Horrible Bosses is one film that made it into our Summer 2011 Movie Preview with a big fat question mark beside it. We haven’t heard much about the film, but its impressive cast and dark premise left us curious, for sure.

Today we have the Horrible Bosses trailer to share, and – in a pun I’m sure you’ll hear 1,000 times – it’s not so horrible after all.

Check out the synopsis for this promising black comedy:

Three friends (Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis) conspire to murder their awful bosses (Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston and Colin Farrell), when they realize they are standing in the way of their happiness. But even with help of a “murder consultant” (Jamie Foxx), they find out that murder isn’t as easy as the nightly news often makes it seem.

Now, some of the more rigid moviegoers out there may look at that premise and instantly be offended at the idea that murder could be used as a source for comedy. However, the trailer below suggests that not only can murder be funny, it will be in this film:

Bateman (Arrested Development), Day (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) and Sudeikis (SNL) are three comedic veterans of the small screen, with Bateman and Day in particular having starred in two of the freshest and most outrageously funny comedy shows of the new millennium (sorry Sudeikis, nobody will say the same for SNL - but you did have a strong guest spot on 30 Rock, and that counts for something!). The director, Seth Gordon, made the awesome geek documentary The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, and has since proven his comedic chops directing notable episodes of great comedy shows like Parks and Recreation, Community, The Office, and Modern Family. (He also directed that Vince Vaughn film Four Christmases, but hey, nobody’s perfect.)

What really sells this movie, though, is not the comedy all-stars in the lead, but rather the silver-screen headliners – Spacey, Farrell and Aniston – who are playing the hilariously evil and demented bosses. At the moment, we’d say that it’s a neck-in-neck tie between Aniston and Farrell for the title of “funniest in this trailer,” but Spacey is no slouch in the dry wit department, so better watch out. (Farrell’s grossly inappropriate nicknames for his workers still have me laughing…)

All in all, the summer of 2011 is wide open for a good comedy to become a sleeper hit. Until now, we’ve been firm believers that Kristen Wiig’s Bridesmaids would take that title (check for our review tomorrow) – but it looks like Horrible Bosses is bringing the goods as well. As bondafide comedy fans, we say ‘the more the merrier.’

Horrible Bosses will be in theaters on July 8, 2011.

  9. trailer had me stifling some laughs at my desk. I’ll probably see it unless what we just saw in the trailer was the funniest parts.

  10. Could someone please explain to me why Dale Arbus (Charlie Day) wants to kill his boss? This movie looks so funny that I don’t really care if realism is present or not, but is there a real cause?
