional three years. CBS continues to dominate the broadcast sitcom arena – and pretty much all the other arenas too, if you don’t count sports and reality shows.

While the news of Charlie Sheen’s departure from Two and a Half Men can’t be good for CBS and its continued position as “the most watched network in America” – they have plenty of other sitcoms and dramas like the various flavors of CSI and NCIS to keep them on top for several more years. And besides, Neil Patrick Harris manages to be funny and charming without once mentioning tiger blood.

All the leading actors and actresses are slated to return for both upcoming seasons.

  1. SO happy about this news. I’ve been watching this show since the beginning and love it. NPH is the man. Amazing cast, always hilarious. The last new episode I laughed me a$$ off!

  2. I’m a fan of this show, but isn’t this too much? If it was any other sitcom then I’d be happy, but since the writers have repeatedly said that we would not see the Mother until the series finale, this news that the show will go one for two more years makes me feel sorry for Ted, who is probably being set up for two year’s worth of heartbreak.

And really? The season finale of How I Met Your Mother is this month? Wow I was not aware of that.

    • I agree. I love the show but every time there’s a new girl for Ted, it’s a really weird catch-22 where I want to like her but know they’re headed for a train-wreck.

Knowing full well there’s two more seasons adds even more confusion to how they can maintain the emotional impact of his relationships – while keeping the audience excited about how he finally finds.

PS: Whoever it is had better be cast perfectly – otherwise, to borrow from Arrested Development, we’ll all be thinking, “Her?”

    • Agreed. I was annoyed with the previous season for not really giving us much in terms of new information on the mother. This season was a little better for that although it’s still been a lot of teasing without any new information, and seems to be focussing more on Marshall and Lily than Ted (I love Marshall and Lily, but Ted is the protagonist here). But to hear we’ve got another 2 seasons, how much more heartache can Ted take? He’s alredy been left at the alter.

Also, how much longer can those kids sit and listen to their obviously geriatric father ramble on about his single life? It’s being going on 40+ hours now. :p

Still, one of the most smartly written sitcoms on television gets renewed for another 2 seasons, that’s all kinds of awesome.

  3. pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-paa-ra-ra-ra-ra-ra-ra-ra-ra!!

  4. Very very very awesome. Besides SNL its the only television I watch… Reruns of the “twilight zone” on my phone and thats it so this news is very exciting.

  5. Also I heard there were 6 more episodes left to this season so kinda wierd that the finale is in two weeks. Unless their planning on showing all the episodes in these 2 weeks.

  6. Great News!
I wish them much good fortune and success in the years to come.

  7. Agreed as well. Love this show and all the characters, just hope the writers don’t run out of steam as the characters are in a holding pattern waiting for the big day! Robin is hot and always thought she’d be a hard one to trump but the writers have taken her down a notch or two with her neurotic behavior.
By the way, how old will Ted be before he meets the one? Soon he may be too old to even have those kids in the years he’s talking to them.

  8. WICKED NEWS!!! Love love love this show! Every single one of these actors are beyond talented and are hilarious to watch. I laugh soo hard during every episode, the writing is truly genius. I can’t wait to see what the future seasons have in store for one of my fav fav shows. GO FOR BARNEY! Bring on S7 & 8!

  9. Awesome!
