[SCENE]: *Best Barry White voice* “Hey baby. It’s been too long since we’ve been together. Come over here and snuggle up to me. “ *Music swells* “You know how I like to hold you in my arms. Let me relax those shoulders.” *Background singers* “Mmmm, yeah daddy Hold me!” *Barry again* “You know I will baby, oh yeah, come outside with me,…grab that glass of champagne and take off that robe.” *Bass guitar plays a slow riff* “I’ve got the water warm and my hands warmer…follow me into the hot tub…” *Background singers* “Oh my, I feel so warm!” *Barry whispers* “Yes you do baby; you feel so warm in my Hot Tub Time Machine!”
OK, so maybe that’s not quite how it happens in the movie Hot Tub Time Machine but it sure is how I’d like it to happen, except for the champagne (I don’t drink). Steve Pink (Accepted), who is also producing on Tom Cruise’s new movie Knight & Day, looks like he has directed a great comedy throwback to the 80s. Not hard to do when you have great comedy talent like John Cusack, Craig Robinson, Rob Corddry and comedy legend Chevy Chase all in the credits.
The premise is not too complicated, although the math behind breaking the space-time continuum might be; four guys with nothing better to do decide to go back to the ski lodge where they hung out in the mid-80s to try and wax nostalgic. After a night of drinking, soaking and male bonding “Wild Hogs Style”, they wake up to find themselves transported back to 1986 with the chance to change things in the their lives, for better or worse.
Watch the trailer after the jump:
I’ve always liked the idea behind Hot Tub Time Machine since the first red-band teaser came out a few months back. This trailer has me sold that I’m going to have a great time watching it. Steve Pink has really grabbed the essence of what made the 80s, well, the 80s! Cassette players, leg warmers, horrible neon pink and teal color combinations, Jheri curl hair styles, chicks in bikini tops snow skiing and Michael Jackson being black – all great nods to one of the best decades ever.
I’m hoping there will be a couple of references to one of Cusack’s best films from the 80’s, Better Off Dead. Not just because it was a great film from the 80s but also because Cusack had some great comedic moments in that film that I still enjoy quoting today. “Gee, Ricky, I’m sorry your mom blew up.” “My brother is building a spaceship from kitchen appliances. That thing will probably work.”
Hot Tub Time Machine has the potential to be a fun, irreverent film as long as it doesn’t try to get to serious. I mean, who wouldn’t go back and do something differently when they were young if given the chance? I know I would have rethought my decision to grow my hair out into a ponytail in college.
What did you think of the trailer for Hot Tub Time Machine and what you would do differently if given the chance to swim in one?
Hot Tub Time Machine bubbles into theaters March 19th, 2010.
