  1. Moral of the story is, never catch a ride with a stranger when its raining…oh and always listen to your mother.

  2. And get over the tree, it’s not important. Was there a face, wasn’t there a face… Its not important. Elissa did really see a face, she was the one who said it first. Her looking at it in the end was most likely her being bummed out that she was wrong about Ryan. I’m sure you could read far too deeply into this and write a nice long paper about just what it “means” in life, but it is not essential to the plot of the movie.

    • the face was in the crack of the tree….wasnt hard to miss….

    • Ok just watched the movie and like all of you I was intrig by they face in the tree… Well here is my thought about it… Remember how Ryan wanted to become a psychologes? Well you see crazy people often see things that aren’t really there! Elissa just said she saw a face to make Ryan feel good(she is always trying to fix people) … Sooo at the end Elissa ask her mom what she sees her moms say a tree and then Elissa said nothing!!! Because she didn’t see anything in the first place!

    • The only significance it has to me is that it is showing “the hidden” things about people. Ryan mentions this and also Elise’s mother say she elsise looks for that in people. The mom doesnt see it in the end cuz shes not looking for it. But elise was cuz she wanted to believe ryan was good. But its not a key point to the plot

  3. where is the face?? 0.o

    • The tree and the apparent face were a way of showing how manipulative Ryan was with girls. He was able to trick her into thinking there was a face and resulted in her being insanely fascinated by it, which reflects his personality.

  4. I read all of the 251 comments here and I finally understood this movie. I watched it for the first time last night; it was really good, but if only the writers had given us more clues, so we could understand the whole plot, it could have been more enjoyable.
    Good movie, anyway. 7/10 :T

  5. Maby the tampons and blue star test were thing the coffee shop girl had in her purse when he kidnaped her. Like her wallet that was also in the trash.

    • No ryan had to buy those for the girls he was keeping locked in his basement. Since he was replacing CA, CA had blue eyes… member

  6. i get that CA had blue eyes like when she picked up the photo frame Jennifer Laurence commented that she had really blue eyes. but when she is at the sink after being attacked by CA#2, the contact she finds on her arm is BROWN! the packet was for BLUE contacts and the diner girl had brown eyes, one was blue from the contact so shouldnt it have been a blue contact on her arm?? thanks everyone for clearing up the other stuff, still didnt see the stuff in the tree though.

    • The contact was actually blue not brown. It just looked brown because of her arm

    • Omg i just relized . So ryans sister actually did die and then ryan kidnapped the girl at the diner because he needed someone to claim as carrie ann because he didnt want to face the reality of losing his little sister . Then he tried to make her more of a carrie ann look alike so he bought the blue contacts . And the tampons because of course the diner girl was of age to have her period . When the daughter went to the home she found those stuff and lead herself to the hiding place for “carrie ann” where she was attacked by the diner girl who was probably more over joyed to see someone than scared but ryan made it seem like she “carrie ann” was scared . While the daughter was being attacked the contact fell onto her arm . It was blue . I understand now . But can someone clarify why it got all wierd at the end and he got that flash back and was saying “iyour name is carrie ann” confused about that part !! Help ?

      • The parents refused to believe Carrie Ann died so they forced him to act like a girl (Carrie Ann)

      • I think that when Ryan accidentally killed his sister, the parents were upset and “punished” him by making him be like Carrie Ann. That’s why they had that shady guy with the shovel bury the body of the real Carrie Ann. So he “ended the punishment” like he said before by killing them himself. Then he had to find girls to take the place of his sister, making her look insane, but really all the girls were trying to escape. That’s why they always tried to make a run for it, and the one stabbed herself by the car where the couples made out. I think Ryan kidnapped these girls so he could live his own life, what he was deprived of growing up.

      • That was his “punishment”. His parents made him dress up and act like Carrie-Ann because they were crazy and missed her and blamed it on him. When he said that’s not his name she slapped him because she wanted him to be her.

  7. I FINALLY watched this movie a few days ago. I just watched it because I wanted to, not for the actors or anything else. Alright, so THE WHOLE TIME, as soon as I saw Ryan, I was trying to figure out who he was and what I knew him from… He’s pretty cute. (:
Usually in movies I’ll be like “well, they’re gonna get married” or “she’ll die first”. Y’know just kind of find out what will happen before it happens. I didn’t do that at all this movie because like I said, I was trying to figure out where he was from. Pretty much everything I was told, I believed. The girl had brain damage? When she was knocking the key down from the door, I was like “no, no way. She’s too smart. How could she have brain damage? RIGGED!” But still I believed it. When they showed that Ryan had bought colored contacts for the girl, I was like “I knew those blue eyes looked fake… But if she couldn’t see, why not just get her normal contacts?” Every time that “Carrie Ann” attacked Ryan, and he asked her why she did it, I never put two and two together. I just figured it was because she had brain damage, not because he trapped he there.
I’m embarrassed to say I missed EVERY. SINGLE. OBVIOUS. CLUE. But I’m kind of glad, because I actually really liked the movie, and all the “professional” reviews are saying how much it sucked. I loved it.
Oh yeah, and after searching up pictures of him on google, I found one of him from a few years back and I just thought “I know him I know him I know him… SethSethSethSethSethSeth” searched it, and sure enough, he was Seth from The Pacifier. And he was also on Catch That Kid. xD

  8. So what exactly was the police officer’s role in it? He always knew that Carrie-Anne had died, but if they explained why I seem to have missed it. The father tells Bill he has to go along with it and Jacob says he did it to protect himself, so presumably he’s in the wrong somehow. Did he actually kill Carrie-Anne? Initially I assumed he had been sexually abusing her

    • Haaha same here i was like i know hes from somewhere i think haaha did u rver watch hannah monatana as a kid and she dates that famous guy? I think hes from hannah montana :P

      • no that is not the guy from Hannah Montana haha, the guy from Hannah Montana was cody Linley not max theriot, but I can see how you thought that(:

      • If you’ve ever seen The Pacifier, he is the older brother who dies his hair and joins the musical. That’s one place I can think of where he is from.

  9. Hit post by accident.
… and that would be revealed at the end but it was just left. Given the cop overlooked a dead child, years of child abuse and that child then killing, the explanation for why he did it seems like a pretty big plot point to not mention.

  10. i just don`t get it about that police officer and his relation to ryan and CA !!

  11. I get the movie, except one thing. Why does he need Carrie-Ann? Is it because he needs her so he can be Ryan, and not Carrie-Ann? That’s what I think, but I’m just confused!

    • He needed Carrie Anne so he could stop blaming himself for her death. He felt like he never killed Carrie Anne if their was a Carrie Anne to replace the one that died.

      • I do not agree. As his parents wanted him to be Carrie Ann after the death of theor child and beat it into him, he felt he couldnt exist unless carrie ann existed which is why he needed her because part him thought he was her.

  12. I get the movie, except one thing. Why does he need Carrie-Ann? Is it because he needs her so he can be Ryan, and not Carrie-Ann? That’s what I think, but I’m just confused.

  15. I was reccomended to watch this film with by my friends, they kept saying that i would never work it out so i took in every deatail. Just at the bit whereshe sings the song in front of the band she joins i got it the words say it. If you dont believe me go check, also people are saying the bit with the tree does not matter i disagree i thinkit shows that she is like him they notice little things and his pearents thought he was CA so it shows shee is like the orginal CA

  16. I’m sorry but did half of you even watch the movie? All these questions asking things like, why the girl tried to kill the neighbour, why did Ryan kidnap the girls, who killed the parents and who was Carrie Ann. I’m sorry but if you payed any attention to the movie and watched it properly, you could EASILY be able to tell these things. It’s not rocket science. I wouldn’t care if you had actually watched and struggled with few things and were asking, but things like that are pretty much hand fed to you by the end kept being asked again and again. Honestly. x

    • Well aren’t you just Jesus incarnate. It’s a comment section to discuss spoilers and things you didn’t understand, if it bothers you that people can’t understand what you so simply could comprehend don’t look at the comments, since they are in fact ,for the purpose that agitates you.

      • Amen sister.

    • amen. that is exactly right haha

  17. Okaaay! Everything makes sense to me apart from this.. Everyone is saying Ryan killed his parents, but at the beginning it showed a girl killing them???????? I thought that the cop stuck up for Ryan, sent him away somewhere and the parents got a girl drugged her and made her the new CA, and she killed them??? That’s the only conclusion I can think of! Unless your saying they made Ryan grow his hair and wear a nighty which just doesn’t make sense to me tbh.. Explain someoneeeee :(! This movies been frying my brain!

    • As it showed at the end of the film, the girl actually died long before the parents. As a punishment they forced Ryan to dress up like his dead sister and insisted on calling him Carrie Anne etc. If you watch the scene again, you never get a proper look at CA’s face during the murder. That’s because it’s actually Ryan, CA is dead. The punishment messes him up in the head and eventually he kills them and starts living as a boy again, kidnapping girls to use as new Carrie Anne’s.

  19. Is it possible that the aunt was the first Carrie Ann ? Somewhere in the movie stated that she stayed In the house and died of a stroke I believe ?( not sure) but just a theory .

  20. Is it possible that the aunt was the first Carrie Ann ? Somewhere in the movie stated that she stayed In the house and died of a stroke I believe ?( not sure) but just a theory.

  21. Just watched the DVD(“uncut version”). As we were watching, we were thinking about how it’d end because we recognized the actor as being the one in Bates Motel. Indeed, the movie had similarities to Psycho. Anyway, as to the face on the tree, we did see what looked like a face to the right of the crack–a face that, to an extent, recalls the painting The Scream. Cannot help but think that Carrie Ann was buried where the tree is now.

  22. The movie isn’t hard to understand. Ryan accidentally killed his sister, making his parents make him be a girl. The room of “Carrie-Ann” was left untouched because that’s how it was when she died. When Ryan was older he killed his parents and then went back to being Ryan instead of his sister which they made him do. Ryan kept kidnapping girls that looked like his sister and if they didnt he’d make them look like her. After he accidentally kills the first girl seen in the movie, he meets the diner girl who he then takes and makes her wear the blue contacts. After Elissa sees the diner girl, he then killed the diner girl prob and then he was going to use Elissa as his new Carrie-Ann. And the tree didnt have a face he was manipulating girls into seeing it that’s why at the end she cried cause she knew it wasn’t there and that it was a lie too.

    • @cassssie you almost got everything right….you see Ryan wasn’t trying to manipulate anybody… He was just crazy period(crazy people often see things that aren’t really there(psychology) ) just like the mom…. Elissa just said she saw a face to make Ryan feel good… That’s why at the end when she ask her mom what she sees and the mom said a tree Elissa said nothing.

      • See that’s the thing though. Elissa had no idea what Ryan was showing her. All Ryan did was move her head to a different angle and she said she saw a face. He never said anything until afterwards. So she couldn’t have said it just to make him feel better.

    • So eventually Ryan was planning on using Elissa as the next CA? See that makes sense because when ryan and Elissa were in the basement and ryan was trying to look for Elissa, he says “I want you, but I need Carrie-Ann.” Gotcha!

  23. Okay. You have all obviously let it go, BUT WHERE IS THE FACE IN THE TREE. Please for the love of god.

    • There wasn’t ever a face. He told her that it was there and she agreed with him when she knew that it wasn’t, and that shows how manipulative he was.

  24. Ok so why did Carrie Ann attack people and why did the first one bring a knife with her when she was going to attack the couple in that car? And why did she want to attack Elissa? Was she just crazy because Ryan was keeping her captive or what?

  25. So he needed carrie anne to be himself because, when she died they pretended he was her, so he like needed her to be himself because without her he wouldn’t be himself is that right? I am kinda confused on this..

  26. Wow these did u guys fall asleep during this movie? Worst questions ever. Every single single detail is explained during film.

  27. It’s like does anybody pay attention anymore. we learned that he had the girl from diner when we saw the Penn state sweatshirt not the contacts. His parents dressed him up as CA to punish him and suppress their agony. The only thing in this film that was even remotley confusing was whether or not it was Ryans first victim that killed the parents or Ryan himself. It was Ryan because the mother would have noticed the difference between ryan and a captive girl. She says “CA get back to bed”. not likely ryan could have kept a girl hidden at that age with his parents in house…THE KILLER WAS RYAN….lol

  28. its all about suppressing trauma.

  29. Michaela CA never attacked anyone, she was trying to escape thats why she was running towards elissas house, she was trying to get help. Ryan ran after her everytime to keep her from escaping. He need to have a false CA to replace the one he belived he killed (which really wasnt his fault, he was a child) AND he need a false CA to reclaim his identity as Ryan after being abused by his parents who made him dress like a girl and believe after years of torment that he was indeed Carrie Anne.

    • True. Good review. Sort of ruined by juvenile insults of other viewers, but good summary.
