Guillermo del Toro somehow managed to create the perfect live-action adaptations of Mike Mignola’s lovable red demon in Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Even more impressive is how one of Hollywood’s hardest working actors, Ron Perlman, brought to life the title character whose true name is Anung Un Rama.

Both Hellboy and its sequel were well-received by critics, loved by fans and did well at the box office, considering their budgets, casts and the lack of mainstream knowledge of the comics for which they are based on. The only question we’ve all wondered for the last two years is when Hellboy 3 is coming and whether del Toro and the franchise’s unique poster boy, Ron Perlman, will be back.

The last we heard from Guillermo del Toro, back in the summer after he dropped out of The Hobbit, was that he was absolutely wants to do Hellboy 3 but that he is very hesitant about serving the fate of Hellboy and concluding the trilogy. He’s also one of the busiest men in Hollywood, having a large line-up of upcoming projects on his schedule, and he’s also playing in the video game industry with his upcoming horror title, inSane.

As for star Ron Perlman, Yahoo interviewed the veteran talent while he was working the press rounds for his role in Nicolas Cage’s Season of the Witch and managed to squeeze in a few questions about Hellboy 3. To start, Yahoo touches on Perlman’s consistent ability to play strong supporting characters instead of the lead, but that in Hellboy – with heavy prosthetics, no less – he’s the star. What was that experience like for him?

“I felt a little bit of pressure when we were setting out to do Hellboy I, which completely dissipated the moment we all walked on to the set. It’s really hard to feel pressure when you’re around (Mexican director) Guillermo (del Toro), because he makes for a set where it’s okay to be stupid, it’s okay to do things that are absolutely wrong.”

Is Hellboy 3 happening?

“I think he (del Toro) is moving in another direction, so if there’s another one to be made I’m not sure what his input would be. I would be more than happy to make a third one. He would have to be involved on some level, because he always thought of it as a trilogy … The take that Guillermo had on finishing the trilogy was epic, and if it doesn’t get made it would be unfortunate because it was always designed to have this big finish and I would love to see it being filmed.”

If Columbia Pictures pushes forward with a third Hellboy installment, there’s no doubt that del Toro would be involved in one way or another. He’s passionate about the character and fans can agree that it’s essential to have him help close out the story. If not directing, he would certainly produce and help structure the story.

While at the moment there is no movement on another Hellboy, Perlman still believes there’s a chance del Toro would come back for Hellboy 3. I hope both are back and that the trilogy is concluded by them.

  1. This needs to happen… ill be so bummed if it doesn’t, I loved the first 2 movies

    • i so want hell boy 3 to see his kids 1 and 2 to find out if he actually goes through with destroying humanity or saves it

  2. I want this to be made, but I don’t think it will. At least not with Del Toro directing.

  3. Del Toro has to have a major part in this if it’s going to happen. I can’t imagine Hellboy without him. Of course I have become extremely pro Del Toro over the last 4 or 5 years so my opinion is rather one sided…

  4. Del Toro needs to come back for Hellboy 3 on some level, either directing or producing, prefer he directs, Loved the first 2 movies and would more than down for a 3rd.

  5. We’d be more than happy to see Hellboy 3.

And I didn’t know Columbia was making it.

  6. Don’t make it in 3D and I’m there!

  7. If it’s not so slap sticky like the second was then I’d be on board for a third installment. And YES EVERYONE needs to come back…. Except for Tom Manning. And maybe another apperence by Rasputon.

  8. i got a question for hellboy fans: how close to the source material (comics) did # 1+2 stay ?

i didn’t really like hellboy that much idk why but it felt like it was missing something.

  9. I thought Del Toro said that Perlman was the holdup, because he didn´t wanna have to go through all that makeup again..

    • I think that’s Mickey Rourke in Sin City 2 you might be thinking of

    • I read that too. Ron was the one who didn’t want to do 3. Glad he changed his mind.

Any word on Sons of Anarchy returning?

  10. Hell Yes! Now that’s what I’m talking about.

  11. If they make a 3rd, it should be based on the “conqueror worm” storyline!

  12. i would love for this to be made

  13. Mighnola Hellboy is far superior than the Del Toro Hellboy. I would much rather wait for the death of Hellboy in the hands of Mignola than Del Toro’s bastardization.

  14. 1st no 3D, and two, every trilogy that got a new director has failed. So I am willing to wait.

    • Of course!

  15. I want Hell Boy 3.

  16. As sad as I would be to see the movie without GDT, I would be even sadder to see no movie period. There are plenty of decent directors out there and if they respect his vision it would be better than no movie at all.

  17. I loved both flicks, and thought in the original there were a number of scenes that were startlingly, and surprisingly, beautiful. And I write this as an evanglical pastor/film lover who was originally put off by a movie called “HELLboy”. (I was completely unfamiliar w/ the comic book so didn’t really know what to expect). I only saw the first film in pieces when it broadcast on the tube, and at some point realized what an inspiring (honestly!) and highly entertaining piece of work it was – at which point I watched the whole thing in one sitting. Hopes for a # 3 sound too iffy for me – I’d rather see a threequel NOT be made than have one put together by the wrong people or w/ a thin storyline. If Del Toro and Perlman can catch lightning in a bottle one more time, however, count me in.

  18. It would be a shame to not complete it in my mind if you start something you should finish it or that’s wrong many people are waiting for the trilogy to end because the second kinda ended on a cliff hanger let. Let that sink in

  19. The villains could be Baba Yaga and Herman Von Klempt

  20. I enjoy the cartoons Ron does on the series. Better then nothing right? Also WHY no 3D? lol if its done right do it. Just dont go all jack happy with it.

  21. Only a little familiar with the comics, but they pretty clearly were setting up for a final confrontation with Rasputin and a final decision for Hellboy between his fate and the life he’s made with Selma Blair. I hope they get a chance to make it.

  22. Yes do it. Hellboy has to destroy the Earth. DUUU HAAAAS

  23. I hope they make hell boy 3 I love one and two a lot I would to see what klds look like and more big time

  24. I need another hellboy movie. The ending of the second one was such a cliffhanger that it needs a proper ending. Hellboy needs to see his kids and then fight one hell of a battle and either die saving his family or live happily fighting evil and raising kids. Plus I cannot wait to see if the kids are little hellboy’s, or they have pyrokensis like Liz, or both. Make another movie, oh and Del Toro has to be involved in some way.
