Could Robert Sean Leonard Be Leaving ‘House’?

Robert Sean Leonard on House Could Robert Sean Leonard Be Leaving House?

As if there weren’t enough questions surrounding FOX’s hit medical drama House already, one of the show’s stars, Robert Sean Leonard, has recently announced he will be taking a lead role on Broadway in just a few short weeks. It is also worth mentioning the final episodes of the show’s seventh season begin filming around that time, too.

That’s right; House’s very own Dr. James Wilson will be heading up the revival of Born Yesterday. For those of you unfamiliar with the Garson Kanin play, it concerns one Paul Verrall, a journalist who has undertaken the education of showgirl Bille Dawn, at the request of her powerful significant other, Harry Brock. Leonard is set to play Verrall, and will be joined onstage by Jim Belushi and Nina Arianda—I’ll leave it to you to figure out their respective roles.

Previews for Born Yesterday begin March 31, and the show officially opens on April 24. Naturally, this news has many wondering if we’ve seen the last of Leonard on this season of House. Surprisingly, FOX claims pulling double duty will have little effect on the show in regards to Leonard’s role; at worst, the actor may be out of a few episodes in the Fall.

That silver lining will only exist if Leonard even returns next season. Because FOX is at odds with NBC Universal over who will be footing the bill on the eighth season of House, no one in the cast – with the exception of Hugh Laurie – has committed to reprising their roles. Since the word “optimistic” is poised on the lips of everyone involved with the show from producers to cast, this wallet-opening stalemate doesn’t look like it will last much longer. Nonetheless, the turbulent situation could leave Leonard perfectly poised to say goodbye, should this new commitment prove lengthier and more time-consuming than anyone first realized.

Then again, as evidence by the highly-anticipated return of Olivia Wilde, the House casting door seems to swing both ways with stunning regularity, so it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to see accommodations being made to suit Leonard, should he decide to stay on. In the event Leonard does turn his back on the role, or see his episode count greatly diminished due to his extra-curricular activities, what would the impact be for the show? House has been on long enough to have seen its fair share of cast memebers depart with nary a hiccup in ratings, but none have had the importance of Leonard’s character. Would a Dr. Wilson-less House be any less of a success?

House airs Monday @8pm, on FOX

  1. If he is filming House and doing a Broadway play at the sometime, then all this time he has been lying about been lazy!!!. I’m glad he isn’t leaving before the end of this season, because he is one of the 3 reasons House is such a success worldwide. The other 2 are LE and HL

  2. Can’t wait to see Belushi as a troubled showgirl. It’s really out of his usual range!

    • LoL!!

  3. As amazing as it may seem to most fans of Hugh Laurie, not all of us tune in to watch him. He will always be Bertie Wooster to me. I watch for Wilson, and enjoy how Wilson brings out the best in House. I won’t watch without RSL’s Wilson.

  4. I wouldn’t blame Leonard for leaving the show at all. It has disintegrated in quality at warp speed this season (last season had its ups and downs, mostly downs). Since House and Wilson were originally based on Holmes and Watson…well, I don’t see the housekeeper, Mrs. Whatshername, could pick up the slack. And by that I don’t mean Lisa Edelstein, who is also essential. Just overworking the metaphor.

Jim Belushi looks really sex in drag, BTW. Great legs. LOL.

  5. He’s the only reason I still watch House. The character of House would be nothing without Wilson. If he goes, i go

  6. Wilson is Watson to House’s Holmes. Without Wilson, House would not be as interesting as a character or as a show.

  7. Wilson is the only character House can’t do without. Yes, even Cuddy is expendable. The House/Wilson relationship has always been the centre of the show, and the day that ceases to be true is the day House has to end. Hugh Laurie said as much himself. You can’t have Holmes without Watson.

  8. The more I think about it the more happy I am that RSL has landed the lead role in Born Yesterday. I hope he gets great reviews. He is a talented actor and its what he loves to do.
He is terrible underused in this Season of Huddy md. This is a shame. I allways found the House/wilson friendship as one of the best and most interesting things on House. I hope they don`t fire RSL. I really would miss Wilson.
Like others said you can`t have Holmes without Watson.

  9. Wilson is one of my favorite characters. I would honestly be crushed if he left; he is an integral part of the show and in House’s life. Just as many people have said, you cannot have Holmes without Watson, or House without Wilson. House continuously turns to Wilson for advice, trusts him, and cares for him deeply. When Wilson left at the beginning of season 5, House hired a private investigator to find him, and tracked him down himself after that. House risked his life to save Wilson’s girlfriend. Wilson is a presence that House may not always admit he needs, but clearly does. There are also so many things about Wilson that I still want to know; like more about Danny, who is other brother is, who his parents are.

  10. As much as I enjoy Wilson, and adore RSL, I’m OK if he moves on. His heart has always belonged to theatre work. house, the show, has changed over the years and I think it could adapt and even in a positive and good way. I certainly would still watch as long as you have Hugh Laurie in the lead.

  11. I would be heart-broken if RSL left [H]OUSE.
What would House do without his BFF?
I guess I would still watch, but I would miss Wilson very, very much. :(

  12. I’m not eagerly awaiting the return of Olivia Wilde. Please don’t put words in my mouth.
I have nothing against her, I just don’t like her character at all.
Would rather have more air time for Wilson or Chase.

  13. I can say with great confidence that almost NO ONE is anticpating Olivia Wilde’s return. 13 was never more than another element of the show that TPTB mismanaged. She was shoved down the audience’s throats until there was acollective gag. She was the first female character they mistakenly let eclipse House; Cuddy has taken over that mantle this year. Both have ruined the formerly stellar show.

Menwhile RSL the only actor equal to HL’s talent and with who he has real chemistry has been sitting on the sidelines for over 2 seasons pulled down every now and again to be comic releif (and most of that badly written). No wonder he finally had his fill and looked for new work 3000 miles away from the House set.

Good for him and I can’t wait to see him in the play. I’m done watching House anyway I can’t bear it any more; it’s sickeningly awful. I’ve missed seeing how complelling an actor RSL can be when given actual material.

Perhaps when 13 returns they’ll hook up the sickly doc with the doc who needs to be needed and 13 & Wilson can both head off together. “13” to a film career that thus far is filled with one bomb after another that proves nothung except that the prom princess still CAN NOT ACT and “Wilson” to what I have no doubt will be acclaim in the first of many productions welcoming him back to Broadway!

  14. Since the last episode where the lame writers have decided we need to watch house go back to drugs ,and all of the anchors that go with that , destroy his bit of happines I don’t care if they take if off today. My suspicioinis RLS could see the writing on the wall . I refuse to watch an episode again With the lousy state the world is in, the VERY bad reported on the news (instead of just the usual plain old regular bad news ) I wont watch any show that contributes to my misery and seeing how this is now dealing with more deep dark depresion IM OUT . By the way I have watched this show from day one and WAS a big fan .

  15. Well I’ve only seen the Wilson centric episodes this season which were maybe 2 or 3. There is no way in hell I’d watched House without RSL. The show would be unbearable and totally unwatchable.
