Some movies wear plots quite clearly in their titles. For instance, the first trailer for the upcoming Hell Baby seems to confirm that the film is exactly as it says on the tin. When expectant parents Vanessa and Jack buy a massively haunted New Orleans mansion, they’re oblivious to all the signs telling them to stay.

Vanessa soon falls under the house’s infernal spell, causing her baby to become the monstrosity of the movie’s title – not to mention the target of an elite squad of Vatican exorcists.

Hell Baby comes to us from directors Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon – both of Reno 911! The movie stars Leslie Bibb (Zookeeper), Rob Corddry (Warm Bodies), Keegan Michael Key (Key and Peele), and Paul Scheer (Rapturepalooza). Garant and Lennon also have significant onscreen roles.

There’s definitely more comedy than horror in the first preview for this particular horror-comedy. While there are few chuckles to be had, there are also more than a fair share of groans to go around, too – so much so that it reminds one uncomfortably of previous horror spoof A Haunted House. Such a dire comparison does not bode well

This said, Garant and Lennon are both comedy veterans who have proven themselves time and again in ensemble casts (heck, Lennon even made a scene-stealing cameo in The Dark Knight Rises as Bruce Wayne’s exasperated doctor). If they can overcome the spoof clichés and intensely silly Italian accents, Hell Baby may end up being a true comedy sleeper.

Hell Baby will become available via video-on-demand services on July 25th and will enter a limited theatrical run on September 6th, 2013.
