After 8 years on the air, the time has finally come for Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital to close its doors for good, as House creator David Shore, producer Katie Jacobs, and star Hugh Laurie jointly announced that Fox’s ground-breaking medical drama will come to an end after this season.

But fear not, as executive producer Greg Yaitanes revealed via Twitter that an “amazing series finale” (written and directed by Shore) is awaiting fans when the series takes its final bow on May 21st.

Releasing a statement that certainly acknowledges the love that everyone at House has for their fans, Shore, Jacobs, and Laurie further explain their decision to finally bring House to a close:

After much deliberation, the producers of House M.D. have decided that this season of the show, the 8th, should be the last.  By April this year they will have completed 177 episodes, which is about 175 more than anyone expected back in 2004.

The decision to end the show now, or ever, is a painful one, as it risks putting asunder hundreds of close friendships that have developed over the last eight years – but also because the show itself has been a source of great pride to everyone involved…

Since it began, House has aspired to offer a coherent and satisfying world in which everlasting human questions of ethics and emotion, logic and truth, could be examined, played out, and occasionally answered.  This sounds like fancy talk, but it really isn’t. House has, in its time, intrigued audiences around the world in vast numbers, and has shown that there is a strong appetite for television drama that relies on more than prettiness or gun play.

But now that time is drawing to a close.  The producers have always imagined House as an enigmatic creature;  he should never be the last one to leave the party.  How much better to disappear before the music stops, while there is still some promise and mystique in the air.

The producers can never sufficiently express their gratitude to the hundreds of dedicated artists and technicians who have given so generously of their energy and talent to make House the show it has been — and perhaps will continue to be for some time, on one cable network or another.

The makers of House would also like to thank Fox Broadcasting and Universal Television for supporting the show with patience, imagination and large quantities of good taste.  The Studio-As-Evil-Adversary is one of the many clichés that House has managed to avoid, and for that the cast and crew are deeply grateful.

Lastly, the audience:  some have come and some have gone, obviously.  This is to be expected in the life of any show.  But over the course of the last eight years, the producers of House have felt immensely honored to be the subject of such close attention by an intelligent, discriminating, humane and thoughtful — not to mention numerous — audience.  Even the show’s detractors have been flattering in their way.  Making the show has felt like a lively and passionate discussion about as many different subjects as could possibly be raised in 177 hours.  The devotion and generosity of our viewers has been marvelous to behold.

So, finally, everyone at House will bid farewell to the audience and to each other with more than a few tears, but also with a deep feeling of gratitude for the grand adventure they have been privileged to enjoy for the last eight years.  If the show lives on somewhere, with somebody, as a fond memory, then that is a precious feat, of which we will always be proud.

Everybody Lies.

While certainly sad for everyone who has watched House over the years, the announcement of the series coming to an end isn’t surprising. Even though ratings have slipped in recent seasons, it was the overall lack of focus and direction that was worrying to longtime viewers.

Despite House presenting one the most brilliant handlings of character coupling in television history during the season 7 premiere, the rest of the season played out like a film school experiment, where abstract storytelling and unique visuals took the series away from its strength of grounding its characters and relationships in a world filled with mystery and intrigue.

And while many fans may have given up on the series at some point, anyone who has ever enjoyed an episode of House should absolutely tune in to the series finale. Why? Because there’s an end in sight.

For any television series, there comes a time when continuously writing progressing storylines becomes difficult. When there’s no end to a series in sight, you’re not building towards anything, just merely attempting to create new levels of evolution – which, for all intents and purposes, can be difficult for the writers if they’re not even sure where the evolution is supposed to lead.

Even a series such as Lost felt the strain of continuing a story with no end in sight. During season 3 of the series, which saw the majority of the characters imprisoned by “The Others” for many episodes, series creator Damon Lindelof admitted that he put everyone in that situation simply because the characters had nowhere to go – not until ABC would agree to an end to the series.

And now, just like everyone’s favorite “Losties,” Dr. Gregory House has a place to go, and an end to work towards.

The only thing fans can now hope for is for Lisa Edelstein to return for the House series finale – because that would certainly make it “amazing.”

  1. at least the series gets an ending

  2. The malady for the last episode…. ‘Lupus’!

Thank you to all at ‘House’. It’s be a great ride! ~ Stark

  3. Excellent Anthony, as always!

  4. The last episode should finally resolve the chronic leg pain affects Dr. House. The solution should be that the accident that affected his leg resulted in a death directly or because he was out of commission and could not be there to diagnose the cure. Just a suggestion.

Bring back the REAL unanswered question to the series … the one who started the vortex that completely engulfed House: Stacey Warner.

Oh. And NO MORE CUDDY. Unless it’s to save her dying child of an incurable condition. I’d be cool with that.

    But seriously. No more Cuddy.

I thought with the return of Bryan Singer the recent episodes were looking bettrt and they were good for atleast another season.

    Lastly, NO Cuddy

  7. House contracts Erdheim Chester’s disease, doesn’t diagnose it and it ends up killing him – the irony of it!

    • thks! u ruined it!

  8. The above would be my recommendation to the writers for the last episode. Also, it’d be great to include House’s real dad and perhaps the introduction of an even more brilliant step-brother (akin to a Mycroft to House’s Holmes) somewhere in such a story. Damn! I’m so disappointed House is ending!

  9. House.. such an ass and such a genius. I hate the asian chick… Camron and Chase need to get married, and House needs to OD on vicoden … its up to the writers to make it epppic!!!1

    • Cameron character was ill-conceived and not well played. The most awkward character.

  10. A gifted man is a good replacement for house still in the infancy stages but a good upcoming series needing an audience to know it is showing it presently has about 15 shows for a season 1 so far but it keeps you thinking and interested i leave the rest for you to decide i give up a thumbs up :)

  11. Noooo don’t take away the series HOUSE! Hopefully this turns out like every other show that says their leaving but retur
ns. I love house and all the characters in it. It’s my FAVORITE TV show. O and. please don’t take away any characters, the show isn’t the show with any missing characters.

  12. As much as I do not want ‘House’ to go off the air, I believe it is better than having the fans get tired of the show and demand the Studio cancel the show. In the end, this will leave the fans of House wanting more. These fans will continue to watch the show in repeats. Thanks for the eight seasons.

  13. I want to see closure for house whether that’s death, but I think that all cast should come back that can including Lisa edelstein and Jennifer Morrison.

  14. You know it’s really sad to hear about House ending, even Breaking Bad. I want a finale where Jennifer Morrison, Cuddy, House’s shooter, Thirteen all return for something big where it leads to House’s leg. I wish there was an episode where Walt Whitman’s Cancer is treated by house. That would be epic. I want the finale to be at least a worthy 2 hours.

  15. I didn’t like house at first but now I love it ben watching on dvd from library

  16. Thirteen will return with her huntington’s in full force. She will ask House to euthanize her, as he promised in season 7 when she confessed to euthanizing her brother. Episode will be about trying to cure her/ethical practice of euthanasia.

    • i hope that does happen because so far they havent dropped any hints on her returning.

  17. Please, please, do not end House! It is a wonderful series and I cannot bear to see Hugh Laurie stop acting House.

  18. How will it end? A patient will finally have sarcoidosis.

    • On wikipedia, I looked at Olivia Wilde’s status and it says: Season 8: Episode 3, Recurring Episode 22. She will be back

    • lol, i thought i was the only one that noticed sarcoidosis mentioned in every episode

  19. Got some good news: Kal Penn will return for the Season Finale. His fake suicide will be explained. Martha Masters will also return. No Cuddy, thank goodness. It is unknown if Cameron will return.

  20. Goodbye Hugh Laurie.I look forward to seeing you in something else. At least I hope so.You will be missed…but I bet your family will be glad to have you back !!!

  21. Omg I don’t want it to end… I have watched it from the beginning… I did start getting tired of it but this season has been the best ever!!! Chase and Park 4ever!!!

  22. They should have house find a cure for idiocy.
And the last line should be “everybody lies”.

  23. Have loved this show for so long, each season so different and such great writers. Loved Park and Chase in the elevator at the end of one of the last shows. I hope some how we will be able to follow these cast members going forward in a new show and House can be a guest actor from time to time.

  24. I drifted from the show for a few seasons but I love this last season and will miss the show.

  25. I’ve always loved House since I began watching quite a while back. Recently though, personally, I think it has become a tad dry but there’s something about it that always sucks me back in. It truly has been an amazing show and a great job and a personal thanks to all those, from the director to the fans and everybody in between, who has made this series a possibility. Can’t wait to see the final episode. Time to say the final farewell to House.

  26. LOL- I love that other people noticed the sarcoidosis thing. My husband actually has sarcoidosis, and I think the reason they mention it so much is because it is extremely difficult to diagnose. I’m sooo sad to see House end :(

  27. It has been quite a journey. I started watching house from Season 2 and it actually motivated me to take Medicine as my career. So, in a way, House shaped my life as it is today. Thank you to all the producers for the wonderful experience.

    Long live House!!!
Btw – Cameron will be back for the finale… Cool!!!

  28. Please don’t end the she, if M.A.S.H. Can go 11 years so can House.

  29. Since House is based on Sherlock Holmes (Wilson is Watson), let’s look at how Holmes “died”. Holmes faked his death after fighting his arch nemesis Moriarty at Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland, living on under the alias of Sigerson in order to protect Watson from assassins.

Perhaps House will take an alias and go on the lam with Wilson until Wilson’s death, merely disappearing afterwards. This would leave things open for a movie sequel.

    • Yes! Great idea. I would love to see a sequel (but the House crew must not destroy the brand in the ending).
