Movie Web nabbed a nice exclusive with actor Ray Stevenson (Punisher: War Zone) and had the extra good sense to pry a little more information out of him regarding the rumored feature film of HBO’s Rome. Talk of making a Rome movie was going strong awhile back, but since then mum has pretty much been the word on the project.
However, Ray Stevenson had good news to deliver: the Rome movie is definitely moving forward, and a script is currently in development!

If you were as much a fan of Rome as I was, you owe the cosmos a serious “Atta boy!” right about now.

Is the Rome movie still moving ahead?
Ray Stevenson: Apparently so. It is no longer a smoke and mirrors rumor. The script is in full development. As you are probably aware, this is a pretty strange process. We could go into production in a year, or it could be as quick as six months. Who knows? It will happen. At least it is no longer a rumor. From what I have heard, they are nearing the end of script development. We shall see. We shall see.
Nice. Very Nice. Personally, I’m hoping it’s the six month wait between now and the start of production; I want this film in the can before anybody can jinx it. I’ve got this thing about Rome, you see. It was taken from me before it’s time. Two seasons was never enough. My TV hasn’t been as nudity-filled since.
Speaking of nudity, near the end of the interview Movie Web brought up a really good point: HBO let Rome get away with freaking murder (and rape, and orgies, and war, and more rape and more murder and..), so, like, is all that good stuff going to fit into an MPAA “R” rating? Because I’m not trying to have my Rome watered down and served to me at movie ticket price! Sex and violence on the big screen is what I better get!
But I digress.
On the technical side, Rome is being tentatively looked at as a 2010 release. Bruno Heller, who wrote and executive produced the series, is writing the movie script as well. And, as far as is known by me, the original cast should all be back for the ride.

SWEET! Kofi, you are the man, I’ve been waiting for news about this. Kevin McKidd and Ray Stevenson on the big screen, awesome. I dare someone to tell me Vorenus is dead, lol.

Hell yea! Rome is my all time favorite show. A movie would rule. But Vorenus has to be alive. He has to!
Well, I’m fairly confident he is. Think about it. When have HBO EVER been afraid to show someone’s death on that show? When? Basically whenever someone died, they SHOWED it, they NEVER simply implied it. Yet when Vorenus “dies” they don’t actually show it, they just imply it when Pullo tells Octavian Caesar that he “didn’t make it.” Now what, did HBO all of a sudden decide to be PC and not show him gasping for his last breath? Yah right… He’s alive, I’m willing to bet on it.
great new! Rome was one of those shows that was just excellent. I really wished they would do another series, but hey, a movie is still good
So I guess we will find out if Lucius Verinus is alive, Or are they doing some kind of reboot. I’m sure it won’t be a reboot and the second season was just as good as the first so I think being that they have the same writers as the show doing the movie then it will be cool. As for the murder,rape, and orgy scenes, have you seen the new “Last House on the Left” That move has to have the most brutal rape scene done in a while, as for the violence you saw razors being dug in to skin. I think this leaves Rome open to all it usual orgy’s,murders, and rapes.
Watchmen was pretty hard core with sex, rape, blood, murder so I don’t see why this would be anything more than R.
Dude, the first ten minutes of Rome’s first season are a sex scene and then that same woman from the sex scene, still nude, dousing herself in animal blood. The first ten minutes. Watchmen HAD sex and violence. Rome IS sex and violence.
I think you mean season two’s cast, because original cast would mean Ceasar, which if they include him will be stupid

It’ll most likely continue on from the end of Season 2. The writer have said that he had the series all planned out. Things like the fall of Bruno, the fall of Cicero, Egypt, and all of those things we saw in Season 2 were supposed to be separate seasons. But since he was told Season 2 will be the last season by HBO, he rushed all of those stories into one season. That’s why Season 2 seemed so rushed, the entire Season 1 was just the fall of Caesar, yet Season 2 went through like 4 major events, lol. But he did say he had more in mind after Egypt as well, so it’ll probably go into that. Or it could be some kind of prequel thing showing what happened in detail between some of these events they rushed through in Season 2. But I hope they show the continuation. I really would like to see what happens to them after the end of Season 2…
Caesar’s mother, Atia, seems to have finally defeated her insecurities right at the end there. Throughout the entire show she was always very insecure and felt like she needed to instigate all of that drama, but in the very last episode she seemed to have this level of confidence and security that you haven’t seen except for her attempt to appear that way from the beginning of the series. So it’ll be interesting to see how her character turns out. She’s probably the most talented actress on the entire cast as well, so even though her character is a b**ch she was always fun to watch.
Then of course there’s Octavian Caesar aka Augustus, becoming the first emperor of Rome. Although they will not show his “fall” since he ruled until he died and that is like 40 years later. They won’t show that simply because Titus Pullo and Lucius Vorenus would be dead by then and the show basically shows the events of Rome as seen and affected by those two. So they are, in essence, the main characters of the show.
But who knows in what direction they will choose. Maybe Pullo and Vorenus will have to fight against forces that might be against Augustus turning the Republic into an Empire. I think those two will be on Augustus’ side mainly because they seem to be loyal to the government no matter which way it turns, especially Vorenus. But that might change because he’s basically a fugitive at the end of Season 2… so who knows, we’ll see I guess. I’m so excited, I love Rome…

I am with you that Caesar’s character line and story arc was the best (Season 1) but I do not wish them to go back to that, they did it wonderfully in Season 1 and it doesn’t need to be changed to revisited. And Season 2 and the stories that came out of it was wonderful enough for a continuation, in my opinion, so there’s no need to revisit the Caesar chapter.
This made my otherwise sh*tty week end on a high note!!!

Heller has said that it would be a continuation. He has also said that the birth of the jewish carpenter would be the main topic, hence set in Palestine. We saw Timon leave the city at the end of the series after killing his brother to return home to Palestine.
We have seen Octavian personally request Pullos help on a number of occaisions now and we know he has familiarity with the middle east in general.
Given all this I think it fair to guess that Timon may be the innkeeper who gets to tell preggo Mary that there is no room in the inn, but the stable is available. I’ll guess that Pullo will be sent on a covert mission to do martality work on a troublesome carpenter. But that’s just my guesses…..
Man, I just hope that Octavia and Agrippa are having sex like mad bunnies just to piss off Octivian. I love those two. And of course Pullo & Vorenus on the big screen together?? BRING IT ON!
Hey, Jill, I can’t disagree with you if you’re suggesting more nudity from that little petite cutey Octavia… But I’m sure that wasn’t your intention from that comment, lol.
I hope that instead of continuing with Augustus reign they go back to one of the really interesting periods earlier in the republic. Like the story of Sulla’s march on Rome, or Cincinnatus, or Valerius Corvus, or the first invasion of the Gauls, or the Caudine Forks – there are a ton of great stories there!
There is so much film material for at least 15 sequels. My God.I would like the filming of the three Jewish rebellions.
The conquest of Gaul and Germania, or Alaric ransacking Rome.
Yessss! I wish I had money and be part of the film indurstry or be connected to them.
So, any updates to this? I can’t wait to see Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo on screen again…
But I’m sad they killed off Pullo’s wife, she was such a cutey on the show, sharp and sassy in a small little package, man, can’t ask for more. Glad that fat nasty ho that killed her died…
