House of Cards may be one of the first Netflix series to truly establish the streaming service as a creator of quality original content, and thus far, the show has proven itself a bonafide awards contender as well. Most remarkably, the show has managed to become an audience favorite, even with Netflix’s policy of not disclosing ratings or quantifying its “hit” programs.

The political drama has relished in the deceptive moves of Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) and his wife Claire (Robin Wright) as they work through way up the ranks in Washington D.C. However, with season 2 leaving the pair in a place of particular power, the show’s focus will likely shift from their rise to power into a tale of just how long they can survive at the top.

We’ve already seen a brief tease of the Underwoods’ new life in the White House as well as a longer glimpse at just how tenuous their position may prove to be. Now Netflix has released the above teaser for House of Cards season 3, which depicts the newly anointed President Underwood and First Lady as they pose for a portrait.

Seeing as this new footage is designed to whet fans’ appetites for the next batch of episodes, it aims to ramp up the tension between Frank and Claire. Their relationship has always been based on manipulation and scheming, and with Frank’s new role in Washington, it seems he is becoming increasingly mistrustful of his wife, a suspicion that is seemingly teased further by her ambiguous smile.

House of Cards has long been driven by the nefarious motives of two leads, and with their ascension within Washington having reached its apex, it’s only natural that the series’ next step will be ratcheting up the power struggle taking place internally between Frank and Claire. It’s a natural evolution for the show and one that follows the template established by the BBC miniseries on which the Netflix version is based.

At this point, it remains to be seen just how many seasons of House of Cards Netflix is planning on producing. The BBC show – which this one has closely mirrored so far – only lasted three seasons, but with the notoriety the streaming service has gained based on the show’s success and its desire to continue developing more and more original series each year, it’s likely that House of Cards may manage to stretch its storyline out to season 4 or 5.

House of Cards season 3 will be released exclusively on Netflix on February 27, 2015.
