After a long wait, Hocus Pocus 2 is finally coming to Disney+, and while some original characters are not coming back for this new story, some of the biggest ones will – and here’s who. Disney has built an extensive catalog of animated and live-action movies, most of them aimed at a young audience, and the Mouse House has at least one movie for almost every holiday, including Halloween. Disney’s “spooky” content follows the studio’s well-known line of family-friendly content, and a movie that has become a must-watch during this season is Hocus Pocus.

Released in 1993 and directed by Kenny Ortega, Hocus Pocus follows the Sanderson Sisters – Winifred (Bette Midler), Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker), and Mary (Kathy Najimy) –, who, in 1693, after draining the life force out of a little girl and cursing her brother to live forever as a black cat, are hanged. However, Winifred manages to cast a curse that will resurrect her and her sisters during a full moon on Halloween if a virgin lights the Black Candle at their cottage. Three centuries later, Max Dennison (Omri Katz) inadvertently resurrects the Sanderson Sisters through the aforementioned method, and so he, his sister Dani (Thora Birch), and his crush Allison (Vinessa Shaw), have to find a way to get rid of the witches before they drain the life force out of all the children in Salem so they can continue living.

Hocus Pocus wasn’t well received during its initial release, with critics calling it “mediocre” and not liking its sense of humor, but time has been a lot nicer to it. Thanks to many annual airings on Disney Channel throughout October, Hocus Pocus has now become a cult classic and a must-watch during spooky season, and this much warmer reception has finally made way for a sequel. Simply titled Hocus Pocus 2, and directed by Anne Fletcher, the movie will see three high school students who, just like Max did 29 years ago, resurrected the Sanderson sisters, and now must find a way to stop them. In addition to that, Hocus Pocus 2 will explore the backstory of the Sanderson Sisters, allowing the audience to get to know them a bit more. Although the main characters of the first movie won’t return for this new story, the Sanderson sisters will, along with two other characters, though one in a different way. Here’s every character returning in Hocus Pocus 2.

Winifred Sanderson

Winifred Sanderson using her powers in Hocus Pocus

Winifred “Winnie” Sanderson is the eldest of the Sanderson sisters and also the most intelligent one, thus serving as the leader. Winifred kept the Manual of Witchcraft and Alchemy, an evil spell book given to her by the Devil himself after selling her soul to him, and in this book are the recipes for her most powerful spells. Winifred is dramatic, sadistic, temperamental, and vain, but also very intelligent, and as mentioned above, she’s the one who cast the spell that can bring her and her sisters back. Each of the Sanderson sisters has powers, and in Winifred’s case, she possesses electrokinesis (the ability to create, shape, and manipulate electricity, which in her case manifests as green lightning bolts from her fingertips), hypnotic voice (though very limited and only with adults), potion brewing, spell casting (and with that cursing, limited zombie manipulation, and continual action inducement), and can fly using brooms.

Mary Sanderson

Hocus Pocus Mary Sanderson

Mary Sanderson is the middle sister, and even though she isn’t as smart as Winifred, she serves as her right-hand mostly because she’s always trying to appease Winnie and compliments her all the time. This has made way for a slight rivalry between Mary and Sarah, but Mary is also the most caring of the Sanderson sisters, and is always looking after her sisters. Mary’s main power is her supernatural sense of smell, which helps her locate children in proximity and from long distances, and she often suggested ways in which they could cook the children they captured. Just like Winifred, Mary also has the abilities of potion brewing, spell casting (cursing and continual action inducement), and broom flight – including a vacuum cleaner, her only alternative when they returned in 1993.

Sarah Sanderson

Sarah is the youngest of the Sanderson sisters and also the most beautiful – but she’s also the air-headed of the trio. Sarah is extremely flirtatious and enjoys playing with men, but she also has a sadistic sense of humor, and all that “playing” isn’t always harmless. This attitude ended up fracturing her relationship with Winifred when her boyfriend cheated on her with Sarah, and since then, Mary has had to act as a peacemaker between them. She’s the least intelligent of the Sanderson sisters, much to Winifred’s frustration, but she’s a valuable member of the group thanks to her powers. Sarah has a hypnotic voice, which unlike Winifred’s, is exclusive to children, which comes very in handy when they need children for their spells and potions. Just like Winifred and Mary, Sarah also has the abilities of potion brewing, spell casting (cursing and continual action inducement), and broom flight.

Billy Butcherson

Hocus Pocus 2 Doug Jones as Billy Butcherson

William “Billy” Butcherson (Doug Jones) was once in a relationship with Winifred, but he cheated on her with Sarah, which not only ended his relationship with both but also fractured the one between the two sisters. Winifred, being her vindictive and cruel self, poisoned Billy and sewed his mouth shut so even in death he couldn’t reveal her secrets. Billy appeared in Hocus Pocus as a zombie, and though he first seemed to be on Winifred’s side, he actually turned out to be a nice zombie, and he helped Binx, Max, Dani, and Allison defeat the Sanderson sisters – and once Billy was able to open his mouth and talk again, he made it very clear that he greatly despises Winifred.

Binx (But Different)

Binx as a cat in Hocus Pocus

Thackery Binx (played in human form by Sean Murray and voiced by Jason Marsden in cat form) was the brother of Emily Binx, the young girl the Sandersons killed in order to absorb her life force and become young and strong again. Thackery tried to save her but failed, and after insulting Winifred, he was cursed to live forever as a black cat. After the Sandersons were hanged and Winifred cast the spell, he guarded their house every Halloween night to prevent their resurrection, but he couldn’t stop Max from accidentally doing so. Binx was a valuable ally to Dani, Max, and Allison, and once they got rid of the Sanderson sisters, Binx’s soul was freed and he finally died, reuniting with Emily. Binx as seen in Hocus Pocus won’t return in Hocus Pocus 2, but director Anne Fletcher has teased Binx will be present in some way, though not as a talking cat, so it’s to be seen how they will bring the beloved black cat/brave kid back.
