It has only just been revealed that Hellboy is getting a reboot, and it appears Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen could start filming in just a few months. Guillermo Del Toro and Ron Perlman helped launch the original franchise that was more of a cult hit, than anything else. Even though the duo got to make two installments, the closing chapter was never meant to be. It seemed that Hellboy's future died with them, but it actually has given birth to a new, R-rated reboot.

For the reboot, Stranger Things' David Harbour will be taking up the mantle of the demon child and has been paired with director Neil Marshall. The announcement of a star/director pairing along with writers, producers, and more established that this is farther along than many other newly announced projects, but they are apparently very far along in the planning process and have a start date in mind.

Following all the news for the Hellboy reboot, THR's Borys Kit shared the tentative plans for filming. Reportedly, the producers are aiming for the reboot to start production this September, which is only four months away. However, this is just a goal at this point and not set in stone.

Hellboy

If Hellboy does begin filming this September, it will be one of the quickest turnarounds for a major production in recent memory. Unlike most superhero/comic book based films, this reboot was not announced years in advance and has been quite the surprise. Instead, the producers have clearly been working on this in secret and could be very far along. While it could be some time before this is proven to be true or false, a September start could allow for the reboot to hit theaters late 2018 - possibly lining up perfectly for a big Halloween debut.

Even though this may be the goal of the producers, there are still a few steps that need to be completed before production can begin. The script is currently being written by Christopher Golden and Andrew Cosby, but is not yet finished. Cosby recently teased that the current draft takes a darker, horror tone, which could better represent the comics by Mike Mignola that these films are based on. Once the script is complete, they must then finish casting and round out those that will support Harbour's Hellboy, scout shooting locations, and possibly name a release date. Thankfully, there is still plenty of time for these steps to be completed, but most will agree it is better for these to progress naturally than to rush and meet this hypothetical start.
