House of Cards House of Cards Already Renewed for Season 3

In the age of new media, Netflix has proven time and again that it is willing to take risks. In the past couple of years, the DVD rental and streaming service has made headlines by venturing into original programming with shows like Lilyhammer and Orange Is the New Black and its multi-series deal with Marvel Studios. However, perhaps the series that truly established Netflix as a bonafide destination for high-caliber entertainment is House of Cards.

The Emmy-winning drama series – which stars two-time Oscar winner Kevin Spacey as a vengeful U.S. Representative and Robin Wright as his wife – was the first original Netflix production to feature such celebrated talent both on-camera and behind it (director David Fincher serves as an executive producer). Moreover, House of Cards (along with Netflix’s resurrection of fan favorite comedy Arrested Development) was instrumental in building buzz for Netflix originals, and now comes news that should please the show’s growing fanbase.

Netflix has announced that House of Cards is renewed for season 3, despite the fact that the second season has yet to premiere online. While not confirmed, it’s expected that season 3 will consist of a total of 13 episodes, as was the case with the show’s first two seasons. Production on season 3 is set to commence soon, though the report did not mention an anticipated airdate.

The early renewal is just the latest indication that Netflix truly values House of Cards and the notoriety the series has brought to the company. The show recently received online-only commentary tracks featuring the directors of each episode – a move no doubt aimed at reinvigorating viewership ahead of the next season’s premiere – and has proven to be one of the most talked-about series streaming on Netflix.

However, because of the way Netflix does business, there’s no concrete data to illustrate exactly how popular House of Cards is. While frustrating for those of us who report on these shows and their ratings performance, the fact that the streaming service keeps coming back for more House of Cards speaks volumes about the results and their long-term faith in the series.

Are you looking forward to more seasons of Spacey and Wright on House of Cards, or is there another Netflix original show that you’re more excited about? Sound off in the comments section below.

As mentioned above, House of Cards season 2 will premiere on Netflix in its entirety on Friday, February 14, 2014.

“Bad is the world, and all will come to naught
when such ill-dealing must be seen in thought.”
    ― William Shakespeare, Richard III

  3. Awesome. Can’t wait for season 2. This is interesting also because I had read that the producers and writers had planned out a two-season arc, and also a 5-season arc I think, but weren’t sure they would be able to get past season 2 because they weren’t sure they could get Spacey and Wright back.

So maybe this means even more seasons?

  4. Looking to forward to the third season. As for “the first original Netflix production” this was based on a UK show that most this side of the pond never saw.

  5. Just finished binging watching last night. FANTASTIC!!!!! I am glad that the reviewer of this drama disected the whole 2nd season. It was an excellent review and clarified some points that I missed. Can’t wait for season 3. As I was watching I try to keep tabs on the different nuances between characters and see how the plotting and development might be resolved. It is a thinking persons show.

  6. I just finished season 2 and can not wait for season 3 this show is the best show not in tv.

  7. Purchased a new Blu-Ray and subscribed to Netflix only to watch this show. Just completed a marathon over the Labor Day weekend and was mesmerized. Terrific show. Can’t wait for Season 3. My husband and I enjoyed it and my sister and daughters are watching too. It is addicting.

  8. It’s all been said – due to a free Netflix offer and my 27 inch PC monitor with a great sound system (it’s aging) I binge watched HOC.
How many picked up on Frances’ cufflinks? Finishing season #2 and will join Amazon or Netflix because I now will need MY FIX of this intelligent and thought provoking series. I was lied about during the nomination of a Washington DC person. I was flabbergasted about it. Now I am no longer surprised –

  9. Great story line & acting. Spacey has always been amazing, but really shines in this. Wrigt and co-stars terrific as well. Netflix is providing top notch entertainment and deserves to get its kudo’s.

  10. Can’t wait for season 3.

  11. I am looking forward to another season of House of cards. Me and my friends love this series.
