HBO’s ‘Rome’ Movie Still Marching Forward

Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that a movie based on HBO’s Rome series is indeed underway. We brought you word almost a year ago that a Rome movie is in the works, and now EW has some early details to share.

As reported in 2009 Bruno Heller, who wrote and executive produced the series, is writing the movie script as well; the film will be produced by Morning Light Productions.

The only question that remains is which epoch of Rome will the movie focus on and which cast members will be featured on the big screen?

According to EW:

Series stars Kevin McKidd (Lucius Vorenus) and Ray Stevenson (Titus Pullo) will likely sign onto the movie, which picks up in Germany four years after the series ended. The next step for Morning Light is to find a director and a studio, since HBO Films won’t be involved.

Interesting, that last part about HBO Films not being involved with the project. People tend to associate the name “HBO Films” with quality, so hearing that this Rome movie won’t be waving that banner might make some fans a bit leery. No worries though: if the principal cast and the original writer are all coming back, I have faith.

The only thing to do is figure out how to handle Vorenus: last we saw he was seemingly on his death bead, so hearing that Kevin McKidd will return to reprise the role is kind of funny (McKidd himself spoke on that subject recently).

For now, all is well – I am happy to hear that Rome will be returning to the screen, bigger and (hopefully) better than ever.

No word yet on a release date.

  1. Thank God!
I want this greenlit soon so that McKidd can get out of Seattle Grey A-S-A-P!

  2. Frankly, I'm not that surprised about Vorenus surviving. The way the series finale was done, it very much left the door open for him to return.

  3. besides Deadwood Rome was the best series HBO had I loved it and I am geeked about a movie just keep Lexi Alexander away from it after seeing Punisher WZ I thought for sure Ray Stevenson would never work again

    • really??!?? ray stevenson in my own opinion is an awesome actor,, i really think after the rome movie he will be alot bigger then EVER lmao, i loved rome as well but am i the only one thinking they should have made rome go to season 20!!!! 5. News from Rome! So happy to hear finally some good news. I was very worried about the non-HBO involvement, but if the writer is on board, well hell yes! Hope they choose as good a director as the one who did the series.

Ray Stevenson was great as the Punisher. Ray IS the Punisher.

    • Don’t forget that HBO is responsible for the 2 Season being so “off”. I think it is good that HBO is not involved. They mucked up the best T.V. show they ever had

  6. Don't worry about HBO not being involved. They handled Rome badly from the very beginning and now admit they made a mistake when they cancelled it just as the second season was about to film. Bruno Heller is the one who will see that all the roads leading to Rome are the right ones.

  8. I´ll love to see the series return instead of a movie, is one of my favorite shows ever¡¡ Now I am waiting for the Game of thrones¡¡

  9. This is awesome. Myself and about 7 of my friends ordered HBO just to see Rome. It was by far the best television series ever made. HBO definitely cancelled Rome prematury as it could’ve been the most watched show they ever had. The Rome movie is the type of movie we’d see in the theatres 3 times

  10. Amazing! I’d love to see This movie! I’d love it even more if after the movie, they continued with the story by bringing the series back to HBO! But vorenus better be alive!

  11. i love it so much.. so much historical… better you watch this kind of movie,, love it..

  12. I would most definately go see this movie and buy the DVD!

  13. I want Rome back, third season or a Movie, PLEASE!!!!!!!

    Greatest history HBO ever made!
