I’m sure our regular readers may have noticed that there has been no coverage of the theatrical release of the Sex and the City movie here at Screen Rant.
That’s no accident.
I could not be less interested in a movie than I am in this one, but there’s some news that bears mentioning. According to the online movie ticket site (appropriately named) MovieTickets.com, pre-sales of tickets for the film are absolutely on fire, if you can believe it.
You’ve probably heard of the HBO Television series the movie is based on, about a group of attractive women living in New York City on a quest to find the perfect guy (or, as far as I know, any guy that’s hunky and will give them attention). I’ve never seen an episode of the show, and feel free to accuse me of judging it without viewing it. Here’s my advanced reply: Whatever.
Anyway you won’t believe where Sex and the City falls on the following list of all-time top ticket pre-sales for highly anticipated movies…

MovieTickets.com’s Top 20 Pre-Sale List of All-Time
1. Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith
2. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
3. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
4. Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour
5. The Matrix Reloaded
6. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End
7. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
8. Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones
9. The Lord of the Rings: Two Towers
10. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
11. Spider-Man 3
12. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
13. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
14. The Passion of The Christ
15. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest
16. Sex and the City: The Movie
17. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
18. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
19. Transformers
20. X-Men: The Last Stand
My brain is stuttering from the knowledge that this movie is pre-selling more tickets than the first Lord of the Rings movie, the latest Indiana Jones and even freaking Transformers!
I can only conclude that this must be the ultimate “chick flick” and that women will be rushing in droves to see it. No doubt in “packs” because I can’t imagine what tiny percentage of guys will be dragged to this, and then only under the promise of extreme sex afterwards.
A couple of my online movie buddies have seen it and actually said it was pretty good… Over at RottenTomatoes.com it just dipped into “rotten” territory with a 59% positive rating. The average star rating right now is 3/5.
While I don’t plan on seeing it, knowing myself I imagine that my opinion would most likely jive with reviewer Jeffrey Wells:
“The film is another Taliban recruitment film — a grotesque and putrid valentine to the insipid ‘me, my lifestyle, my accessories and I’ chick culture of the early 21st Century. Guys everywhere — if you’re in a brand-new relationship, take her to see this thing. If she even half-likes it, dump her and walk away cold. Save yourself!”
Great, huh?
Sex and the City: The Movie opens tomorrow.

Hey sorry Kane, but you couldn’t be more wrong. It’s obvious your a fan trying to get people to stop insulting your show. I’ve seen half a season of this show and I can tell everyone how it goes. There is nothing ‘gritty’ about it I don’t think you even know what the word means. The Shield is a TV show that’s Gritty not SATC.
SATC is essentially Seinfield only the cast is all women less funny and more risky. The women spend an insane amount of time sitting around a table talking about sex, orgasms and men. Yet with all the talk of men good luck finding a male character that is even close to resembling a human being.
I have always given every show on television a chance no matter what I think of it before I watch it. This was truly one of the worst shows I had ever seen.
Holy crap! If Vic is right, then this is another sign of the Apocalypse! Gaahh! haw haw.
Daniel,
They are vacuous bitches. ‘Nuff said.
Menopause: The Movie.
LOL!
Kane, I read the comments up until you decided to make a generalization about a group of people (”no-passports, women-in-the-kitchen isolation of Bible Belt USA”) in order to prove that making a generalization about this show/group of women is wrong. You lower yourself by such measures, you know? For shame…
I cannot believe I am saying this but all signs are pointing towards a $30+ million opening day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This actually has some chance of beating iron man OW. All depends on saturday number.
Yeah, on my Facebook I’ve noticed an insane amount of dates being made between many of my female friends in order to go see this movie together. Apparently this is one of these shows that a lot of girls had watched during college, and some are planning reunions after graduation just to see it! I don’t care about it in the least but it’s indeed an interesting phenomenon in the making.
I agree with Vic. Despite what Kane said, I do think the show and the movie is very appealing to women for some reason. Perhaps they relate to it a lot. Sure there are some male fans but most wouldn’t be saying, “Hey, buddy! Let’s go see this movie!” Nope, heh.
First of all Kane,
You better start showing some respect around here. Respect the community and people. It’s a SHOW for peace sake! Unless you LIVE it, I don’t understand why you have to get so touchy about what others think.
And yes I know what I am talking about, sad for you, people actually DO have an opinion and regardless of your love for the show, you best keep your tone clean when it comes to judging people here.
If someone said to me that they hate Farscape and BSG (Two shows I LOVE), I couldn’t care less. It’s their loss, I won’t stand up on a pedestal and start preaching… that’s just sad.
And another thing about the bad morals, how do you expect someone with bad morals to reflect negatively on a show that represent them? You may chew on that if you will.
Yes, women find the show appealing and sadly the majority of those women actually have a very poor understanding of relationships and what love actually is. As for what action we get in our bedrooms… come on, that’s just sad… how in the world does that have ANYTHING to do with a bad movie?
If you like Pretty Woman, should we assume that you favor prostitution? Right makes no sense… so stop wasting time here if you don’t like it.
Daniel, you’re right…
And finally Kane, don’t insult Liz!
All you had to do was say, “Maybe you don’t like it but, here’s why I DO”… You know start an intelligent conversation but I guess that’s asking too much…
So, show some respect around here and if you don’t, people will just start ignoring you…
Daniel… I’m sure I COULD be “more wrong”… since I’m not talking TOTAL bull crap. Yes, I’m a fan (of most HBO shows, actually) but that isn’t why I’m on the defensive. And, yes, you’re right – “gritty” isn’t quite the right word… but what I meant is that, in its time, SATC was extremely red hot discussion material that pushed the buttons of what people expected of women on TV.
I know this because it was up there with Buffy and Fight Club as the most discussed and argued about material in pop culture while I was doing media at Uni. It was “out there” and wasn’t afraid to make people question their assumptions about what’s “right” and “wrong” in TV. To a large proportion of society, that kind of programming is a good thing.
But to say the characters are “immoral” is ludicrous (unless you follow a religious dogma taught to you as a child – and which you really can’t be expected to see differently) and to say they’re “useless” is just retarded (they work as highly paid columnists, lawyers, publicists etc.). Moreover, this narrow-minded reference to them as “sluts” is just offensive and proves the old adage: “men are studs… but women are sluts”. It’s such an obviously arrogant and chauvinistic attitude that anyone who believes it doesn’t really deserve a good, intelligent woman.
It’s actually embarrassing… but whatever. You can’t tell an adolescent that they’re still a kid anymore than you can explain to a moron that they’re stupid… or to a chauvinist that they need to give women some respect.
You should all read an article I found yesterday (written by a guy) that asks the questions: “Can men alone make a hit of The Incredible Hulk? Will women stay away? And, by the way, does a box-office expert ever get asked questions like that?” (Read it here: http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/b139976_sex_assumptions_city.html)
Ironic, isn’t it? You’re all so shocked and stunned that a film can do well on female audiences alone. But guess what: there are slightly more women in the world and you don’t see them screaming blue murder over some of the absolute crap WE take to the top grossing lists.
Anyway… my whole point here has been that it’s PERFECTLY FINE not to like something but – for the most part- your assumptions are way off base because you have nothing but your assumption. So if you actually know what you’re taking about, great. Go nuts! But if you’ve never seen something, leave it at baffled (like Vic generally has) rather than claiming the show’s about slutty women and little else (and ruining society or whatever).
‘Cus, guess what: you probably loved a film that had no substance but to whore out toys, video games and/or hot chicks.
And… Stephen… it’s “pete’s sake”, not “peace sake”. ;o)
“George Lucas should look into doing something like this…” Yes, Kim Cattrall could use some special effects. So could Sarah Jessica Parker — Although she has done well in life for someone who could double as Sammy Hagar…
BTW, as someone who lives in the “Bible Belt” I know PLENTY of ladies (and a couple of “guys”) dying to see this movie. So you may vacate your region-centric views.
Honestly, I couldn’t care for or against this movie. I survived a season of Desperate Housewives…
You know I am actually aware of when I’m being a hypocrite, right?
Ever heard the saying “if you can’t beat em…”?
Kane I know it’s Pete’s sake, but I use peace… that’s just me being weird…
I thought that was Sammy Hagar ??
I first got hooked on Sex in the City while deployed in Iraq in 2003. A friend of mine had the 1st season DVD. At first it was just her and I watching the show…then gradually every night the crowd got bigger and bigger and mostly men. The thing is that most men automatically think they cannot relate to the plot lines. But once you start watching you realize how funny and interesting the show is. Ultimately our crowd went through the first 3 seasons and started over again. I went to see this film tonight with a group of 14 friends both men and women and we had a great time being entertained. The film followed the same formula as the show. No big surprises, somewhat predictable plot, but all in all a good film and. By the way the show was sold out, and there where thousands of people waiting in the lobby and outside the multiplex to see the film. Unless attendance nosedives over Saturday and Sunday, Crystal Skull will be in second place and SEX will be close to the 50 mil domestic gross mark. One last remark…Any guy who thinks that the women in this film are not attractive are insane. Any man would love to have a wife as good looking as these women at their ages or any age for that matter.
We’ve got to end this Iraq war and get our troops some better dvds to watch.
Jk, Frank thanks for your service….!
With all due respect to this film ,
I am looking for an alternative this weekend .
I would prefer a new release .
anything else opening?
Sneak preview perhaps?
Although it’s not doing that well at RottenTomatoes.com, I’ve heard that the horror film “The Strangers” is pretty good.
The projection for SATC is just under $40MM this weekend.
Vic
4 women talking endlessly about sex for 2 hours, or home invasion horror. Gary what’s it gonna be?
I cringe typing this but I’m betting SATC makes over 60mil. this weekend Blah there I said it.
Were all doomed btw.
If you stare at the photo long enough they do look like the ledgendary rock group Van Halen (the Hager years) in drag, shopping in Manhatten as part of some bizzare Rolling Stone cover shoot.
(Maybe I’m seeing the future, the future Conan?).
Everytime I see Kim Katrel I think of her as an evil vulcan that likes to tie me up a,,,,never mind.
Aliens vs Predator and the City…..
Cheers. Everyone its friday !! Whheew
$65-75 million projected opening weekend. WOW!

Kane,
I’ll see your link and raise you:
http://blog.spout.com/2008/05/30/5-ways-to-dismiss-the-sex-and-the-city-movie/
Written by a woman and with volumes of quotes by apparently intimidated (heh) men who think it’s terrible as well.
Vic
Any show that can cause this many heated comments must be good…
Oh, never mind.
Funny thing last night, a female friend of mine in NY texted me that she was excited that it was “Sex n the city nite”
I asked if she was on a date, she replied “no- girls nite out”. I couldn’t help but think of some of the earlier comments in this thread.
Kane -
“the no-passports, women-in-the-kitchen isolation of Bible Belt USA.” ??? I am from the midwest and lived on the east coast (NYC and DC). Women (and men) across the country are not as different as your ignorant comment implies, and passports do not equal sophistication
I see this having a big opening, but being the heaviest front loaded movie of the summer. I think in it’s second or third week this movie will fall fast and hard. It won’t even come close to Iron-man or Indy.
Well I was off by about 3mil.
As of Sun aft….
SATC. made 57mil. (No 1
Indy 4. made 46mil. (No 2
Iron Man made 14mil. (No 4
Vic wouldn’t you say that’s at least a 40% drop off for Indy4?
It’s actually much higher than 40% Friday was a 60% drop Saturday was 45% and Sunday was 57%.
I have to wonder if Star Trek 11 is going to have the same fate as Indy4?
Looks like Iron Man is still on top so far this summer.
(IMO) this SATC weekend won’t hold up….
You talk as though Indy 4 is a failure. I’m not an indy fan at all, but the movie isn’t exactly a failure when all is said and done it’s still gonna have a huge amount of money and be in the top 2 or 3 for the summer. Star Trek 11 would be lucky to suffer that fate. However I think the next Trek Movie looks like crap so far. Then again it’s not fair for me to judge since I only liked TNG and I kind of enjoyed DS9, but hated the original as well as Voyager.
Yeah your right, what I meant was that Star Trek 11, will have a good opening weekend and then depending on how many fans are pissed or happy they’ll rise or fall the next weekend.
I think its clear that Indy4 dosnt have the return viewership Iron Man has.
Oh for sure. Iron Man for some reason just hit the perfect sweet spot this year. Indy has terrible legs as it stands right now. Although while it does have worse legs than Iron-man on a day to day comparison it’s still technically higher than Iron-man was on the same day.
Iron Man – $181,675,868 / Day 11
Indy – $216,881,000 / Day 11
Gonna be interesting to see where it all ends up. I imagine when all is said and done they will end up pretty close to each other.
Check your math Daniel, Iron Mans made over 240.mil.
