New information regarding the on-again/off-again He-Man movie reboot, Masters of the Universe, hasn’t exactly been flying at a whirlwind pace. In fact, the project has been in a serious state of flux over the past three years, as two directors were rumored to be attached – John Stevenson (Kung Fu Panda) and Timur Bekmambetov (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) – and the entire project moved from Warner Bros studios to Sony Entertainment.

Last year a Masters of the Universe script written by Justin Marks (Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li) was scrapped and writers Alex Livtak and Michael Finch (Predators) were brought on board by Sony to pen a new script. Writing a script for a massive project like this must take a really long time, because 15 months later, the pair still haven’t turned anything in for review.

However, in a recent interview with online magazine Crosswalk, Sony Vice President DeVon Franklin gave a quick update on the status of the He-Man script:

“One of other things I’m really excited about is we’re doing a reboot of the 1980s franchise Masters of the Universe. The He-Man franchise. Very excited about that. Should have that script very soon. I’m praying that we can start figuring out how we’re going to make it.”

Very soon” really isn’t a lot to go on, but producer Todd Black (Seven Pounds) told us to check back in one to six months and they should have an update by then. If it does indeed take Litvak and Finch close to 20 months to write a script, then fans of the He-Man franchise will expect nothing short of a Citizen Kane-type story.  Even though the film is based on a toy line, that doesn’t mean it can’t have a great story – and as we found out a couple of weeks ago with Green Lantern, a cohesive story is essential to any film, regardless of how pretty it looks onscreen.

With 130 episodes of He-Man cartoons, plus an additional 93 episodes of She-Ra cartoons to draw inspiration from, Litvak and Finch should have no trouble putting together a great story filled with lots of intriguing characters. To help them and Sony out a bit, here are a few things to include and not include in a Masters of the Universe reboot:

  • Don’t rely heavily on CGI for every single costume (ex: Green Lantern).
  • Don’t try to tell the entire history of every character in one sitting – stretch it out over multiple films so audiences can get to know and love each character.
  • Do include fan-favorite characters such as Man-At-Arms, Battle Cat, Mer-Man and Orko.
  • Do keep the entire movie set in Eternia – Audiences have seen the “fish out of water” story of bringing cartoon characters into the modern world too much (ex: the original Masters of the Universe movie, Smurfs, Alvin and the Chipmunks)

Other than the writers, no one else is officially attached to the Masters of the Universe project (or Grayskull as it is tentatively called), but as we get closer to seeing a finished script we expect that to change.

What other tips would you give Sony regarding the making of Masters of the Universe?

  1. man I’ve been waiting for this movie for such a long time.

  2. watch “the dark crystal” for inspiration. a good fantasy land movie without cgi crap.
use real big men, not skinny guys wearing big weapons. let’s use this movie to discover the next arnold.

  3. One cartoon movie that I would LOOOOOVE to see made is “Thundar, the Barbarian”. That cartoon was so deep with it’s apocalyptic story and esoteric/hidden sub plots AND it had a dark tone that would most deffinately work well as a scifi/action movie. The interesting thing about how adult some of the story arc was and how it speaks of a moving planet(Nibiru/Planet X) that throws earth of its eliptical axis and causes catastophies all over the earth;pretty much destroying most of the planet and killing 95% of the population, leaving behind a few survivors and mutants and sending earth back to the dark ages. For a kid’s cartoon it was pretty edgy.

  4. Very cool news I hope this gets made. I love 16bits take on Orko, sounds interesting to make him very mysterious and dark or whatever. As far as casting goes, thats where Im scared. No Angelina Jolie’s, The Rock, C.Tatum or any other dudes we’ve seen in MARVEL movies or whatever. Find an unknown like they did for the CONAN re-boot and think OUTSIDE THE BOX. I thought the original story of “He-Man” was about Skeletor being the hero until he failed to uphold himself. Maybe start with how Skeletor dropped the ball and rivaled the King and Queen of Eternia (Prince Adams parents) before recruiting beast man and mer-man. Exciting stuff though.

  5. I would also like to see Moss Man, Triclops and Trap Jaw!

  6. Id like to see MAN-E-FACES and of course Battle Cat.

  7. All I have to say is Helena Bonham Carter should be Evil Lynn. She looks the part!!

  8. I would like to see Warwick Davis (from leprachaun movies),or Vern Troyer (mini-me from austin powers movies) to portray Orko. Write funny yet clever dialuoge & use special effects such as an animitronic puppet. As for Evil-lyn I could see Megan Fox. I think with the right direction, she should have no problem pulling that off. Then I could see Hayley Atwell or Alice Eve as Teela. Maybe Sam houston from ghost rider to portray Man-at-arms/General Duncan. The actor who played blackheart to portay Trap-Jaw. Vin Diesel to portray Stratos. WWE wrestler The big show to portray Ram-Man. Helen mirren to portray the sorceress. Jason mamoa to portray Mer-Man. John Malkovich to portray Keldor/Skeletor. Dwane ‘the rock’ Johnson to portray Tri-Klops. Randy Coture to portray Beast-Man. Armie Hammer from the social network movie to portray Prince Adam/He-man. Wow..plus there’s even more characters & back history that I can see how the budget could sky rocket to another stratosphere. If they do it right, it could entertaining as hell.

    • dude you started out great with Hayley Atwell as Teela but ya just went down hill from there man….and I think you mean Sam Elliot who also played Thunderbolt Ross in The Hulk…but The Rock? really man? and Armie Hammer as He-man? nah dude bout Liam Neeson as Man-At-Arms…big show dude get out of here…get the dude that played gimli in the lord of the rings…randdy couture doesnt need to be in this film…and Liam Hemsworth needs to play He-man and maybe Josh Hutcherson as Prince Adam and or maybe even Chris hemsworth as He-man…skeletor could be anyone…and the sorceress was fairly young…id say in her mid 40s…id say rene russo as the sorceress or someone like kate beckinsale even bc shes of age for the character and yet still attractive to wear the eagle outfit or if they go with the 2002 series the Egyptian look….stratos idgo as far as saying bradley cooper bc stratos was a smartass.. dude next time you make suggestions..make sure the person fits the character

  9. I would have said to leave Orko out of it. He never really resonated well with me and annoyed me more than anything. Plus, I can’t imagine he would translate well to a live action environment. Other than that, I would agree with the rest of the author’s assessment, even though I’m on the fence as to whether or not a Masters of the Universe movie is even a good idea in the first place.

    • Prince Adam and He man MUST be played by different actors of totally different ages and statures or you take away from the validity of the transformation. For it to be believable it must be done

      • It seems to work perfectly well for Superman…The level of cheesiness is the important factor here: If they get a good and appropriate actor who play up the difference in body language, using one actor for both will be accepted and great. If not, then the transformation/alter ego aspect will come across as goofy or comical.

  10. Simple script fix. Just use the writers from the 2005 cartoon. Start from the origin with Grey Skull and how the sword recieved its power. You can spin 3 movies from this. Keep the title “Masters of the Universe” but add a tag like “Masters of the Universe: Grey Skull” from there you have a franchise. I’m a novice writer, I’ll work for free on this project as long as I can get writers credit and a few other things I’ll start NOW and have at least the treatment done in 3 days.

  11. Shoot, what you need is me, i was raised on he-man and i bet i could come up with one hell of an idea for a great film that the public would love and be able to relate to….

  12. Some people may not agree with me on this, but Cringer/Battle Cat should have a speaking voice!!! Also, have Willem Dafoe as Skeletor, Peter Stormare as Hordak, Vanessa Lengies as Teela, David Keith as Man-At-Arms, and they need to finally introduce Clamp Champ!!! I think that Darius McCrary could play him!!!

    • I agree with will dofee and the cats having voices. Dennis Leary may be a good choice too. If there is going to be Cringer again I don’t remember Skeletors Panthers name but that cats gotta be in there too. I understand that the recent Filmation cartoons have made Skeletor a techie to match the 80′s movie we are discussing however it would be nice to see battle cat face down his arch enemy as He-man does his.

      • Denis Leary is an interesting choice for Skeletor, but what do you think of Peter Stormare as Hordak???

  13. Why are we rebooting? That implies that all we are doing is hitting restart. Why not leave the 80′s film alone and instead make a movie about Who he is. If you are going to keep them in Eternia, then you’ve already rewritten the movie. Go back and discover how the war got started, why He-man and She-Ra got separated, why Skeletor has such a hate of He-man and then Make a movie that is dark enough to show the battles and acceptance to have the power. Many Characters could be done CGI, however, I think the use of little people is a better plan. Go back to the comics, ask Mattel for their vision, I do think the Unknown idea is good too. Don’t recast someone as someone else you never know when they could end up face to face (I.e, The Human Torch and Captain America.

So #1. if you are going to stay in their universe stay. Eternia to Etheria
#2. No or little CGI,It’s hard to react to a tennis ball on a string, However,Do use wires and make sure that who you cast can take a fall.
#3. Origins: five W’s and H,Characters needing explanations: Sorceress,Skeletor,He-man,Evil-lyn,She-Ra(if included)
#4. If battlecat is in the movie make sure Sketelor’s Panther is in it too.
#5. Find Unknowns and mix them with other potentials. Most of the big shots have started directing.
