Highlander Remake Highlander Remake Story & Script Still in The Works

There can only be one! The Highlander franchise tagline couldn’t have been more wrong.

After a series of films featuring  Christopher Lambert as the immortal Connor MacLeod a successful Highlander TV series starring Adrian Paul was launched, with Paul playing another member of the Clan MacLeod. Eventually, both immortals met for the film Highlander: Endgame and that was the end of the main franchise until Summit Entertainment announced a reboot in 2008, with Justin Lin (Fast Five) signing on to direct back in 2009, with Neil Moritz producing.

Although Lin is busy planning Terminator 5 with Arnold Schwarzenegger attached, as well as the obligatory Fast & Furious 6 movie, he’s still on board with Highlander and the script is being worked on.

Next week will mark the three-year anniversary to when we first reported about the Highlander remake and the latest news on the subject comes from an MTV interview last week with Justin Lin where the growing-in-demand director explains that he’s working with Iron Man writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway on the script and that he wants to ensure the story is exactly where he wants it before proceeding, assuming his busy schedule allows for it.

“I’ve been working with ['Iron Man' writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway] on the script. That’s one where Summit has been really good [about letting it develop], and for me, it’s about making sure that we can take it to the place where I feel comfortable and great about making it. I feel like I have a very good studio and team and we’re working on it.”

“I have different projects at different stages. You work on so many projects all at once, and at some point, you have to make the call. I feel like right now, ‘Highlander’ is in pretty good shape, but I still have to see all the other things come together for us to go make it.”

The last we heard in Highlander was that Summit was bringing in Melissa Rosenberg (Twilight) to pen the reboot’s screenplay so it’s interesting to hear Lin refer to the previous writers. At the same time, it sounds like Lin is rather willing to drop this project in favor of his others so it’s unclear where the project really stands at this point.

On the casting front, Lin and the studio will need a younger growing star to headline the franchise relaunch and it’s a safe assumption that those who didn’t make the cut for Thor or the Conan the Barbarian remake will be lining up to audition.

Sean Connery played the key supporting role in the original Highlander so don’t be surprised if Lin brings in a veteran A-list actor in a similar mentor role for the remake to help make the film more bankable for Summit.

  1. I can’t think right now who’d be good to play Conner but how about Christina Aguilera or Katie Holmes as Brenda Wyatt., I think that’d be good. Hell instead of a remake they could give the lead another name like John or Sean Macleod & make it a parallel to the original. either way I think Peter Wingfield, would be a good choice for Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez, Or other named mentor Character. Jet Li for Nakano instead of Ramirez, I know third film character but still, I’d see nothing wrong with it. Whatever elss they do or not lets have some female immortals this time, like the series did. Say Morgan Fairchild as a warrior queen from a thousand years ago. Or Renee O’Connor as an ancient amazon, lol. Anyway what I’d really like to see more then anything would be a prequel film explaining where the immortals first came from & why they exist in the first place. This could be about Methos instead of Macleod Connor or Duncan.

    • John,

I liked a lot of what you had to say but I think it would be a bad idea for the remake to try and explain the origin of the immortals. They tride that with Highlander II and it sucked. I don’t think anything the writers of the remake could make up about the origin of the immortals would be very satisfying. Sometimes a little unsolved mistery actually adds to the overall quality of a story.

  2. I hope this happens. I would LOVE an updated version of this movie

  3. Alright, this is who needs to be in the remake:

Connor MacLeod – James McAvoy: A young and talented *Scottish* actor with amazing talents.

Juan Ramirez – Liam Kneeson: Amazing veteran actor, also celtic, like Connery is, and lets be honest – he would make a MUCH better Ramirez than anyone else, including Peter Wingfield.

Get these two actors for said rolls – and I guarantee you, it WILL be a hit!!

  4. No to be a total nerd but it’s “There can BE only one.”

Sorry just wanted to get that off my geeky chest. Feel better now.

  5. This is an awful idea. I hope this doesn’t happen

  6. I have been a huge fan of the Highlander Franchise since I was a wee lad. Starting with the series and then working through the movies. As much as a fan of it all as I am I have two movies I cannot stand. Highlander 2 and 5. That near future stuff is just horrible and has yet to be written in a way that makes it Highlander Worthy. I would love to see the series revived in a way that makes it a worth while movie to watch.
As for actors and characters. If its going to be a remake it has to be the same characters in my book. Ramirez, Connor, Kurgan and the whole rest of the crew. I’d like to see Kastagier play a stronger roll vs just being known as Connor’s buddy who he shares some Boom Boom with and then takes a dirt nap. No Methos or other TV series characters to play a strong point in the movie with the exception of maybe a tie in to it all but I would not enjoy having Methos as Connor’s mentor vs Ramirez. It would not make sense for the character in my opinion and would ruin part of the old storyline for me.
Actor wise. Thomas Jane for Connor Macleod. Ramirez I havn’t really pinned someone to since I am a big fan of Sean Connery but someone who is charasmatic as Sean in the older mentor style. Kurgan I thought of the Jason Momoa as the actor for an updated Kurgan. He looks tough but as well he has played Conan recently and in my opinion has the look to a degree of a Kurgan type from that era. Kastagier has been a thought in my mind as well for a number of actors but Michael Jai White or Tyrese Gibson came to mind. Michael I think would fit a stronger roll but Ive been a fan of Tyrese since I watched him in Four Brothers. Although I would probably see Michael Jai White as a preferred actor if chosen in that line.
Yung Dol Kim I’d like to see an actual full asian actor this time. I have only seen the fight of Kurgan vs Yung Dol Kim once in all my years of watching Highlander and I think the guy was white or at least half asian. Many actors spring to mind for this.
As for the immortal Iman Fassil I havn’t put much thought to him yet but someone who looks like they could pull off a backflip or two and swing a blade will suffice. Doesn’t have to be a big name actor for this roll either since they were filler Immortals for Connor and Kurgan to fight.
We can’t forget about Rachel though. She was a large character that didn’t fully hit point till Endgame in my opinion and I would like to see someone play her and have her hold a little more weight in the flick as with Brenda Wyatt who we know will be his initial love interest for this film.
Course. Heather is the strongest love point to Connor and well I have many ideas for her. Alas some of my actors are losing my mindset right now as its late but I also would enjoy seeing a few guest appearences from Christopher as other characters such as Connor’s father and what not to kind of pay hommage back to the original.
A few tie points I’d like is to see some of what happened in Endgame hit into the remake. Like the stuff about Connor’s mother and all. Maybe not all the villians and Duncan but still.

  7. No one is better for Connor than VIGGO MORTENSEN. Viggo has leadership, swordskills and a kind of magic. He proves to be good in lone and reflexive character, with some kind of arrogance. Perfect for Connor.
RYAN RENOLDS WILL MAKE THE FILM A PIECE OF s***.

Hope for the best. Highlander fan, please spread this mensage.

  8. I know of an unknown actor who would love to portray Connor MacLeod, me, I may be 28, but so what?

  9. I’m not sure how I feel about the remake of Highlander.
I have probably watched all of the highlander series, the raven and the movies. I love them all except for the second movie.

But, I just.. I don’t know. They are remaking so much stuff lately.
Red Dawn, Total Recall, etc. Next thing you know, they’ll be remaking Chitty Chitty Bang bang, and Sound of Music and Mary Poppins.

Not to be a total geek girl about Highlander, but “There can be ONLY one.” That means ONE Connor, ONE Duncan, one Methos. etc.

I’m not sure how I am going to like the reboot of Highlander. But, we’ll see.

  10. Now look, Highlander was a great B-movie at best. Mediocre acting, half-assed editing, kickass soundtrack and Clancy Brown doing one of the worst performances of his career. But somehow all these things managed to amalgamate into a brilliant classic that every guy can watch happily and most girls can scratch there head as to why their men could ever have such poor taste in movies. That being said…

F*@# all of you involved. In a matter of 5 minutes I lost all the excitement I had when I heard there was going to be a remake. Here’s the conversation I had in my head just now:

“Oh, awesome! Introduce a whole new generation to the highlander franchise all us old dogs remember and love…. Whats that? Justin Lin? Of Fast and Furious “fame” is directing… Ok… I guess… Can’t wait for the film to be loaded with a homoerotic bromance and s***** cars…Neal Moritz is producing? The guy they get when they cant afford Micheal “piss explosions on everything” Bay? Well, at least he did 21 Jump Street… wait, no… n- Unbe-f*@#in-lievable. They’re getting the chick who scripted Twilight!?!?! I’m out!”

Thank you Hollywood for reminding me of a beloved movie I remember as a childhood favorite, telling me there’s a reboot and then $#!&ing all over everything. What else is going in the movie? Is there room for Tyler Perry to play 3 or 4 characters? Maybe just make it a 2 hour car commercial? How about making Ryan Reynolds the title character… *sigh* I must have blocked that part out… WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT!? Look, I like Ryan Reynolds as much as the next guy but he’s no Conner Macleod. Tom Jayne, possibly, but not Ryan reynolds. Maybe he’ll surprise us and be outstanding. Nothing would make me happier, but when it’s backed by the cancerous crew already assembled, I have little to no hope for this.
I never thought I’d have to place so much hope on Ryan Reynolds to carry a movie.
Hollywood should have just left it alone. No reboot necessary. There SHOULD be only one.

    • What is it with you guys and your childhood? You know Highlander isn’t exactly sacrosanct? I’m pretty sure the old B-movies, as you call them, will still exist, and be just as intact in your memory and collection as they were before any remake ever comes to fruition. The thing about when you were a kid, you didn’t give two s***ts about any of this information and just watched it without these ridiculous levels of pre-judgement and hand-wringing. If anything, you should try to grab onto that aspect of your childhood, and just watch it. In the end, nothing ever really happens to you. It’s not like those two hours of your life would have otherwise been when you discovered the cure for cancer, anyway.

  11. Kevin McKidd as Connor. Though I’d be fine with McAvoy as suggested above, or even Fassbender. Or, Hell, Daniel Craig. I read once that Lambert was originally cast because his eyes looked like they had seen centuries. Craig has that quality as well.

I don’t know if Neeson has the type of “timeless” charisma that Ramirez needs. Or the general joie du vivre and sense of humor Ramirez had. Maybe Branaugh? Viggo? Ciaran Hinds? James Purefoy? Or even Fassbender for this role.

The toughest one is the Kurgan. Who could even come close to being as frightening as Clancy Brown? Maybe Viggo for this role. Or Tom Hardy. Hardy might be perfect, actually.

  12. Why bother? The original Highlander doesn’t really need a remake! Save your money for an original project/idea.

    • Nothing -needs- a remake. But it’s fun to revitalize things, sometimes. In any event, originality doesn’t have anything to do with what subject you pick. A supposedly brand new idea could have been done to death, and a remake could be totally fresh and new. Originality doesn’t come from the subject. It comes from the execution.

  13. Say, I loved the show. I hope it comes to fruition. How about trying to recreate the new version in a futuristic mode. New planet, new gear, new design concepts. But base it on ancient traditions. I love all the ideas of new species but stay human. lol!

  14. If they trash Freddie Mercury’s song Hollywood will burn.

  15. As long as Queen’s soundtrack is included, I’d be okay with a remake. Liam Neeson in Sean Connery’s role. Up for grabs on Connor because their is a wealth of good actors. Queen is the constant here. :-)

  16. British actor Rob Kazinsky (East Enders, Pacific Rim, True Blood) as Connor. Relative unknown. He’d be perfect!
