Put aside the rumors of True Blood star Joe Manganiello as a frontrunner to play Clark Kent in the next Superman film as Zack Snyder and co. have found someone else to play their Kryptonian hero.

Henry Cavill (The Tudors, Stardust) has been officially cast as Clark Kent/Superman in Superman: Man of Steel. Warner Bros. confirmed the news this morning along with Zack Snyder’s comments on Cavill as his leading star.

“In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen. I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.”

The 27 year-old Cavill, while relatively unknown compared to fellow DC superhero actors Christian Bale and Ryan Reynolds, is a growing star and certainly has the look to play a younger Clark Kent, a much younger Clark Kent compared to the rumors of 40 year-old Jon Hamm of Mad Men fame playing the iconic character.

Cavill can be seen later this year playing Theseus in Immortals, starring alongside Mickey Rourke, John Hurt and Kellan Lutz and was a key character in The Tudors for its entire run, working with Jonathan Rhys Meyers.

The story of the Superman reboot won’t be a full origin story and may differ from the comic books significantly in that respect. The story originates from the minds of Christopher Nolan, who was previously set to produce the project, and comic book movie veteran, David S. Goyer. Goyer is penning the script for Zack Snyder.

As for what the story of the new Superman movie will be about, Snyder explains it has no ties to previous franchise films and is not based on any specific comic book story.

“As I have already explained, the film will focus on early days of Superman, so there will be no links with other films. This is not a remake then. Similarly, although I still can not talk about the script, I can assure you that this new Superman will not be based on a comic book in particular.”

What do you think of Cavill as the new Clark Kent and who should play Lois Lane?

    • Good god, why does everyone want Tom Welling?! I can’t imagine a bigger mistake. If this story is truly supposed to be a fresh, unique take on the Superman story, casting someone who has already played a young Superman would completely destroy the effect. It’s like saying we should steal Adam West from the sixties and port him up to modern day so he could play Batman in Nolan’s version.

      • This all sucks!!! This guy looks NOTHING LIKE SUPERMAN!!!!! Theyre gonna stuff it up AGAIN! DAMMIT!

Let me tell you all something you should already know…. Superman in the original comics was ALWAYS musclebound like Schwarzenegger. Every Superman movies has had some weedy geeky guy playing the Man of Steel. All they gotta do is can this guy and go on the hunt for…. BODYBUILDERS!!!!! Idiots. They just dont get it. When i read a superman comic im ready about the worlds finest. Now when i watch Superman its a case of the World’s Weakest!

Come on guys…. I know Im right. I wouldve been perfect to look for the right cast but they ALWAYS get these executives who dont know ANYTHING about the man. This is another sad day for the Man of Steel!

        • You should feel really stupid now.

          • LMAO the dude was jacked as hell

  2. Does this guy look anything like Superman? NO!!! Miscasting superman dooms the whole thing. Why can’t the idiots in hollywood ever get this right? Read a comic for crap’s sake.

  3. Henry Cavill is only 6 feet 1 inch. He is too small for the part.

    • My point exactly

  4. It should be Tom Wellings, He has been clark kent for ten years and should became superman in movie along with smallville cast in it. it would be a great for smallville fans!

    • @ Ron

Hopfully Tom Welling will get the role of Superman in Justice League & solo films that follow from there. Tom Welling, or Brandon Routh id like to see for that role. Christopher Reeve did pass the torch to Tom Welling & Reeve’s wife gave Routh her blessing for his work with Superman Returns.

  5. Firstly I think its about time again to regain the frontline with this superman flick which has been idly begging to be produced. Superman returns was a flop because the character never grew, the story was expected and no action/enemies to fight except same ol’ Lex Luthor. This time around, I don’t think I care about Henry Cavill being Superman…Whoever they take to cast as superman doesn’t matter; what matters is what they turn him (the actor) to be in the movie and how well and deeper he’s into driving the superman character bringing out extraordinary actions we’ve never seen before and pushing us to the edges of our seats. The story line is also very important as to win a significant position in the box office as well as in the minds of those who grew up with the superman franchise. They should put in consideration the younger generation who are still just thrilled with the TOM WELLING’s SMALLVILLE version of Superman. In as much as Superman still remains popular, they have toyed enough with his image dragging back and i believe they this is the chance for a “turn around” and “nitro boost” forward.
Secondly, Why in heaven’s name is Marvel Comic movies so fascinating and breath-taking with their productions while Detective Comic Movies remain so appalling. I thought Green Lantern was going to be a block buster but it again hit the rocks with so many imitations from Spiderman. Arrrrgh! They are a lot of other presentable ways to produce a story line….DC should wake up…they are losing their fans.
