Saoirse Ronan Unconfirmed for ‘The Hobbit’; Wants to Play an Elf

Published 3 years ago by , Updated August 13th, 2013 at 10:12 pm,

We had the opportunity to speak with Saoirse Ronan at WonderCon today about her upcoming teen-assassin action film Hanna.

In the course of the conversation, the young actress was asked about her involvement with Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit, which is currently in production in New Zealand.

It was rumored in January that Ronan had been offered a role in the film, which began a frenzy of speculation about which character she would play. When asked if she was actually attached she replied:

“No, I’m not actually attached. I’m not confirmed. But they are introducing new characters. I know that, a few new characters.”

In terms of what kind of character Ronan might potentially portray in the film, should she end up taking on a role, the actress answered somewhat teasingly with:

“Well, IMDb says one thing. I think I could pass for an elf. I think if I had the right ears. I wouldn’t want to be a Hobbit. Certainly not. I don’t like harry feet.”

Clearly this is not a confirmation, or denial, of her participation in the project, but it does indicate that she is at least in talks for the role. It’d be hard for her to know that characters were being added to the film – if she had not been approached in some manner. In any event, we clearly expect to hear more in the way of casting news for the The Hobbit in the coming weeks.

Leave your best guess as to the role that Ronan might play in the comments section below!

Look forward to our interview coverage of Hanna with Saoirse Ronan and Joe Wright in the coming days.

The Hobbit is in production now, and is scheduled for release on December 19th, 2012

  1. I dont know who she would play but I dont care, bring it. Winning.

  2. I’m not sure who she would play. I agree that she would make a great elf. I think her facial structure would translate well into an elf. In The Hobbit there really were no main female elf characters. They would have to create someone new. That could be good or bad. We’ll just have to wait and see.

  3. I cannot wait to see her in Hanna!! that movie looks amazing!! and it seems we are going to start seeing Saoirse Ronan in a lot of movies…
For now, I’m going to watch tomorrow “The way back” by Peter Weir, where she has one of the leading roles and I will review it on my blog… I hope she doesn’t disappoint me…

  4. They are now nearly two weeks into shooting and STILL no word about Hugo Weaving. That is a bit disturbing considering how important he is to both the continuity with LotR and his expanded role in this movie.

    • That would be a major hitch if they couldn’t get him on-board, but I think they will eventually.

  5. She’d definitely make a good elf, no doubt about that. I’m sure that’s what they’re talking to her about.

  6. My guess is the reason why there is no word on Hugo Weaving is that they can film the Dwarves/Bilbo in Rivendell at the end of shooting. There is a lot they can film otherwise – and really Elrond is only there a tiny bit. That, or who knows, maybe they scrapped the map scene (though with how the map ties in so wonderfully with the doors of Moria that’d be a shame).

Doubtless Saiorse could be an elf in Thranduil’s court, with her part really being fleshed out in the second film, which is going to be a real departure from the literature, as they only have a list of events to go on, and no prose.

  7. When did Peter Jackson get un-fat?

    • Seems like after he started to smoke… whatever it is that he smokes…

  8. In her own words…she is not confirmed and she is not attached. And from her comments, I would judge overall that she is also not in talks or negotiations for any role(s) either. After all, if she were in talks, she would not be able to comment anyway. Clearly she would like a part in The Hobbit – wouldn’t we all, after all? But it sounds to me that the “rumours” of her involvement are just fan-speculation, nothing more than that.

  9. She looks a lot like Kate’s Galadriel in that shot! Perhaps she could be Galadriel’s daughter Celebrían, who was Elrond’s wife. A stunner, in any case.

I always wished they had used a blonded-up Catherine Zeta Jones for Galadriel (who was supposed to be *intimidating* on top of being gorgeous, and Kate wasn’t overwhelming in that way, really), and Pat MacGoohan (R.I.P. to a master) for Gandalf (the firey spirit would have mathced better imo), but we can’t have everything. ;)
