This is not a knock on you at all but just an attempt to answer the question to this perceived plot hole that the “Should Have Ended” video takes shots at.

First off let me say that I did enjoy the film but for some strange reason have not tried to see it again which is odd for me as I enjoy watching films like this more than once. I also believe it is not the best film ever made and i believe that the titel of best ever made is too person specific for any one movie to ever come close.

Q1: So why did Jake Sully not tell the Navi about the quest for unobtanium and thereby allow many on both sides to die?

1) As others have said, in the beginning Jake was trying to win over the Navi and gain their trust so he could access their ways & customs and provide intell to Colonel Quaritch.

2) By the time Jake switched sides and decided he should help the Navi defend themselves, revealing to them the reason for the ‘sky people’ coming to their planet/world would be pointless. The Navi believed that all life on the planet including the vegetation (that includes tress) was connected and part of a greater one; in essence their version of the Christian God. The sky people (that’s us) would need to tear up the Navis most sacred place, that big ole tree, to get to the largest source of unobtanium on the planet.

Even if Jake had told the Navi why the sky people were cutting down trees it would not have done anything to change the Navi’s stance. They aren’t like the native American Indians would could be conned into giving up some land for trinkets or anything else. These trees were a part of their sacred greater being, there is nothing Jake or anyone else could have said or done that would have gotten the Navi to step back and so “Sure you can cut down our most holy of places’.

Q2: So why then did the sky people bother with the Avatar program if there was no way the Navi would allow the sky people to get to the unobtanium?

This is easy, we the sky people had no clue, at least at first, how important everything was to the Navi. We assumed it was just a matter of find out out what they could be bribed with but you can’t bride a holy person into giving over that which is most holy to them and that’s where the sky people made their mistake.

Q3: Why then didn’t the humans (the sky people) just blow everything up to begin with?

For the same reason that even our own war hungry leaders don’t rush into any place they like and just Nuke everyone & everything; image. No matter how far away they were from Earth, you can bet that if that corporation who was contracted to go and get the unobtanium had just come in blasting without trying any diplomatic solution first, would get some much heat back on Earth for it that they’d never recover from the losses and so enter Dr Grace Augistine and her Avatar solution. It makes the company look good back home and it also comes with the chance for making money off the technology achievements they make in the Avatar program.

I hope that clarifies some questions about Jakes lack of unobtanium discussions with the Navi in the movie as well as a few other related questions. I really don’t believe this story is as full of loopholes as many have claimed so much as its not as in your face with the answers to those perceived loopholes.

This would however, require that neither one side nor the other be portrayed as generally more pure or necessarily more desirable than the other.

If they were going to take it anyway, why bother trying to use Avatars to negotiate for it? I mean, really, if you've got it in your head that you're prepared to kill innocents to get what you want, why go along with the avatar idea in the first place?

i think the unobtanium is under the big tree. the humans will still destroy the navi's home. they will still have a big battle.

I would also like to note that the Na'vi and avatar bodies, faces, and facial expressions were all done by motion capture, so the actors and actresses are still definitely 'acting' in the traditional sense; it isn't an animation projecting what their expressions and body language might look like; the actors and actresses are still doing almost all of the work.

Actually, I'd say it's the Avatar FANS who are bored with life. So much so that they are contemplating suicide in hopes that they'll be reincarnated on Pandora. Just read this article:

You really should calm down, pal. Just because not everyone loved the movie as much as you did does not mean they are stupid. I'm sure you hate plenty of movies that other people like. And as for your claim of there being no flawless movies, I'm inclined to disagree. A number of films (such as Casablanca, Dr. Strangelove, Patton, Pulp Fiction, Die Hard, and even James Cameron's own Aliens) are flawless films in my opinion. Perfectly written and made, with not a flaw to be found.

You apparently love the film so much that you get angry when people point out plot holes. Not a good sign. And I would say this film is far from the greatest movie ever. Sure, it has special effects up there with T2 and Jurassic Park, but a story on the same level as, say, Armageddon. I would say NO ONE missed the point of this film, considering Cameron was hammering it into the audience's head with all the subtlety of a hydrogen bomb. And you wonder why some people didn't like this movie?

Anyway, get used to people disagreeing with you if you keep up this attitude. Also, it'd be good to work on your grammar and syntax. Later.

How about critical ones? I was apparently under the mistaken impression that one of the more important jobs of a story is not to completely leave out important information. And a story does not have to be utterly explicit in exposing information. Lots of films, really good ones for that matter, use subtle hints or well-written and conversational dialog to accomplish this, just enough to guide the minds of the audience without being so insulting as to write lines that directly and boringly lay out plot points. However, when there is not even a suggestion that such a plot point took place off screen, then it's just lazy screenwritng.

With the video and whether Jake told them, I know some folks are reading into it and saying “well, they must have told them at some point but it wasn't in the movie,” but, if it's not in the movie, it wouldn't have been said. That's not something that would have happened in the background and none of the Navi would have said anything about it. They'd likely bring up about why the humans want to destroy their home, but that was never brought up.

It's a plot hole. It happens, but it didn't greatly impact the entertainment value of the film.
