Right now, all eyes are on Warner Bros.’ upcoming superhero reboot Man of Steel. The film – starring Henry Cavill (Immortals) as Superman and directed by Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen) – just may prove to be the launching pad the studio needs to jumpstart a shared movie universe, leading to either a Batman/ Superman team-up or that elusive Justice League film (or both).

However, that’s not the only franchise that will receive a boost when the Last Son of Krypton zooms into theaters. One of Warner Bros.’ other long-term investments – Peter Jackson’s return to Middle-Earth with The Hobbit trilogy – is about to return to the public consciousness in a big way.

According to Emileeid.com, the first trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will make its debut in theaters with Man of Steel next week. Before that, though, the footage is set to pop up online June 12th at 10am PDT. Word is that this is a full two-minute trailer featuring actual footage from the film and not merely a teaser to let moviegoers know the film is on the way.

In a time where many high-profile releases are promoting seconds-long teasers for their trailer releases, Warner Bros.’ direct approach here is refreshing, and of course, the decision to attach the Hobbit footage to arguably the studio’s biggest 2013 film is a no-brainer.

The question remains, though, as to precisely what footage the Desolation of Smaug trailer will highlight. Given that we recently got our first look at the character played by Evangeline Lilly of Lost fame, expect her to make an appearance, possibly alongside Orlando Bloom as elf warrior Legolas.

Fans will be most looking forward to the big reveal of Smaug, the fire-breathing dragon of the title, whom Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) and his companions seek to destroy. That character is voiced by Star Trek into Darkness actor Benedict Cumberbatch but didn’t make a significant appearance in the first film of the trilogy. The character is central to the story and could very well appear – if only briefly – in the film’s first trailer. However, don’t count on getting a good look at the creature, as the film’s marketing is likely to rely on building mystery around its titular antagonist.

Man of Steel opens in regular and select 3D/IMAX theaters in the U.S. on June 14th, 2013. It stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Antje Traue, Ayelet Zurer and Russell Crowe.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opens in theaters on December 13th, 2013. The final chapter, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, arrives in theaters on December 17th, 2014.

  1. just another reason to see man of steel on opening day =D in imax 3d hoorah

  2. Yes, bring on the trailer!!!

  3. the greatest day of my life

  4. I’m excited for this movie but that picture of Tauriel looks like mediocre cosplay.

    • I thought the same thing when I saw it.. Its like she’s female link at comic-con or something.

  5. “… the decision to attach the Hobbit footage to arguably the studio’s biggest 2013 film is a no-brainer.”

    Come on, Mr Yaniz.

    There is NO argument.

    • Desolation of Smaug may very well be the studio’s biggest 2013 film, seeing as how the first one banked over one billion. We’ll see.

      • Yes, really looking forward to the Desolation of Smaug. This could be by far the best in the whole Hobbit series.

  6. The trailer doesnt make me eager to watch the pre trailers. I didnt enjoy part 1 and u thought the cgi of the dragon was poor. Id rather see the pacific rim and gravity trailers again

  7. Im super excited for this. Hoping to see the trailer and Man of Steel on my birthday :)

  8. I hope they don’t really show Smaug in the trailer. At least not more than they did in the first film.
If they do, then they will confirm the accusations of the theatre owners that trailers these days have too many spoilers.

    • Agree that they should not show all of Smaug, just the voice and a few smokey glimpses. But who know what Warner Brothers is insisting on? And while I like Legolas and don’t have an objection to him showing up, the last informal poll I saw indicated far and away the strongest interest in the new characters is Smaug, then Beorn, then Bard, with this female elf way at the bottom. I’d hate to see a trailer featuring a throw-away invented character shoehorned into the mix.

But, enough of the negativity, I loved the Hobbit, Bilbo, and the Dwarves, and I’m going to get a bit of a Hobbit fix – online, since I’ve waited long enough. Envy people who will see it on the big screen, but I’m not paying to see a film just for a trailer.

      • Definitely should not show all of Smaug. A lot of smoke would be cool and add dramatic effect.

  9. If I could put a GIF here it would be a girl with a really huge mouth shouting YES at the top of her lungs and putting on a fist up in the freaking air!

  10. Seriously can’t wait to see this! The Hobbit was my favourite film in the LOTR universe so far, still waiting for the extended version to come out on Blu Ray!!

  11. I don’t wanna see smaug yet, let the anticipation build, hopefully just hear cumberbatch’s voice right at the end of the trailer, either way i can’t wait til the 14th for this and MoS

  12. there’s an error in the article preview on the main page it sais “The trailer for ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ will premiere online July 12th and be attached to theatrical prints of ‘Man of Steel. But then the article above sais june 12 which is the correct date. Should probably fix that.

  13. So, I will have to wait a week to see it online, because I will NOT throw money away on Superman just to see the Hobbit Trailer.

    • LMAO! Nobody likes Superman? I admit, he’s no Christopher Reeves. I’m sure it will still be good.

  14. Maybe we will see BEORN, not sure it will be in Bear Form though. Maybe a few scenes from Laketown, Bard, Legolas, Thranduil, Tauriel, the Furnace with wings aka SMAUG, i know at first it was mentioned that the trailer was 2 minutes 30 seconds, but no

    • but now it is listed as 2 minutes 1 second. So we will find out soon enough.

  15. Hopefully it’s a good trailer. I’m looking forward to the next Hobbit film. I was already excited for Man of Steel, but this is just another thing to look forward to.

I was a little disappointed with the first Hobbit movie. I’m hoping that the last two can be a return to form for this franchise.

  16. People shouldn’t be so prejudiced against The Hobbit: Desolation Of Smaug just because the first film was a bit disappointing.

  17. It’s a pleasant surprise to find that we’ll be getting a glimpse of The Hobbit II on the big screen. Mr. Macbrooks and I were planning on watching Man of Steel in the theater so this news is most welcome.

    mac :]

  18. waiting…….

  19. wow with the new smash bros trailer on monday, this one on wednesday, this is the end also releasing wednesday, then man of steel on friday, next week is gonna rock.

  20. I think a Smaug voiceover with a slow fade into Bilbo sneaking around the treasure room would be awesome.

  21. A trailer already? Wow they’ve been hard at work =D Can’t wait, loved The Hobbit. Yeah, not sure that I want to see Smaug in the trailer yet, at least not fully. Maybe a shadow or voice.

  22. I’m excited for the trailer but I’m hoping that they only show a tease of Smaug if at all…
I’ll watch no matter what because I have zero will power when it comes to trailers but I’d be happy going into DoS seeing as little as possible of the dragon.

  23. Can’t wait (though, I obviously have to :().

  24. No Desolation of Smaug trailer during the 2D version of Man of Steel.

    • Indeed. Quite the disappointment when we watched the 2D Man of Steel on the 14th, especially after over a half hour of commercials that started at the movie’s listed start time.

I was hoping our theatre was the only one with the omission, ie a mistake of some sort.

      mac :]
