‘Heroes’ Returning in 2015 as a 13-Episode Miniseries

Published 10 months ago by

Superheroes have ruled at the multiplex for the past decade, and comic book properties are hitting television in a big way, from the CW’s ongoing hit series Arrow and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to the upcoming Gotham, The Flash and Constantine. Before all this, NBC’s Heroes was arguably as instrumental to the dominance of superhero stories as Marvel’s Iron Man, Bryan Singer’s X-Men movies or Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins.

Heroes premiered to great acclaim in 2006, making stars out of the previously unknown Hayden Panettiere (who has gone on to star in ABC’s Nashville) and Zachary Quinto (who went on to play the young Spock in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot). The show followed a group of people who develop super powers, exploring the ways these powers corrupted or inspired them and the conflicts that arose in their wake. The show won an immediate cult following and exploded across popular culture, only to see ratings and critical reception tank hard, leading to cancellation after four seasons.

Still, that brilliant first season remains beloved by fans, and now we have a report from Deadline that creator Tim Kring is bringing Heroes back to the network as a 13-episode miniseries event. Titled Heroes: Reborn, the limited run is set to air in 2015, with all new characters and storylines to appear online in a digital series before the new series premieres. Watch the teaser trailer above.

As for whether or not any members of the original cast could return, NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke had this to say in the official press release:

“…we won’t rule out the possibility of some of the show’s original cast members popping back in.”

Furthermore, the show will be “appropriately shrouded in secrecy” as the 2015 air date approaches. The resurrection of Heroes comes soon after our first look at the next phase of Fox’s 24, which returns to the airwaves this May. We’ve recently detailed the reasons that everyone should really love reboots and remakes, and the return of an iconic show like Heroes with its original creator at the helm could really pound this point home.

On the other hand, Tim Kring – who went on to create Fox’s short-lived Touch - is credited as executive producer on all 79 episodes of Heroes, and arguably owns the lion’s share of the responsibility for how quickly Heroes appeared to jump the shark. Still, Kring has had plenty of time to reflect, and plans to “add to his original concept.”

Interestingly, we heard some similar news just under a year ago – a fifth season could have premiered exclusively on the Xbox, with very similar details, including “new stories and heroes, while mixing in cameos from the original series’ cast.” This is the real deal, though. Heroes was unique in the way it utilized the comic book structure – each season consisted of two main volumes, with many inter-connected story arcs (too many, eventually) – without drawing directly from any established property.

This 13-episode format also mirrors the current run of most cable series, a hint that NBC is attempting to prove that they can match Starz, AMC or HBO in quality. The network’s critically-acclaimed Hannibal (created by former Heroes writer Bryan Fuller) arguably does just that. Can Heroes really stand its ground in this post-Marvel and DC Cinematic Universe world?

What do you think, Screen Ranters? Heroes will return! Are you excited about this? Sound off in the comments!

  1. mini series, a big WTF!

  2. I love heroes! I just finished watching all four seasons and I’m very disappointed that I won’t be able to see a continuation from where the storyline ended, especially as Sylar was developing into a hero and Claire just outed herself to the newscast. Sigh… I hope they at least bring some of the same cast members into play.

  3. I was so excited when I heard this…until I learned its a reboot. Now a wound that closed with the semi appropriate conclusion of season 4 (it was something of a series finale) is made fresh and even worse than before. Seriously, sylar is finally a hero -I want to see more of the original cast in a new season that’s good not a new freaking show and cast.

  4. I find it disappointing the writers strike that Ended the original Heroes wasn’t mentioned. It’s not like the show fell off for no reason. Tim is hardly to blame. Quite a few shows sunk during that time

  5. I’m excited for heroes to return, I’ve just finished the four seasons. Although I’m sad to hear the original main cast probably won’t return with it. Claire just revealed herself to the world, so Hayden Panettiere has to return, I guess not. But a lot of happenings occured, that shouldn’t be left undealt with, as I’m sure they’ll be patched up somehow in some creative way. Hope they reconsider, I’d love to see the old characters back in action. Nevertheless, season 5 is something I’ll look forward to.

  6. I just finished the series and while it was a complex plot, I loved it nonetheless. I really connected with the characters, so I hope that cameos are made from the original cast. Save the cheerleader, save the world!

  7. The new HEROES show MUST have Masi Oka as Hiro Nakamura. The show really revolved all around him you know!

    • I dont know. The last two seasons really focused more on The Petrelli’s. Everything always somehow tied back to them. Especially the last season. But i do agree, they should deffinetly bring back Hiro. He was my favorite character by far. But whether they bring him back or not, im just hoping it turns out to be good nonetheless.

  8. i’m been waiting for long to lunch the season 5,and i;m hoping that benneth will still in the cast…i’m so excited..and i’m a big fan of heroes and many people here in the philippines wiating this episodes……..happy happy……

  9. i love heroes.. every season is great.. i love all characters…i want to see the same cast in next season also.. dont disappoint us with new characters and new story.. everyone want to continue that story from where u left

  10. Heroes is a wonderful movie,a must watch for everyone.av been waiting in anticipation for so long.am happy coz its finally back.i just hoped its gonna be same story, same cast.pls dnt disappoint us all.

  11. Crazy excited I just watched all 4 seasons as well and I must say i’m sadden that the same people won’t be in it and that we won’t see Sylar evolve into a hero or how the world acts knowing claire’s ability. All and all I can’t wait for Heros season 5!

  12. i think they need to start off where they ended it because the ending was horrible, we need to know what happened to the characters we actually knew of and followed through out the show then gradually incorporate more characters and make it more about them, and 1 more season? mini season? what the hell?

  13. Don’t make the same mistakes CW’s The Tomorrow People made! People LOVED the first four seasons of Heroes. Don’t fix what isn’t broken. People also loved The original The Tomorrow People, the 2nd remake of The Tomorrow People, but largely hated the 3rd remake. Sometimes, bringing back what is familiar is what people love and want – even if its only some of the original. Above all, keep the plot moving. CW’s The Tomorrow People’s number one flaw is that they belaboured the point f o r e v e r! Jedikiah should have died and been buried after the 5th show. The Tomorrow People should have became The Tomorrow People after the 5th show and should have become more intelligent and superior and not so “violent meets teenage angst”. The original show was intelligent, for kids, but treated kids as if they had an adult IQ where Science and logic was concerned. It was brilliant! My friend says that his fave part of Heroes was that “they WERE normal and forced to cope with their abilities and deciding waht they WANTED to do. And the government trying to control them. There were so many story arcs., intertwining each other, that I felt like they were predestined sometimes. My favorite Hero was Hiro. he could time travel, travel anywhere in space on Earth.” (direct quote from his typing). Thanks!

  14. I just finished watching all 4 seasons, even though I heard I was going to be very disappointed with the end because the show got canceled with out really ending. Left off with more of a to be continued. I continued to watch it and absolutely loved it. Super sad to hear they will not continue with the same story line. After reading all these comments of faithful followers I still don’t understand how they wouldn’t listen. Wish there was something we could do :(

  15. YEEESSSSS!!!! Heroes is coming back, I’ve waited a long time for this, I love Heroes!!!! But why a miniseries??? :(

  16. I can never explained how much I have love this series I been watching it sense I was 8 and today almost 18 I have had the prprivilege to finish watching all four seasons it may seems like a long time but thats just how much I love this series and how motivated I have been to finish watching the only series that motivates me to think from the ordinary to the extraordinary
