Oh yeah, as for the Silmarillion, unless you are the biggest fan of LotR in the world, don’t even attempt it. I’m taking a class on Tolkien, and the professor couldn’t stand it. It is one giant free write basically. Tolkien’s mind was everywhere and the Silmarillion is basically a compilation of his notes.

I hope that del Toro is using Tolkien’s sources as well like Jackson obviously did for the movies. Smaug should be a representation between the dragon form Beowulf (the epic, not the movie) and Fafnir from Saga of the Vulsungs. That basically means that the art of the dragon should capture a Scandinavian/Finnish style.

As long as del Toro doesn’t make a 3rd version of that weird eye creature that was in both Hellboy II and Pan’s Labyrinth. Thing is ridiculous..

I agree with Josh Rose, hopefully he doesn’t deviate too much from what Jackson has already successfully created.

People used to say LOTR was unfilmable, and Watchmen, so I kinda think it could be made, it just needs someone to thin through the mammoth text and get to the bare bones of the story. It would take a more adult director to bring the darkness of the story to the big screen, but it can be done, as one intense fantasy movie.

Massively looking forward to this, after the disappointment of Return Of The King, this should be excellent. With such an amazing director at the helm, this could be even more special than LOTR, if it takes it back to the roots of Fellowship.

Practically everything Tolkien ever wrote is in the LOTR universe. He was writing Middle Earth since WWI, 40-50 years before Rings was published. Definitely check out The Silmarillion.

For the creature designs, they’d better have something fantastic for Smaug, and it sounds like they do. As for Wargs, I hope they don’t deviate too much from the Rings’ designs, and those Trolls better look just like the stone ones we see in Fellowship.

yes this is my most anticapted movie for sure. TLOTR was the best movies ever made by far so epic and well acted every was flawless in those movies. never been enthrolled in a movie universe in my life. is there any other books JRR tolkein wrote that are like this?

These creatures look awesome! I don’t know if they can top the creatures from Lord of the Rings but if they even come close it will be great!
