Jeffrey Wells statement has to be the best I’ve read all week!

It’s so ridicules that we have women who model them selves after these sluts. It should be called Sluts In the City.

I mean it’s really pathetic how these women in this movie are so old and depict horrible morals and are basically useless. Young women want to be as dumb and slutty as Paris Hilton and older women want to be like those awful women in this garbage film!!

What has the world come to?

Jeffrey Wells is right… if you want to make sure your future wife or girlfriend is sane and normal… test her on this show…

It’s getting kind of amusing how out of touch so many guys are on this…

Way back before I was forced to watch the show (and found myself become a MAJOR fan), I thought my sister was really into it and suggested my Mum buy her this trivia game. Turns out it wasn’t my SISTER who was the fan… but her late-20s/early-30s, sports-loving, balding HUSBAND! Sure, my sister liked it… but my brother-in-law was the real fan in the house.

I think the mistake people are making in misjudging the film is that they don’t realise ‘Sex & The City’ is a lot more gritty and shocking than some average, chick-flick, rom-com drama. Well, at least the series was… and that’s all I’ve seen. Over its time, it’s been far more out there than any Judd Apatow film… it just doesn’t have the male protagonist.

Oh, and guess what… PLENTY of female nudity.

Sure… the emotional stories are there to give the show weight… but, to anyone thinking they know what SATC is without having seen it: believe me, you really don’t get it.

As a mate of mine said recently… “I’m sure it’s great but - to be completely honest - I’d find women talking about sex like men intimidating.”

He just began dating my SATC-obsessed cousin and - guess what - he now likes the show.

Ha! I doubt it will…

But what if it did? Indy deserves a beating, if you ask me… and that’s coming from a guy who wrote a 1000 word “essay” about how it couldn’t fail… only to see it and HATE it.

No matter what anyone says… Indy IV is this year’s Transformers or X3. It’s another in a long line of films that do little more than insult audience intelligence.

Not to monopolise the discussion… but I forgot to respond to this:

“I mean it’s really pathetic how these women in this movie are so old and depict horrible morals and are basically useless. Young women want to be as dumb and slutty as Paris Hilton and older women want to be like those awful women in this garbage film!!”

Honestly, man… if you ever saw even one episode, you’d realise you are com-pleeeeeet-ly wrong. You see the word “Sex”, hear about the ONE character who has ever been promiscuous in the show and basically add 1+1 to get 100.

No one’s suggesting you have to like the show, see the movie or… whatever… but at least know what you’re taking about.

I just recently started watching “Battlestar Galactica” after having never seen an episode and, until then, I thought it’d be stupid sci-fi that explains every mundane technology and has all the trappings of “Star Trek”. Turns out I was wrong… and I’m glad I never spewed crap assumptions about it publicly, ‘cus I’d have just looked like a moron.

Thankfully for you, you’re discussing this with like-minded people who share your totally-off-the-mark assumptions.

Gravatar

Kane said,

Well, it’s amazing the power expectation and assumption can have even in the face of evidence to the contrary…

Just look how many people tell themselves Transformers, Indy IV and X3 were good films!

But I dare say he was using irony to hide this typical, shrunken testicles intimidation the film seems to breed.

Anyway, my point is… having watched every episode of SATC… it is simply a FACT that the show is NOT about immoral or “useless” women or “sluts” at all… and anyone who can bypass their fear of strong women for 22 minutes to watch an episode will realise it’s a cleverly written show about real women as they are in almost every Western city on Earth outside of the no-passports, women-in-the-kitchen isolation of Bible Belt USA.

Heck… it even has well-written male characters if you can believe that.

As I say… it’s not to everyone’s taste… but at least hate it for something factual.

Unfortunately I’ve seen plenty of Sex and the City episodes. It is a crap show, it isn’t hard to tell this, and not in the least bit threatening to men, or anyone else.

Movies and shows like this are just annoying. The ones full of men spouting their views on women and how to ‘be a man’ are just as pointless and irritating as this rubbish.
I mean I struggle to watch Scrubs a lot because of JD and his ‘thoughts’ and the moral lessons they learn each time.
SJP is a lot more annoying with her ‘what have I learned today’ bits. Bah to the whole thing!

2. “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”
3. “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King”
4. “Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour”
5. “The Matrix Reloaded”
6. “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End”
7. “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”
8. “Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones”
9. “The Lord of the Rings: Two Towers”
10. “Sex and the City: The Movie”

That’s just crazy. I guess women are starved for movies to go to. Look out for a wave of extreme chick flicks to go into production soon…

Hey sorry Kane, but you couldn’t be more wrong. It’s obvious your a fan trying to get people to stop insulting your show. I’ve seen half a season of this show and I can tell everyone how it goes. There is nothing ‘gritty’ about it I don’t think you even know what the word means. The Shield is a TV show that’s Gritty not SATC.

SATC is essentially Seinfield only the cast is all women less funny and more risky. The women spend an insane amount of time sitting around a table talking about sex, orgasms and men. Yet with all the talk of men good luck finding a male character that is even close to resembling a human being.

I have always given every show on television a chance no matter what I think of it before I watch it. This was truly one of the worst shows I had ever seen.

Yeah, on my Facebook I’ve noticed an insane amount of dates being made between many of my female friends in order to go see this movie together. Apparently this is one of these shows that a lot of girls had watched during college, and some are planning reunions after graduation just to see it! I don’t care about it in the least but it’s indeed an interesting phenomenon in the making.

I agree with Vic. Despite what Kane said, I do think the show and the movie is very appealing to women for some reason. Perhaps they relate to it a lot. Sure there are some male fans but most wouldn’t be saying, “Hey, buddy! Let’s go see this movie!” Nope, heh.

Stephen said,

First of all Kane,

You better start showing some respect around here. Respect the community and people. It’s a SHOW for peace sake! Unless you LIVE it, I don’t understand why you have to get so touchy about what others think.

And yes I know what I am talking about, sad for you, people actually DO have an opinion and regardless of your love for the show, you best keep your tone clean when it comes to judging people here.

If someone said to me that they hate Farscape and BSG (Two shows I LOVE), I couldn’t care less. It’s their loss, I won’t stand up on a pedestal and start preaching… that’s just sad.

And another thing about the bad morals, how do you expect someone with bad morals to reflect negatively on a show that represent them? You may chew on that if you will.

Yes, women find the show appealing and sadly the majority of those women actually have a very poor understanding of relationships and what love actually is. As for what action we get in our bedrooms… come on, that’s just sad… how in the world does that have ANYTHING to do with a bad movie?

If you like Pretty Woman, should we assume that you favor prostitution? Right makes no sense… so stop wasting time here if you don’t like it.

Daniel, you’re right…

And finally Kane, don’t insult Liz!

All you had to do was say, “Maybe you don’t like it but, here’s why I DO”… You know start an intelligent conversation but I guess that’s asking too much…

So, show some respect around here and if you don’t, people will just start ignoring you…

Gravatar
Kane said,
May 30th, 2008

Daniel… I’m sure I COULD be “more wrong”… since I’m not talking TOTAL bull crap. Yes, I’m a fan (of most HBO shows, actually) but that isn’t why I’m on the defensive. And, yes, you’re right - “gritty” isn’t quite the right word… but what I meant is that, in its time, SATC was extremely red hot discussion material that pushed the buttons of what people expected of women on TV.

I know this because it was up there with Buffy and Fight Club as the most discussed and argued about material in pop culture while I was doing media at Uni. It was “out there” and wasn’t afraid to make people question their assumptions about what’s “right” and “wrong” in TV. To a large proportion of society, that kind of programming is a good thing.

But to say the characters are “immoral” is ludicrous (unless you follow a religious dogma taught to you as a child - and which you really can’t be expected to see differently) and to say they’re “useless” is just retarded (they work as highly paid columnists, lawyers, publicists etc.). Moreover, this narrow-minded reference to them as “sluts” is just offensive and proves the old adage: “men are studs… but women are sluts”. It’s such an obviously arrogant and chauvinistic attitude that anyone who believes it doesn’t really deserve a good, intelligent woman.

It’s actually embarrassing… but whatever. You can’t tell an adolescent that they’re still a kid anymore than you can explain to a moron that they’re stupid… or to a chauvinist that they need to give women some respect.

You should all read an article I found yesterday (written by a guy) that asks the questions: “Can men alone make a hit of The Incredible Hulk? Will women stay away? And, by the way, does a box-office expert ever get asked questions like that?” (Read it here: http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/b139976_sex_assumptions_city.html)

Ironic, isn’t it? You’re all so shocked and stunned that a film can do well on female audiences alone. But guess what: there are slightly more women in the world and you don’t see them screaming blue murder over some of the absolute crap WE take to the top grossing lists.

Anyway… my whole point here has been that it’s PERFECTLY FINE not to like something but - for the most part- your assumptions are way off base because you have nothing but your assumption. So if you actually know what you’re taking about, great. Go nuts! But if you’ve never seen something, leave it at baffled (like Vic generally has) rather than claiming the show’s about slutty women and little else (and ruining society or whatever).

‘Cus, guess what: you probably loved a film that had no substance but to whore out toys, video games and/or hot chicks.

And… Stephen… it’s “pete’s sake”, not “peace sake”. ;o)

I first got hooked on Sex in the City while deployed in Iraq in 2003. A friend of mine had the 1st season DVD. At first it was just her and I watching the show…then gradually every night the crowd got bigger and bigger and mostly men. The thing is that most men automatically think they cannot relate to the plot lines. But once you start watching you realize how funny and interesting the show is. Ultimately our crowd went through the first 3 seasons and started over again. I went to see this film tonight with a group of 14 friends both men and women and we had a great time being entertained. The film followed the same formula as the show. No big surprises, somewhat predictable plot, but all in all a good film and. By the way the show was sold out, and there where thousands of people waiting in the lobby and outside the multiplex to see the film. Unless attendance nosedives over Saturday and Sunday, Crystal Skull will be in second place and SEX will be close to the 50 mil domestic gross mark. One last remark…Any guy who thinks that the women in this film are not attractive are insane. Any man would love to have a wife as good looking as these women at their ages or any age for that matter.

Star Trek 11 would be lucky to suffer that fate. However I think the next Trek Movie looks like crap so far. Oh for sure. Iron Man for some reason just hit the perfect sweet spot this year. Indy has terrible legs as it stands right now. Although while it does have worse legs than Iron-man on a day to day comparison it’s still technically higher than Iron-man was on the same day.

Iron Man - $181,675,868 / Day 11

Indy - $216,881,000 / Day 11

Gonna be interesting to see where it all ends up. I imagine when all is said and done they will end up pretty close to each other.

Also As much as I love Batman I don’t think it really has a chance of beating Iron-man. I wish it would nothing would make me happier to see TDK become the highest grossing super hero movie of all time. Sadly I have to deal with reality. More than likely it will land around 260 - 280 range. Since Iron-man is already at 276M I don’t see TDK as having a chance of beating it.

Wow, what a thread. Vic, I think this thread is almost as conversational as the thread about the documentary. You sure know how to stir the pot. :o)

Guys, I’m tellin’ ya, I think Iron Man is gonna be the biggest film of the year.

It certainly deserves to be….

I don’t see Iron Man outperforming Indy, but I’d be happy to be wrong about that. Also, while The Dark Knight is going to be HUGE, the fact that it’s going to be so dark and creepy may limit the box office somewhat. For example my daughter loves superhero movies but based on what she’s seen of the Joker, she doesn’t want to go see the movie.

And based on that glimpse of Harvey Dent… yikes! This one isn’t for the kiddies.

My thoughts exactly, Vic. While I’m definitely looking forward to it and it will certainly be better than Batman Returns, with such grotesque takes on the villains, it may go the route of that film and under perform.

Not to mention people have seen Batman plenty of times before, I don’t think it will bring in the “curious” crowd that Iron Man brought.

I don’t think TDK will out perform Iron Man tho.
….and I’m betting that Iron Man is also the better film, personaly. It exceeded my (and about everyone else’s) expectations.

We’ll see.

Couldn’t agree more. As much as I Love Batman and despite the fact that TDK will probably be the best summer film to come out in a really long time. I don’t see it beating out Iron-Man. I wish it would. I enjoyed Iron-Man, but it lacked the depth that Begins had and that TDK will have.

Personally, altho Batman is my all time fave hero (Iron Man is my third), I really thought that Iron Man was better than Batman Begins. Not waaay better than Begins, but better. Possibly the best superhero film of all time. :-)

I have to question how some one could think that. Iron-man was good, but it was more focused on action and lacked a lot of substance and depth. Begins was an awesome story.

Geez, look at what this thread’s become hehe. :-)
Ah……here goes.

Iron Man, IMO, was better for the following reasons:

1) MINIMAL LOVE INTEREST STORY LINE
If you inquired all Batman Begins fans around the world about what one thing they DIDN’T like about the movie, almost universally (with exceptions) the answer coming back with be “The damn love story with the wooden walking Tom Cruise baby incubator”. It felt like every time Rachel Dawes was on screen the pace and motion of the movie ground to a complete halt… and the love interest was never sold. It felt forced and unnatural. Iron Man on the other hand had a very minimalist approach to the love interest story line… the two never even kiss. Not to mention, Gwyneth Paltrow fit in with the movie much better and never got in the way. She, and her relationship with Tony Stark actually HELPED the story as opposed to hinder it.

2) YOU CAN SEE THE DAMN ACTION
My one critique of Christopher Nolan’s direction when it came to Batman Begins was how he choose to shoot the action sequences. Whenever Batman was going to do something really cool (like beat the hell out of the henchmen at the docks), Nolan either choose to have the camera cut away to something else so you only HEAR Batman doing his thing, or committed the heinous sin of shaking the bloody camera around like an German midget having an epileptic seizure to create a fake and artificial sense of “action” or “intensity”. This drove me nuts. Iron Man on the other had generally always had him in frame, in the shot allowing us to see what he was doing. Thank you Mr. Favreau!

3) IRON MAN HAPPENS IN THE REAL WORLD
There’s something about brining the fantastic into the mundane that makes the fantastic all the more awe inspiring. Prior to Jurassic Park, I had seen lots of movies with Dinosaurs, but they were usually back in time (where you would expect to see Dinosaurs). But when Jurassic Park brought those creatures into the the world and time we live in, there was something far more magical and awe inspiring about it. Batman Begins doesn’t really exist in our world totally. The styles, technology (better and worse) and atmosphere of “Gotham City” (which is also fictional) are all slightly off from the real world. And so, when the environment is a fictional world, the fictional characters dwelling in it seem a TOUCH less fantastic because they’re not in the world we inhabit. Iron Man on the other hand takes place in the context of our world… which for me personally, made it engage my imagination all the more. Some people won’t agree with this point, and that’s fair since it is subjective.

4) ROBERT DOWNEY JR.’S TONY STARK IS A MORE ENTERTAINING CHARACTER THAN CHRISTIAN BALE’S BRUCE WAYNE
Please note I’m not saying Tony Stark is a BETTER character than Bruce Wayne. I don’t think he is… but there’s no denying that when sitting in a movie theater, the moments that Tony Stark is on screen are more entertaining to watch than Bruce Wayne. In Iron Man, Stark is a funny, quick tonged character who almost always said or did something on screen that made you laugh or love him even more. His quick one liners and general disposition made watching him on screen almost as fun as watching Iron Man on screen. Same can’t really be said for Bruce.

5) IRON MAN HAD BETTER DIALOG
Say what you will, but man… that little speech Rachel Dawes gives Bruce as they’re driving in the car in front of Falcone’s was nauseating. “Who will stand for justice… yadda yadda yadda”. There were actually several monologues in the film that had a high cheese factor to them… some awesome ones too. Iron Man just seemed to have tighter dialog. Sillier sometimes for certain… but rarely diving into the deep blue cheese. It was usually witty and with the wink of an Iron eye at times… but for what it was it was pretty tight.

6) IRON MAN ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE IRON MAN
Sorry, but Marvel translated the look of Iron Man PERFECTLY onto film (just like they did with Spider-Man), you look at him and he looks like the best of Iron Man in the comics; the believability of the Extremis suit yet with the charm and a tip of the hat to the Classic armor (thank God they didn’t use that Superman style triangular chest logo the current suit has and instead used the circular one). Meanwhile, Batman still hasn’t escaped from the Burton tradition; all black rubber/plastic suit w/ yellow belt that looks nothing like the comics suit (what Burton movie DOESN’T have black rubber?). Not only is it impractical and impossible for Batman to move in, it also looks really, really fake, especially when you get an actor who has ACTUALLY WORKED OUT for the part and has REAL MUSCLES and could wear the comics style bat suit and make it believable. The batsuit in The Dark Knight looks even worse, not only is it still plastic/rubbery looking it is now too busy/detailed and makes Batman look mechanic, Batman is NOT Iron Man, stop with the armor horsecrap (look at TDK suit’s friggin’ shoulders! gah!). DC/WB, please, Burton’s Batman was 20 years ago, OK? Burton’s all about being “chic” and “stylish” and in his own world and doesn’t respect the comic books, he even said he never has and never will read a comic! (It’s amazing that his first Batman film turned out the way it did!) So don’t you think it’s time to put Batman in his black and gray comics style gear? It doesn’t have to be a halloween costume, it can be cool looking and made out of special materials (like the Daredevil, Spider-Man, Fantastic 4, and even Harry Osborn suits’ MATERIAL), but for godsakes get rid of the damn Burton suit variations already! The black, gray, and flexible comics style batsuit WILL work, even soldiers wear those colors/shade, it would work great on film if you’d let it.

7) IRON MAN WAS CLOSER TO THE COMICS
Q: Were Bruce Wayne’s parents murdered after watching a crappy opera that had the one thing in it (bats) that scares the bejezus out of their kid (yet they took him to it anyway)? A: No, they were murdered on their way home from seeing a film (that their son actually liked!). Q: Was the BATMOBILE ever a piece of crap humvee tank that Bruce Wayne just found in some garage at his company? A: No, he built it, and it was very sleek/streamlined. Q: Did Bruce Wayne make his costume or did he also find that in a garage at his company? A: He got what he needed (with some occasional help) for it and made it mostly himself. Q: Was Bruce Wayne trained by Ra’s Al Ghul? A: No. Q: Does Rachel Dawes exist in the comics? A: Hell no! Q: Does Batman sound like a hissing cat when he talks? A: No, he makes his voice deeper than it is when he is Bruce Wayne and is sometimes whispery, like Kevin Conroy’s voice as Batman on Batman: the animated series and the Justice league/Justice League Unlimited cartoons. BB, while still the best Batman film so far (TDK will be better, IMO) really dropped the ball in some areas (for me). Iron Man got waaaaay more right than Batman Begins did.

So there ya have it. That is why I think Iron Man is now possibly the best superhero film of all time.

I realize that some of this may or may not be me nitpicking, but nevertheless, I think Iron Man is the superior film. Batman is my favorite superhero (Iron Man is my third fave), by the way, so please don’t think that I’m hatin’ on him, I just thought Iron Man was better. :-)

Begins certainly wasn’t perfect all give you that, but even with it’s errors at least there was emotional investment at least there was depth and a strong story. I really enjoyed Iron-Man, but it was mostly and Action comedy with very little story. I guess we will have to agree to disagree. There is only one thing on your list I’ll agree with and that’s the whole Racheal and Bruce love thing.

I’ll admit I was a slight nitpicky towards the end, BTW. Just my opinion. :-D
