Say what you will about Zack Snyder and Man of Steel, but the casting for the film has been pretty great so far  – Henry Cavill (the man himself), Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Russell Crowe (Jor El), Kevin Costner (Pa Kent), Diane Lane (Ma Kent), Lawrence Fishburne (Perry White) and more.

Today, Henry Cavill talked about what it was like to put the suit on for the very first time, as well as his desire to play James Bond if ever the opportunity arose. Also, check out the first pictures of Cavill’s new look – sans costume, of course – as Superman/Clark Kent.

Courtesy of Total Film, Cavill talked about preparing for the role of Superman:

“I’m on 5000 calories a day… You’ve got to eat protein first, then a little bit of carbs…you’ve gotta keep your hunger levels going. I’m training two and a half hours a day, pushing my body beyond its normal limits, putting on a lot of muscle mass and just making myself look like Superman.”

On putting on the costume for the first time [Update: An official image of Henry Cavill’s Superman costume has been released by Warner Bros., check it out here]:

“It’s extremely cool. There’s no other feeling like it. […] They just put it on, I turned around and look in the mirror and you can’t really play it cool – you sort of guffaw and laugh. I thought ‘OK, holy hell, this is real, it’s not a joke anymore. This is it…you’re doing it, you’re right in the middle of it.’”

On the role of James Bond, which he was up for when Daniel Craig was cast:

“That would be absolutely amazing. If they approached me on that I’d leap at the opportunity to do it. But that’s of course well away for the time being…”

What Daniel Craig’s James Bond lacked in brunette follicles, he more than made up for with rugged masculinity, an essential attribute for any portrayal of James Bond. While it would be unfair to suggest that Cavill is completely lacking in ruggedness and/or masculinity, he’s far more known for his pretty boy looks – which is probably what won him the starring role in Man of Steel, at least in part.

British nationality notwithstanding, Cavill is pretty spot-on for Superman – or at least a version of Superman, as there are many.  They certainly could’ve done far worse, too. Of the potential candidates for the role – including Armie Hammer (The Social Network), Ian Somerhalder (The Vampire Diaries), and Joe Manganiello (True Blood) – Cavill was by far the best.

What are your feelings on Cavill as Superman? Good choice? Bad choice? Would you have preferred someone else? Let us know in the comments.

Man of Steel hits theaters July 14, 2013.

  1. I cannot wait to see Henry Cavill step into the Superman suit and get ready to come out next year in theatres. By the way its 2013 not 2012 Its moved ahead.

  2. I am a huge fan of Laurence Fishburne, but when I saw that they’re having him play Perry White, I had a “WTF” moment. It’s just…not right.

  3. Even though they’re ignorant comments, and they are totally stupid. Shouldnt we still have freedom of speech?

Dave Chapelle is TOTAL RACIST with his humor for example, and everyone seems to praise him for it….

    • How about not being such a b**** and wait to see what the movie actually looks like and it looks good!

  4. where are the trunks??? here we go again screwing with things that don’t need to be messed with!!! Can the man of steel please catch a break please?? HE’S NOT THE ONE THAT’S BROKEN. The costume doesn’t need CHANGING!!! your stories just f***ing SUCK!!! Thank you SMALLVILLE for listening and giving us the fans what we were waiting for!! F*** you wb! how about you make a movie for the fans and not the dollars. As for the cast? Everyone but Kevin Costner and Diane Lane go the f*** home… you’re being replaced. PS if that IS cavil in the suit he makes a terrible superman.

    • tom…

Decaf is the right choice for you. It really is.

Oh, and I happen to agree with just about everything you said.

      • …that is: DISAGREE!!!

        Sigh…I hate typing.

  5. Ok so like somebody previously said “gritty” isn’t better. And I agree I’d love to see Supe come into the mainstream again back when Christopher Reeves did it. But Cavill from the looks doesn’t bring the boy scout attitude that Superman is. Yes Superman is a powerful being but he’s a guy you can believe in, that you know that would always be there for you in peril. And Cavill doesn’t display that attitude or demeanor that’d he’d even give a care about a random parkstroller. He looks like an uncaring person to put it likely. I’m all for new blood but this new blood is “not” what is needed. And Snyder as a director? Yes all should have a chance but his only claim to fame is 300. And he’s not going to have that success with this film. Every Superhero now these days needs the “Nolan” treatment. Just because you make it “serious” and “gritty” doesn’t mean a guaranteed success. Stick to the subject matter Hollywood. Afterall that’s what made the stories successful not your ignorant perception of such. Oh and Daniel Craig is a great Bond, but Michael Fassbender would bring back that Sean Connery charm, I’m out!

  6. If a Brit can play Superman, then I want to see an American as James Bond, and I want to see Will Smith. Let’s see what the UK says about that one!

    • Ummm, Robert Downey, Jr., an American, IS playing a British icon…Sherlock Holmes. Thus, your attempted “cleverness” falls amusingly flat.

  7. Wow… 1) The role should go to the MOST QUALIFIED: Cavill looks, walks and talks the role. It doesn’t matter if he’s British – He’ll make a great Superman.
    2) Superman 2? Why because it has Zod and Faora in it? Okay so then most Superman comics are all rip-off’s of Superman 2? I’m not thrilled with using the same villian AGAIN either, but we haven’t seen even a second of the movie yet, so maybe you should try to keep an open mind.
    3) Lawrence Fishburn will do fine as Perry White. “I am not anti-any-ethnic-background” then why do you have a problem with it?
    4) Superman creator Joe Shuster was actually born in CANADA and moved to the US at the age of 16. Fact. So Super-Fans; couple that fact, with the fact that the Fortress is in the North Pole and Supe’s has a Canadian Address. That’s right American’s, I said Superman is half Canadian… COME AND GET ME!!! LOL
    5) This movie looks great so far. Solid cast, and solid ideas to bring something new to the worlds first Superhero. Just realax and wait for the movie THEN come to your conclusions.

  8. I think he its fine. I believe the passion of the Christ actor would have been a little more accurate (also on workout routine of course ) but not happy with costume revamp. Needs a belt.

  9. Ok Henry Cavil as Clark Kent/Superman = Great choice
Lawrence Fishburne as Perry White that’s like putting in Wil Smith as J. Jonah Jameson but hey we’ll see how he does I mean the made the Kingpin who was originally white now black so forgive me if I sound racist I don’t mean to be I think Lawrence Fishburne and Wil Smith are great actors.

    Now for the suit:
    1) to scaly and armor like, I know the movie is called The Man Of Steel but that is based on his density physical structure not his suit and instead of the rich blue we have all gotten used to seeing now we have a faded “oops washed my suit one to many times hope no one notice” type of blue and bracer come on now since when? I remember a time when at a glance you can tell between Superman and Batman now there just making it tougher to tell the two apart because the look so similar in the way of being dark, grungy and armor like.
    2) I know we all have herd this before where or where are the red briefs and yellow belt,(the oval buckle NOT the S shield buckle of Brandon Ruth’s)? I swear these guys forget at times kids will be watching this movie as well cause as it stand now the focal point in regards to his suit is more towards the crotch area hence the need for a belt or briefs or both, not to mention the continues absences of the yellow S shield on his cape. For those of you who may know and those who may not his suit has a personal value as well for you see with all the universal knowledge sent to him by Jor-El he was also sent with three cloth blankets (Blue,Red and Yellow)which in turn would make up his suit on a more tangible thought think about it Krypton was blue and it’s sun was red,Earth is blue and it’s sun is yellow the suit basically is the unification of the two worlds.
3)Henry Cavil I know earlier I said he was a great choice and I will stand by this however appearance wise I don’t know I mean Superman was the type of guy no matter how bad you were he always try’s to see and or bring out the good in you he’s see the world in an almost naive way Cavil’s Superman gives off the appearance that you done wrong now I’m gonna bust you up in a more arrogant to border line intimidating way as to say yeah I’m Superman you know it/fear me I am alien.

Finally the best current costume in my opinion is the one that Tom Welling of Smallville (or as I call it Smallville “the What if” )wore suit was blue even though a dark blue but it was richer and it stood out more not to mention the belt and red brief and finally the S shield in the perspective places chest and cape.
