‘Heroes’ Returning in 2015 as a 13-Episode Miniseries

Published 1 year ago by

Superheroes have ruled at the multiplex for the past decade, and comic book properties are hitting television in a big way, from the CW’s ongoing hit series Arrow and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to the upcoming Gotham, The Flash and Constantine. Before all this, NBC’s Heroes was arguably as instrumental to the dominance of superhero stories as Marvel’s Iron Man, Bryan Singer’s X-Men movies or Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins.

Heroes premiered to great acclaim in 2006, making stars out of the previously unknown Hayden Panettiere (who has gone on to star in ABC’s Nashville) and Zachary Quinto (who went on to play the young Spock in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot). The show followed a group of people who develop super powers, exploring the ways these powers corrupted or inspired them and the conflicts that arose in their wake. The show won an immediate cult following and exploded across popular culture, only to see ratings and critical reception tank hard, leading to cancellation after four seasons.

Still, that brilliant first season remains beloved by fans, and now we have a report from Deadline that creator Tim Kring is bringing Heroes back to the network as a 13-episode miniseries event. Titled Heroes: Reborn, the limited run is set to air in 2015, with all new characters and storylines to appear online in a digital series before the new series premieres. Watch the teaser trailer above.

As for whether or not any members of the original cast could return, NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke had this to say in the official press release:

“…we won’t rule out the possibility of some of the show’s original cast members popping back in.”

Furthermore, the show will be “appropriately shrouded in secrecy” as the 2015 air date approaches. The resurrection of Heroes comes soon after our first look at the next phase of Fox’s 24, which returns to the airwaves this May. We’ve recently detailed the reasons that everyone should really love reboots and remakes, and the return of an iconic show like Heroes with its original creator at the helm could really pound this point home.

On the other hand, Tim Kring – who went on to create Fox’s short-lived Touch - is credited as executive producer on all 79 episodes of Heroes, and arguably owns the lion’s share of the responsibility for how quickly Heroes appeared to jump the shark. Still, Kring has had plenty of time to reflect, and plans to “add to his original concept.”

Interestingly, we heard some similar news just under a year ago – a fifth season could have premiered exclusively on the Xbox, with very similar details, including “new stories and heroes, while mixing in cameos from the original series’ cast.” This is the real deal, though. Heroes was unique in the way it utilized the comic book structure – each season consisted of two main volumes, with many inter-connected story arcs (too many, eventually) – without drawing directly from any established property.

This 13-episode format also mirrors the current run of most cable series, a hint that NBC is attempting to prove that they can match Starz, AMC or HBO in quality. The network’s critically-acclaimed Hannibal (created by former Heroes writer Bryan Fuller) arguably does just that. Can Heroes really stand its ground in this post-Marvel and DC Cinematic Universe world?

What do you think, Screen Ranters? Heroes will return! Are you excited about this? Sound off in the comments!

  1. I completely agree with @evanzile. Please don’t leave us hanging, wondering what happened after season 4.

    • I think they are teasing us teasing us is Joking with us about the mini series of Heroes reborn badly is like silence us there will no more series of heroes so it didn’t worth the waiting so forget it

  2. I cant wait for this! I loved th original series and would love some more of the same writer as well! They should have Tim Kring make some other series, too. I, personally, think that would be awesome.

  3. Idk if I want to watch this or not, because I really loved the series and it really upset me that it got canceled, I don’t want any false hope of it returning to just be let down again. :((

    • I fell the same way.

  4. The first season was awesome it had the mystery of Lost and that was enough for me. But just like Lost it went spiraling down. Lost however menaged to get better at the end but heroes never really got back on track.

  5. when heroes reborn showing in tv and whats channel?

  6. I would be so excited to see this come back to life! after season 4 I was just left hanging and so disappointed that it didn’t continue!

  7. When in 2015?????? I just re watched all of the seasons on Netflix!!!!

  8. Didnt I see the same neon sign at the cancelled ending of Revolution? I hope this continuation is strong enough with the new actors to not get this attempt of the continuation of the story to continue to fail. There was no neon sign at the end of Chuck, Continuum, or Caprica, but atleast it looks like Continuum and Heros are comming back for now. At least they werent “Wonderland” productions.K.O.D. to a series appearanly.

  9. I don’t know. *SMH* I was so attached to the original show and the cast. I loved all of those characters and loved to hate Sylar. I felt real raw about how it ended. I don’t think I could get into this new rendition. Claire and Hiro were my favorites! I don’t think the new characters can compare. What if I took a chance on it and it ended the same way? Nah, man. I’m good without it.

  10. Well, I have mixed feelings. Tim created the series. Tim destroyed it.

So… what will Tim do this time? Honestly, I “just” wanted to see the potential of that first season to be exploited. I wanted a do-over. I know that it’s impossible, but Heroes will never touch the hype that it got in the beginning. It was so disappointing, it was like watching something beautiful dying at each episode.

I’m happy for this news, but it brings me bad memories.

  11. I loved the original series but I’m not interested in watching Heroes return if the cast is going to be completely different. Won’t be the same.

  12. YES!
I loved Heroes(even after it “jumped the Shark”)and i think its time it returned.
Thoug i would have liked to see the old Cast its still amazing news!

  13. Hurry up and release it already!!!

  14. just finished watching the hero seasons 1,2,3,and 4,…. I was so disappointed that the season finished , read it had been cancelled with such a cliff hanger…. but I am rapped there is going to be a season 5 and maybe more I cant wait for it to start… it will be awesome

  15. Heroes was a brilliant show. The multiple story arcs made it really engaging to watch. In my opinion it was the writer’s strike that killed it, it just shut down the show for months and it lost its momentum in what at the time was a very niche genre. Having said that they had better not leave fan’s hanging again!!! There needs to be a LAW that if you are making a film series (eg the golden compas, The Last Airbender etc) or TV series (eg Heroes, the bionic woman reboot) that you can’t even start making it unless you have enough money in reserve to complete the series/close stories if and when the show is cancelled. All multi part movies need to be shot all at once (eg the Lord of the rings and Hobbit) so that no matter what they will be released. It is just how it has to be and I don’t understand why it movie and TV making is allowed to continue without it!

  16. yes yes yes want to know what happens to all, but would like it more with the original cast waiting in Michigan for season 5
