Josh Brolin is talking about the events that led to his being cast as Cable for Deadpool 2 after landing his role as Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Brolin has a lot to look forward to in the comic book movie genre in 2018, starting May 4 when he gets to reveal the Marvel supervillain Thanos in his full glory in Avengers: Infinity War; which will be followed by the actor's hotly anticipated turn as Cable opposite Ryan Reynolds' Merc with a Mouth in Deadpool 2 on June 1.

Brolin, of course, has been a part of the MCU since 2014, when he briefly appeared as Thanos in Guardians of the Galaxy and again in Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015. Given that the events of the films pointed to a much bigger role in Avengers: Infinity War, fans were shocked when Brolin was cast as in the coveted part of Cable in April, especially since his name didn't even surface as a contender for the role (the frontrunners included Michael Shannon, Brad Pitt and Pierce Brosnan).

As it turns out, the opportunity to be in Deadpool 2 came somewhat of a surprise to Brolin, too, who was looking to film George and Tammy – a biopic on country music legends George Jones and Tammy Wynette – when a sudden twist of fate changed his plans completely. In an interview with Collider for his new true-life firefighter drama Only the Brave, Brolin explains what led to his opportunity to play Cable. He says:

Josh Brolin as Cable and Thanos

"We were supposed to start May 8th with [Roger] Deakins shooting and all this kind of stuff, and then it fell through at the last second. And right after it fell through, this Deadpool thing came in and they said, ‘Are you interested in doing this?’ At first I was like, ‘I don’t know. I want to do George and Tammy.’ My wife - thank God - said to just read it, (saying), ‘Why are you even talking? Just read it.’ I was thinking [too big] about the four-picture deal. So, on my phone I remember I read it. It was so reverent and funny and hysterical that once I got through it I was like, ‘That’s it’ and I had no idea [about] the fan-base. I had no idea what it represented, and I think we’ve made something really special."

Brolin's work on Deadpool 2 came on the heels of his work in Avengers: Infinity War, which he no doubt discovered has a massive fan base of its own. Recalling his work on Infinity War, he says:

"I had a really good time. I mean look, I’ve had a blast playing Thanos. I mean, that’s been one of the funnest jobs I’ve ever had."

Lucky for Brolin, he's not only had the rare opportunity to play two roles based on Marvel Comic Book legends almost simultaneously, he's doing so for competing studios since Deadpool 2 is the property of 20th Century Fox, and Avengers: Infinity War is being made by Disney/Marvel Studios. Thankfully, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige is supportive of Brolin, and assured after his Cable casting that he was OK with the move because Cable and Thanos are "two very different characters."

As high profile as Brolin's career is at the moment, the odds are probably in his favor that George and Tammy will still get produced. Playing the role of George Jones opposite Jessica Chastain as Tammy Wynette, the film, if it proceeds, has Ray Oscar nominated helmer Taylor Hackford attached to direct. If not, he always has his reprise of Thanos in Avengers 4 and more Cable to look forward to.
