‘Hell on Wheels’ Season 3 Delayed as Showrunner Drops Out

Hell on Wheels Season 3 Delay The Preacher ‘Hell on Wheels’ Season 3 Delayed as Showrunner Drops OutFans of AMC’s brutal revisionist western Hell on Wheels had much to celebrate earlier this week. Despite a significant drop in viewership during season 2, AMC announced that it had renewed the series for another run of ten episodes.

Just days after that well-received announcement, a new press release states that AMC has temporarily suspended pre-production of Hell on Wheels’ season 3, after the departure of its main showrunner.

EW reports that John Shiban, the former writer/producer who was appointed Hell on Wheels showrunner, has dropped out of the production. Shiban issued a statement that cited no specific reason for his exit; a concurrent statement by AMC and production companies Entertainment One and Endemol says that Shiban left as the result of a, “personal decision.” So far, it appears that the split was sudden but amicable; Shiban praises the Hell on Wheels creative team as a, “. . . wonderful group of very talented people.”

Without John Shiban at the helm, Hell on Wheels finds itself lacking a single creative voice to guide the new season. As such, AMC has declared season 3 of the series on hold until Shiban’s replacement can be found. According to Entertainment Weekly, previous showrunners Joe and Tony Gayton remain as creative consultants but have not been considered to return to the series’ main chair. No names were shared as possible candidates for the top spot.

Hell on Wheels Season 3 Delay The Swede ‘Hell on Wheels’ Season 3 Delayed as Showrunner Drops OutThough this is certainly disheartening news for anyone clamoring for new episodes of Hell on Wheels, it may only be a slight bend in the tracks. AMC and its production companies have shown a knack for attracting solid talent. If anyone can reel in a new creative voice to guide Hell on Wheels – and do so quickly – it’s the same people who have shown great turnaround time for shows like The Walking Dead.

That said, one can’t help but wonder how this will affect the eventual scope and substance of the show itself. If Entertainment One and Endemol choose a showrunner outside the current Hell on Wheels creative team, the unfamiliar influence of this new voice could radically alter the series’ future. The previous choice of show veteran Shiban indicates that this is not a likely outcome, but everything is more or less up in the air at this point. Anything can happen, and this might lead to a very different sort of direction for the soot-caked western.

Hell on Wheels is still scheduled to begin production in spring of 2013, but its actual air date has yet to be determined.

  1. best western show since Deadwood. Love it! So glad Common is in it! I want more!

  2. It is the best western since Clint Eastwood and the spaghetti westerns. Cullen Bohanan is such eye candy He gives Clint a run for his money. He is the new Clint Eastwood of the westerns.

  3. I love all the characters on Hell on Wheels. Yes, please keep this show on and find that person that can make this come alive again. Let’s see what happens when Bohannon finally defeats Durant. Bring back Lily Bell, she and Bohannon had great chemistry and Ava is such a super woman with all she has been through. Does Elam and Ava get back together? Do they finally defeat that ole Seward? What about the baby that went back to NY does she come back or does Ava and/or Elam go get her? Oh, don’t leave this show open like this! Please, Please keep this on the air. I’ve looked for the episode 36, I think it is. It should have aired Oct. 12 in the Springfield, Missouri area. Once a good western and great music, don’t let it go now, Please.

  4. I am happy they kill off Lily. Cullen might of been infatuated with her but she was hardly a strong female lead. I found her bed jumping distasteful, especially sleeping with a married old man. Cullen needs a real tough lady. I hope they bring in a strong female lead to contend with Cullen’s character.

  5. Will there be a season 4? PLEASE! I’m in love with this show.

    I loved every ep.

  6. Please let there’s another season watch is perfect

  7. Just like Deadwood, we have a great show with some guts to it and the “creative” writer can’t finish the job. All the money these people make and they still quit. All the people employed with this series and all of us fans that wait from one season to the next are effected. It just dropped off in the middle of so many situations, just like Deadwood, leaving faithful fans hanging. I hope saying that someone needs to get their act together isn’t the same as being a personal attack…but really?

  8. Pleas bring Hell On Wheels Back!!!!!!!!!!From when the show starts till the end I caint leave the room It is one of the best shows on t.v. The Walking Dead Now that is a show that goes no were. I s a Dead Show but it seems to have everybody watch it. I hope and Pray that they can find wht they need for the show and get it back on the air.

  9. All I can say is I love the show…bring it back as soon as you find your replacement and let’s get this back on the air soon, before it’s to late…thank you…

  10. I enjoy hell on wheels soooo much. Waiting for the next season. Waiting. Waiting

  11. when and where can I watch season 3??

  12. I would hate to see this show disappear. It is the best Western I have seen in a long time. I can’t wait each week to see what’s going on. I have been wondering what happened. I used to record it each week just in case something kept me from it. I want more

  13. PLEASE,PLEASE bring “He’ll On Wheels” back ……. one of the best shows on TV!

  14. Hell on Wheels is a great epic… waiting to see more.. It’s the best show I’ve seen in quite awhile. Fix the problem and get “rolling.” We’ ve got a race on, yes?

  15. Genuinely when someone doesn’t be aware of afterward its
up to other visitors that they will assist, so here it happens.

  16. Love this program, but taking way to long for the next season. Get on with it already.

  17. Eagerly awaiting Saturday at 9 for new season. I know it’s going to rock. Thanks amc…writers, producers…

  18. Hell on Wheels is a great series, The acting is superb, but unfortunately poor writing will probably lead to the shows demise. I’m sure I am not the first, nor do I want to beat a dead horse, but Elam (Common)? Come on, really? that’s the best you all could come up with? I mean I didn’t go to script college, but scripts 101 had to have something about the demise of a lead character. Now, whether or not the character is revived or not may be to little to late. don’t be surprised if this is the end. This rant has nothing to do with the loss of Common, Its more so for the loss of a great show. Its going to be a shame. If its not to late WAKE UP!!

  19. Elam is coming back? Right? I think he also drives the show. No complaints about the overall writting my wife and I as well as friends are hooked. Bring Elam back maybe he was knocked for aome time didn’t the Indians find him maybe the Medicine man is treating him. What a great series!

  20. Are you kidding me. I like the walking dead but, hell on wheels! Awsome…

  21. Get with it and keep writing and filming and kill off the Nasty mayor. Have Bohanen ahoot him between the eyea or better yet throw a noose around his neck onto the horse aaddle and smack the horse in the as as he is drug through downtown Cheyenne. Show Bohanen’s new Dredge and how they get through or over the mountain!

  22. America needs more shows like hell on wheels, somewhat educational and yet what it use to be like in the west. America needs to slow down, relax and enjoy life. Not be so dependent on technology. Western lover, amen to hell on wheels I want more!

  23. Finally, a show we look forward to watching! Please keep it running!
